A deal for whom? Us signing Anderson, or Dunn receiving a contract offer from another team?

FUN WITH WIKIPEDIA
A reader has pointed out to us a curious quote at the bottom of the Wikipedia entry of Browns quarterback Derek Anderson:
"It is rumored that he has signed a $47 million contract with the Carolina Panthers, with $17 million guranteed [sic]. Browns would receive a 1st and 3rd pick in the 2008 draft. Panthers pick 13th."
It's probably a load of crap, but it's intriguing nevertheless.
And even if it's accurate that Anderson will sign with the Panthers, the Browns would have seven days to match the offer sheet. It's highly unlikely, however, that they would.
[Update: The Anderson Wikipedia page is now officially a mess.]

Linkie: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3270160Browns don't seal deal before Anderson hits market Associated Press Updated: February 29, 2008, 4:02 AM ET Comment Email Print The Cleveland Browns are poised to launch Plan B at quarterback. B, for Brady, that is. The club was unable to sign starter Derek Anderson to a three-year, $20 million contract - $10 million guaranteed - before Friday's 12:01 a.m. free agency deadline and are prepared to turn their high-powered offense over to Brady Quinn, a first-round pick from last year and fan favorite. On Thursday, Browns general manager Phil Savage protected the club by tendering Anderson a one-year contract offer for $2.5 million in 2008. Anderson did not accept the deal, making him a restricted free agent and on the market. Teams can now negotiate with the 24-year-old Anderson, who went from backup to Pro Bowler in 2007. If Anderson accepts an offer, Savage said it would "make it extremely difficult" for the Browns to match it. The club would have seven says to do so. Because of the high tender, if the Browns decide to let Anderson go, they'll receive first- and third-round picks as compensation in April's NFL draft. Before the deadline, Savage said Anderson and his agents must have felt there was interest in him to risk turning down the Browns' offer. "If he's willing to take the walk out there, there's got to be some indication there's something at the end of the rainbow," said Savage, who reiterated his preference would be to keep Anderson and Quinn. "If Derek wants to be a Brown and really wants to stay here in Cleveland and play with the players that are on our team, then he can do that rather easily. "We can look in the mirror and know we put a strong offer out there. We're in a good situation either way." The Browns don't have a first-round pick in 2008 because they traded it to select Quinn, the former Notre Dame star who sat behind Anderson all season. Quinn didn't play until the season finale, but showed nice touch and poise when he was in. Savage is confident Quinn is ready to be a No. 1 starter. "There's a comfort level that Brady can walk in, administrate the offense and do even more than that," Savage said. "He does have some mobility, is physically strong and has a good arm. The mental part is going to end up being his greatest strength." Before the deadline, Savage said if Anderson declines the club's multiyear offer and opts to test the free-agent market, it's unlikely he'll be back. The Browns can continue negotiating a long-term deal with Anderson during free agency. If Anderson leaves, the Browns would be in the market for an experienced backup, Savage said. Messages seeking comment from Anderson's agent, Mark Humenik, were not returned. Aside from Anderson, the Browns, who went 10-6 last season and narrowly missed the playoffs, have other pressing needs in free agency. Savage said the club will try to bolster its defensive line and linebacking corps. According to several reports, the Browns were working on a trade with Green Bay for defensive tackle Corey Williams. Williams, who tied a career-high with seven sacks last season, was designated as the Packers' franchise player last week. Savage hopes to have free agents visit Cleveland in the next few days, but he didn't anticipate any quick signings. Last year, the Browns signed free agent guard Eric Steinbach on Day 1 of free agency.

j/c web page Browns: Anderson is free to test waters; talks continueFriday, February 29, 2008 3:11 AM By James Walker THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH BEREA, Ohio -- Quarterback Derek Anderson became a restricted free agent at midnight, but that doesn't mean he won't sign a contract extension with the Cleveland Browns. A source told The Dispatch yesterday that the Browns have increased their offer to $12 million in guaranteed money. Earlier this week, they offered Anderson a three-year, $20 million deal with $10 million guaranteed. Another source said a deal possibly could be reached if the Browns increased the total value to $24 million. Such a deal would be half of what Houston signed quarterback Matt Schaub for last year (six years, $48 million), meaning Anderson's representation would avoid accepting a deal that's below market value and the Browns would keep the term to three years. The value of Cleveland's latest offer is in the range of $21 million to $23 million. During a news conference yesterday, Browns general manager Phil Savage said he is still willing to negotiate. "If it's close, we're always willing to tweak something to get it done," Savage said. "Over the course of three years, you're not talking about a ton of money one way or the other." Because Anderson remained unsigned, the Browns provided themselves the highest protection by giving him a one-year tender worth $2,562,000. The tender will require other NFL teams to give up a first- and third-round draft pick to sign Anderson. Savage said he would not accept a deal for anything less. It's believed that Ander-son will not attract much interest at so steep a cost. The fact that Anderson has yet to sign means it's possible another team could be willing. Teams in need of quarterbacks include the Baltimore Ravens, Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons. "If he's willing to take the walk out there, there's got to be some indication there's something at the end of the rainbow," Savage said. "We have a pretty good, strong package out there with the opportunity to play with a good group of players and a good coach (in Romeo Crennel)." Defensive needs The Browns are expected to focus on the defensive front seven during the first days of free agency. They are looking for at least one defensive lineman and possibly two linebackers to upgrade a defense ranked 30th last season in total yards allowed. The Browns released defensive end Orpheus Roye on Wednesday and will not re-sign nose tackle Ted Washington or end Simon Fraser. That leaves Robaire Smith and Shaun Smith as the only linemen with playing experience. jwalker@dispatch.com

Shark, to piggy back on that BROWNS INCREASE OFFER TO ANDERSON So much for the Cleveland Browns taking money off the table once quarterback Derek Anderson forced the team to use a restricted free agency tender on him. James Walker of the Columbus Dispatch reports that the Browns have upped the offer to Anderson, pushing the guaranteed money on a three-year deal from $10 million to $12 million and the total take from $20 million to a number between $21 million and $23 million. Our guess is that the Browns are trying hard to create the appearance that they did all that they could to keep Anderson in the event that he goes elsewhere and: (1) plays as well or better in his new city than he did last year in Cleveland; and (2) Brady Quinn doesn't. And we're getting a stronger sense that the Browns are ready for Anderson to move on. If the Browns thought enough of Quinn to give up the fourth pick in the second round of the 2007 draft and their first-rounder in 2008 to get him, why wouldn't they want him to start? The fact that the Browns were willing to part with a one and a two might shed some light on whether the Browns believe that Anderson will be given an offer by another team. If a totally unproven Quinn is worth a first-round and a high second-round pick, surely a guy like Anderson is worth a first-rounder and a third-rounder. Linky
you had a good run Hank.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson wasn't a free agent for long.
Anderson has agreed to a multiyear contract to stay with the Browns, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been completed.
General manager Phil Savage believed if Anderson had gotten an offer from another team, the Browns probably wouldn't have been able to keep him.
The team had been negotiating a three-year, $20 million deal for Anderson.
The 24-year-old signed with Cleveland just hours after he became a restricted free agent.

And the last 12 hours were going so well.......why? Why do we need to sign him to an extension? Ugh, this team just took a huge step backwards in my opinion.
I bet nobody called DA's agent so they took the Browns offer (or someone did call but was barely interested).

Well, we had 3 options for how it would go down...2 good, 1 bad
1. The DA signs an offer with another team and we get great draft compensation
2. The DA signs longterm with us at a reasonable price and we have 2 above average QB's on our roster. We can slowly groom Quinn while competing with DA. If DA falters, we can trade him (albeit for less) next offseason.
3. The DA signs a 1 year tender and is gone after this year with no compenstation. This would not be good. Thankfully, doesn't look like it is happening.

I would imagine people who didn't want him to be our starter and wanted the picks would be upset. That's not that hard to understand.

Yes, because we all know what kind of starting QB he is. Inconsistant, failed in the clutch and is now pushing Quinn further down the bench.

Or the Browns leaked news of an imminent deal in order to force any team interested in DA to pounce quickly and make a higher offer?
I doubt that's true, but the article did say the deal wasn't finished yet, so until its signed anything can happen.
That said, I am happy either with keeping DA or getting picks.

He has been a RFA for all of 10 hours. Do you really think that was enough time to decide there were no better offers? Also, Savage has reportedly raised the offer to 12 mil guaranteed. If there was no intrest do you really think he would have done this?

I guess DA's agent didn't have the patience to wait out what happend to Volek and Green and the rest of the BUMS .... Good move by DA ... he'd have been a MORON not to take it ... and he got some extra gauranteed and total for being patient ... My guess is he got no interest .. if he did there is no doubt he would have had to take a look ... thats a no brainer ... We were basically negotiationg against ourselves in that it was the 3 year deal or risk losing him for nuttin like the Chargers did Brees 2 years ago .. now we have TOTAL CONTROL over where he goes and we will get sumptin in return after BQ buries him .. and BTW .. witchever one does end up getting traded .. THERE LOSING VALUE NOW ... but thats OK ... IT IS WHAT IT IS and that was still the best option for us seeing as how we weren't going to get ENOUGH for him now and he could have left next year for nuttin .. now we can all settle in and wait till the THE MASSACRE BEGINS ...

We aren't trading him. If he signed our offer, it was to stay with us for at least this next year. There's NO WAY the Browns will sign and trade DA. Phil will look like a freaking jerk by stabbing a player in the back.

Why not....it may be easier for the other team if we signed him first...what if it was DA's idea?
I mean I am not saying it will happen but it could..I mean 4 things could happen 1) DA starts 2) Quinn starts 3) We trade DA 4) We trade Quinn

Quinn is our number 2. He will get snaps plenty of snaps in preseason and training camp to show his stuff. QBs go down, may be he'll get his chance to go in and light it up. No matter what, Brady's going to get his shot at some point.
And DA's only 24-25, it isn't like he doesn't have upside. We've got two quality starting QBs on our roster, now we have even more time to make our decision.
This is a good thing in my book, as nice as draft picks might be, nobody prob was willing to drop the 1st and 3rd for DA. So we got two QBs now.
