Just saw this on rotoworld
Citing "sources," the Washington Post reports the Browns will acquire franchise player Corey Williams from the Packers at midnight tonight.
Green Bay wants for a second-round pick in exchange for Williams. If this report proves true, Packers GM Ted Thompson will look brilliant. By franchising Williams and putting him on the block, Thompson will have nabbed a day one pick for a player he originally appeared all but certain to lose. I don't see Savage giving up picks unless he's getting a few for DA.

I know that GB had a great defensive line...and if we're giving up a 2nd rounder for him, we better be darn sure about this guy.
I'd love to hear what some on here think.
you had a good run Hank.

I do not really want to bring up DA on this thread, but things seem to falling into place. Somebody out there must want DA, or I do not think Opie would give up the second. I am praying on this one

If Savage is willing to pull this off then I think he KNOWS that he will be discussing draft picks in a trade with Anderson's new team or taking the 1st and 3rd.
It's going to be interesting. I really doubt Savage would do this without knowing he has two or more picks coming in.

Well, if we're gonna take a DT with our second rounder, we might as well just trade it for a proven stud who we know is going to work. Low risk move if Phil pulls the trigger.

Corey Williams is really good, whats the concern with giving up a second round pick for a proven player instead of drafting a young player that might bust?

That's the way i was thinking, why not go after a proven DT and take away the chance nothing is available when we choose.

Yeah, especially when it's late pick in the round. Then chances of us finding a player as good as WIlliams at the bottom of the second round are very low.

Exactly. The end result is the same....except you have a proven track record as to what he can do in the NFL. Plus, there's no guarantee a DT is going to be there that's worth the 2nd round pick (you can't reach for need).
I'd be ok with this.

Yeah, the D-Tackle position for 3-4 bodies is going to be extremely picked-over by the time #56 comes around. He's got the size to play in the 3-4, so I'm down with taking a starter at a position of need for a second-rounder we were going to reach for.
And he's only 24. Sounds great to me.

I know some have mentioned this recently, but to me, making a move like this would really show that the foundation has been built. It sounds like we really feel we are in this for the "here and now," as we well should be.
I heart winning

Better question is...
He was franchised, do we have a chance to resign him?

I'm sure the trade would be dependant on us signing him long term.

You don't agree to trade for a player without working out a contract extension with him.
Here's the kicker: Because he's under the Franchise Tag, the Packers can give his agent permission to speak to other teams about a trade, therefore bypassing any bogus tampering rules.
As far as trading a 2nd round pick for him..........C'mon people, SHEESH! He's a young guy who's got a ton of years remaining in the league. I sometimes wonder if we're using our heads or not........

Gotta admit that it's awfully fishy and funny that a Redskins article is speaking of the Packers trading a player to the Browns

How does the WASHINGTON Post have this information? Is this a Green Bay paper, or a D.C. paper? Doesn't make sense to me

I hope so...
From what is coming from the Packer fans, I'm guessing this guy was the last to get a starters contract out of their basically 5 starters. They say he is a heck of a player though.

He'll turn 28 when preseason starts.
A 2nd round pick for a NT who's going to start for 4 years is a sound trade. Remember, he's not been a full-time starter, so he's got plenty of tread left on his tires.

Wow... guess I was wrong if it's true...
I never said that it couldn't happen... I just know how Savage loves the draft so didn't expect him to make a trade with picks... of course if he is willing to do it then I have to trust that we are going to get a guy who can really help our defense.

I'm not sure that he would be signed as a NT. To me, he is more of a DE than a NT.

Wow....looked at WIlliams stats....he had 7 sacks at DT. That is pretty incredible.
EDIT: Check that....it's even better. 7 sacks in 2006 and 2007......14 sacks from a NT?

I wonder if Savage still goes after Justin Smith? Or Randy Starks?
If we happen to sign Calvin Pace, this will be a great start to tomorrow.

I don't want to get ahead of ourselves but if Savage lands Williams and a DE our defense probably changes dramatically overnight.

1) Randy Starks would be a nice move!!!
2) Why is Green Bay willing to trade their best DT?

Go Phil It's your Birthday!
I was hoping we would get a shot at him in FA but I'll gladly trade a 2nd round pick for someone who has probably 5-6 years and is proven.
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.

You don't see a menage tois in football. That's like a basketball trade with a 3 way.
