Ya, I guess the point I was trying to make is this, I will suprise me if we sign another DL during FA time, We will sign a WR in FA and that should be it, maybe a CB for deprth but no big names,

LB will come from the draft due to trading up or from DA deal, 1st & 3rd round picks, depth for the line might just be we stay put, I know hte FO like That Cliff Louis or something like that last summer, as depth.

Damn, we changed defenses and nobody told me.

I don't know what to make of Stallworth. He seems to have a lot of talent but doesn't really live up to the hype.

Great hands? They have gotten better, but are still below average.

... and IIRC, he's been a walking hamstring injury from Day 1. I'm not at all opposed to bringing him in, but I'd be wary of paying him too much. As high-powered as the Pats offense was, he played a pretty small role in it. When teams doubled-up on Moss, you'd think Stallworth would have made some real noise. Didn't really happen; which makes me wonder how good a WR he really is. We know he's fast, but what else does he bring to the table?

I don't know about this one...

Yeah, I'd prefer we just spend the extra money and go after Berrian. I think he's vastly underrated given how terrible the QB play has been in Chicago. If you put him in a lineup with Edwards and Winslow he would probably put up Houshmandzadeh type numbers.

It was reported he wanted what, a 5 year 20 million dollar deal? Doesn't seem like a lot for a guy I think will stud out on a new team.

Berrian wants a lot more than that. I think he turned down $25 million from Chicago.

Ding ding! The Pats offense had someone open on nearly ever play, and Stallworth was a non factor. He lost a starting job to Jabar Gaffney.

If we get a WR in FA, if it isn't Bryant Johnson or D.J.Hackett, I'll be kind of bummed. But that's out of the big name ones, there might be a lesser known one that will come cheap that I'm not thinking of at the moment.

I'm not that thrilled at the idea of getting a WR period out of FA.

Briggs is reported to have a scheduled visit with SF. Chicago dropped the 'tampering' charges, but those may delay a signing by a day or two, if he does in fact sign with SF.

FINS TO BREAK BANK FOR PACE?

A year after the Dolphins paid (wasted) $20 million in guaranteed money on linebacker Joey Porter, they might be getting ready to write a big check to another linebacker.

According to Alex Marvex of FOXSports.com, the Fins could be signing Cardinals linebacker Calvin Pace to "the same kind of mega-deal" that was received a year ago by Porter and by Adalius Thomas of the Patriots.

Such a move would immediately call into question Porter's future with the team. He's due to earn a base salary of $4.8 million in 2008.

It also might prompt 2006 NFL defensive player of the year Jason Taylor to blow his stack. There were rumblings a year ago that Taylor was not pleased that he didn't get an adjustment after Porter received his windfall. If the Fins do it again, that might be the last straw for Taylor.
http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm

I was not all that high on Pace, but would not be unhappy if we did get him, however for the mega-bucks he wants, and others are offering, he isn't worth it in my opinion.

It was reported awhile back that he supposedly had a deal in place with the 49er's before free agency was set to open, but who knows?

How to the niners have any cap space left, with Clements, and now Briggs?

Friday roundup: Browns to acquire Packers DT Williams

NFL.com

The 2008 free-agent signing period is under way, and the NFL Network's Adam Schefter is burning up the phone lines. Follow all of Friday's free-agent action right here. Check back frequently for updates.
Browns to deal for Packers DT Williams

NFL Network's Adam Schefter is reporting that the Cleveland Browns will trade their 2008 second-round pick to Green Bay for defensive tackle Corey Williams. Cleveland then will agree to a deal with Williams that pays him $18 million in guaranteed money and $23 million in the first three years of the deal.

Williams had been tagged last week as Green Bay's franchise player. He played in all 16 games, including nine starts, in 2007 and set career highs with 51 tackles and 32 solo stops. He tied his career high with seven sacks.
Jets acquite Panthers DT Jenkins

The Jets traded third- and fifth-round draft choices to Carolina for defensive tackle Kris Jenkins. The Jets then signed Jenkins to a five-year, $35 million contract that includes $20 million in guaranteed money. -- Adam Schefter
Bucs sign Faine

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made Jeff Faine the highest-paid center in the game, accoring to Schefter, signing the former Saint to a six-year, $37.5 million deal, including $15 million in guaranteed money. The deal will pay Faine $20 million in the first three years. -- Adam Schefter

Falcons re-sign Redman

The Atlanta Falcons re-signed quarterback Chris Redman to a two-year, $5 million contract that includes another $3 million in escalators. Redman could wind up being the Falcons opening-day starting quarterback. -- Adam Schefter
Skins keep Collins

The Washington Redskins resigned quarterback Todd Collins to a three-year, $9 million contract that included a $3 million signing bonus. The 36-year-old veteran backup replaced an injured Jason Campbell in Washington's Week 14 win over Chicago, then started the last three games of the regular season, helping the Redskins earn a wild-card berth. With Campbell coming back from a knee injury, it was considered important for new head coach Jim Zorn to retain the veteran backup. -- Adam Schefter
Raiders keep DT Kelly

The Oakland Raiders resigned defensive lineman Tommy Kelly on Thursday to a seven-year contract that reportedly could be worth more than $50 million.

Kelly, coming off reconstructive knee surgery, was set to become an unrestricted free agent on Friday. But the Raiders pre-empted that with a lucrative contract that guarantees Kelly more than $18 million.

Keeping Kelly was an offseason priority for Oakland after defensive tackle Warren Sapp retired. Kelly was the team's most consistent defensive lineman last season before sustaining the season-ending knee injury Oct. 28 against Tennessee. Kelly finished last season with 27 solo tackles, one sack and a blocked kick that helped seal Oakland's first win of the season. He has 13 sacks in four seasons in the NFL. -- The Associated Press

I like Stallworth, but prefer Bryant Johnson over any of the other FA's WR available.

I do expect the Browns to sign a WR and move JJ to the slot.

Thanks Clay, I needed that reminder after all the DA bashing I'm doing in other threads. It's a good problem to have I suppose.

Bingo! My thoughts exactly. Johnson is on my wish list as well. Not sure if Savage is going to bring in another WR, but if there's one out there that I want it's him. Berrian has too high of a price tag and this kid has game.

Meh, I've watched Berrian a lot here. He's got a lot of holes in his game. Most of the fans here didn't like him that much. Heck, the Bears knew using the franchise tag on him was a total waste.....which is why he's an URFA. And that's saying a lot since the Bears have nothing at WR right now. Most thought they would be forced into slapping the franchise tag since they cut Mush two weeks ago. Who else do they have? Bradely? Hester (the guy that can't remember or run a route)?

Former Bengal Williams agrees to sign with Vikings for $33 million

By John Clayton
ESPN.com
(Archive)

Updated: February 29, 2008, 12:14 PM ET

An all-night negotiations session with the Minnesota Vikings produced a deal that has made Madieu Williams a formal Bengal and now one of the highest-paid safeties in the NFL.

Williams, 26, agreed to a six-year, $33 million contract Friday morning after his agent, Ken Zuckerman, and Minnesota officials worked through the night to get a deal done. As both sides spelled out the final language of the contract, Williams headed to the airport Friday morning for a flight to Minneapolis to sign the deal.

The contract tops Deon Grant's five-year, $31.8 million deal that was the highest of the free agent safety class of 2007. Williams was considered one of the top safeties in free agency this year.

Though his contract isn't as rich as the ones given Bob Sanders of the Colts or Troy Polamalu of the Steelers, it was fair and his presence fills a big need in the Vikings secondary.

Williams is known more for his coverage skills than his hitting, and the Vikings wanted to shore up some of their pass-coverage deficiencies.

Senior writer John Clayton covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

And yet another FA signs:

After getting ring with Giants, Mitchell opts for deal with Bills

ESPN.com news services

Updated: February 29, 2008, 12:14 PM ET

Linebacker Kawika Mitchell took a chance in free agency last winter and ended up with a Super Bowl ring as a member of the New York Giants.

On Friday, Mitchell chased the money, and landed a multi-year contract with the Buffalo Bills. Terms of the deal weren't immediately available.

The Bills are aggressively trying to improve their defense. Mitchell's signing helps their linebacking corps, and the Bills have Jaguars defensive tackle Marcus Stroud in their building Friday for a visit.

Stroud was told Thursday by the Jaguars that they might trade him.

-- John Clayton, ESPN.com

BUCCANEERS SPEND SOME DOUGH ON FAINE
Armed with $44 million in salary cap room, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers spent very little time spending some of their rare bounty, reaching an early Friday morning contract agreement with unrestricted free agent center Jeff Faine, who played with the New Orleans Saints the past two years.

Contract details were not immediately available, but league sources said the deal will make Faine one of the NFL's highest paid centers and surpass the six-year, $36 million contract that another former New Orleans center LeCharles Bentley, signed with Cleveland as a free agent in 2006.

The move upgrades the interior of the Tampa Bay offensive line, where Faine will replace 10-year veteran John Wade as the starter. The Bucs have worked hard to build the line unit in recent years, principally through the draft, and Faine will be flanked on the interior by a pair of young, ascendant guards in Davin Joseph and Arron Sears.

Considered a future Pro Bowl player by Bucs coaches, Joseph was a first-round choice in the 2006 draft and Sears was selected in the second round in 2007.

Faine, 26, has started in all 66 of his appearances in five NFL seasons. Over the last four years, he averaged 14.3 starts and started in 30 games in two years with the Saints. He was acquired by New Orleans from Cleveland in a 2006 trade on draft weekend after playing with the Browns the first three seasons of his career.

I'd love to get Johnson in here. Watching him, he's a solid WR. He just had 2 great guys overshadowing him.

Maybe, but Briggs is no Cato June. He's a thick, rugged linebacker who is a decent blitzer. The Browns scheme isn't 100% based on rushing the passer non stop from the outside, like maybe what the Cowboys do.

Rams K Jeff Wilkins will retire from football.

We wouldn't want to play for the Rams either. Wilkins was an All-Pro in 2003, but his year-to-year inconsistency rivaled Bret Saberhagen's. He finishes his 14-year career with 1,416 points, good for 19th all time.

See the way I look at is the OLB in a 3-4 are mainly there to rush the passer and contain and the ILBs are there to be tackling machines..

At WOLB in the 4-3 (someone correct me if I am wrong) That is the the linebacker who is suppose to make the most/a lot of tackles.

Honestly he could play either..but I figure we will draft a Shawne Crable Type to be our OLB and if we sign Briggs make him one of ILBs

It depends on what kind of 3-4 is run. The Browns run (at least under Grantham) a scheme that wasn't super heavy on pressure. The Sam in that defense has to be a cover and rush guy, with the main pressure coming from the weakside.

If the Browns were like the Chargers or Cowboys, Briggs would for sure be an ILB becaue that it's a pure zone cover/inside run stuff position.

My point is Briggs is from a system T2 WLB like Cato June. He's very versatile, and frankly the Bears only tapped a portion of his potential.

This Travis LaBoy's peeked my interest as a pretty good OLB prospect... according to some sites he ran a 4.7 40 his draft year which is plenty fast enough for a 3-4 OLB... Been at the top for the Titans for QB pressures the past couple years... Pair Peek, McGinest and him up and we've got a decent rotation of opposite of Wimbley. Seems like he could be another Shaun Smith type signing...

Thought I would list our current FA's that, to my knowledge, remain unsigned (not surprisingly, since it has only been 14 hours). Rather it gives us a list to follow as they visit or sign elsewhere. Anyone ohave any info on visits or potential suitors, or anyone on the list that you would like resigned?

Chaun Thompson ILB
Simon Fraser DE
Marvin Philip OC
Seth McKinney OG
Ricardo Colough CB
Bobby Hamilton DE
Ethan Kelley DE
Matt Stewart OLB
Tim Carter WR
Ted Washington NT

Think that is all of them.

BENGALS BAG ROGERS by Michael David Smith

Michael Smith of ESPN.com is reporting that the Detroit Lions have traded defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to the Cincinnati Bengals.

No word is out yet on what the Lions got for Rogers, who had been on the trade block for several weeks and had been rumored to be heading to the Jaguars, Jets and Broncos, among other teams.

For the Bengals, acquiring Rogers gives them just the kind of big defensive tackle head coach Marvin Lewis has always employed in his defense. The 340-pound Rogers is in the mold of Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa, the huge defensive tackles who played for the Super Bowl-winning Ravens team on which Lewis served as defensive coordinator.
