I really hope we sign Briggs

I think Briggs would work really well as an ILB in a 3-4.

A guy that athletically gifted and that "football smart" can work in a 3-4...nuts to anyone who says he can't!

I'd also like to take a look at Clark Haggans. He's older, but he can still lay the wood. Another OLB to ILB possiblity?

Briggs would be nice, and showing him the monster defensive line he gets to play behind now could help make him ours. It's gotta be a lot more appealing to have Smith, Rogers, and Williams keeping lineman off you than just having the d-line blown back into your face like what would have happened under our old line.

Love Phil's aggressiveness...

Plus the guy's got to have some sort of silver tongue to make some of the deals that he does.

If this trade is true and we are giving up Bodden, i wonder with this years draft being deep at CB if maybe Phil will trade future picks to get a CB in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Btw........did anyone else catch this? I read somewhere on here where it was the league that nullified the Bengal/Lion trade. Can that be true? If so, did they stop the trade because of Rogers' character problems and all the problems Bengal players have had recently?

I was thinking those exact thoughts and at my Bengal-fan buddy who is convinced that the off-the-field Bengal crap was blown out of proportion.

Do you think Pool could play the slot CB position? Nickle...dime

Pool would be better in a man system covering a TE. He is pretty big, has some strength, and can run. He doesn't play the ball well and can't run w/his head turned to the QB, but it would be better than putting him in charge of our deep middle.

He was such a high draft choice that cutting ties w/him would be hard. I understand their reluctance to do so. He might not be gone this year, but this guy won't stick unless he suddenly develops instincts, because he is killing us.

I've heard that it was either the language in the contract was messed up, or that it violated salary cap rules, and that is why the league rejected the tarde for the Bengals.

I would hope that is not the case.Sounds rather punitive to me.Iwould hate to have the league office deciding what players qualify to go what teams.

That's why speculation is dangerous. Apparently, I was wrong.

It was the language of the deal. *L*

Supposedly Rogers is due a roster bonus at midnight tonight and Detroit wants to trade him before the deadline, they thought they had a trade worked out with Cincy for their 3rd and 5th round picks. And speculation is that Detroit submitted their paperwork for the trade but Cincy did not cause Mike Brown wanted to wait till tomorrow that way Detroit had to pay the roster bonus.

Does anyone else find it odd that Bodden was included in the deal?

I don't really have a problem with it...but I sure did not see that coming?

Player for player trades in the NFL are odd enough and I thought the coaches liked Bodden...very strange to me.

Comparing Shaun Rogers to Big Penny is laughable

Rogers has been to 2 pro bowls and has been WAY more consistant than Warren. Warren...I don't even know if he is in the NFL.

Look, if Rogers is motivated, he is the best, THE BEST, DT/NT in the NFL.

The fact is Rogers isn't motivated and he IS lazy. I'll agree, if he plays to his ability he would be the best DT/NT in the NFL.

But the same could be said about Warren. He was extremely talented. But he was lazy.

We are trading a valuable pick, and a good, young corner for Gerrard Warren 2.0

And did anyone stop to think that Rogers turns 29 in 2 weeks...and Bodden turns 27 after the season starts? Rogers is not a long term answer.

At least Bodden gave it his all every down of every play.

Phil your are a GENIUS!!!!

Corey Williams and Shaun Rodgers!!! This is unreal. Suddenly our D-line is a strength and has some serious depth! I was pumped about Williams but Rodgers is an absolute freak athletically. I'm estatic. Wright will step up just fine and replace Bodden, and I like McDonald we just need to draft another corner for depth.

Only question do we go Robaire Rodgers Williams
or
Rodgers Smith Williams
I think Rodgers is athletic enough to play end.

Here is the problem

Rogers HAS DONE IT OVER A FULL SEASON, and not even once but twice! Warren never did it through a full season.

He is more like Randy Moss, plays bad when his team is bad but if motivated can be an All-Pro.

I just heard a reporter say it that had been to the press conference. I still don't see the link either.

The link to Phil's press conference is in the "Sights and Sounds" at the top of our page here.

This is a transcript I typed on the Williams trade from that video...

"The Cory Williams situation, with the trade for him, when you make a trade for a player that's been franchised it takes a while to get through all the paperwork and all. So, he basically is just finishing up signing that contract and we're finalizing some of the paperwork with the Packer on that, so you're going to meet him tomorrow morning, I think it's at 10[am]. And Romeo will be down with him as well.

Just a little bit of a background on Cory, he's a 6th round pick out of Arkansas State, he went to Green Bay and worked his way into their rotation, recorded 7 sacks each of the last two years, and he was a player who we felt like if he did get to free agency we would be interested in trying to obtain. Obviously they tagged him a week ago and we felt like that if we really had sincere interest in him would we be willing to give up something to maybe get him. So, obviously once the league year began last night we contacted the Packers and said "Hey, would you be willing, if we were going to do a long-term deal, would you be willing to do something for less than what the tender is?" Which was two number ones.

We talked about it for awhile back and forth and ultimately came to the conclusion that it was worth a second round pick for us to get a defensive lineman that has played in the league, had success in the league. And, quite honestly when we met on the draft two weeks ago and forecasted what would be available in that 53 to 56 range, I was not comfortable at all that we were going to find a defensive lineman in that realm of the draft. Other position players, yes. Defensive linemen, no.

With that being said we felt like that Cory was one of the main pieces of the puzzle, he and a couple other players, we felt like we had to get one of them. So we were willing to do that. We gave up the second round pick and he's a Brown.

So we're excited about that. I think he'll be a real valuable addition to us not only because of his rush ability on the inside, but also his ability to play the run. He's 6'-4", 313 so he fits the dimensions of the 3-4 and he's a real good guy. We think he'll fit in well with our team and give us some legitimacy on the defensive front."

I was dead wrong on this one...lol. When it first came out that Rogers would be trade bate, I figured they would be lucky to get a 5th for him considering his on and off the field issues.........accompanied by coming off an injury. However, I guess if this is what the market dictates then I'm ok with it. Mainly, because Bodden is an oft injured CB who hasn't live up the 4 year extension we gave him...........he can't stay on the field. The 3rd hurts, but as someone else mentioned your not going to get a talent like Rogers in the 3rd round. Oh and Rogers is ready on day 1 not 2 or 3 years from day 1.

What a difference a day makes!

We went from having a garbage DL just over 24 hours ago, to now having a very solid looking DL.

We definitely have upgraded the DL, where I had big concerns. I wasn't too concerned with the secondary, and now I have some questions and concerns.

More like "ifs."

"If" Brandon McDonald plays well like he looked the second half of the year, I'll feel better.

"If" we can handle it with 2 second year corners and Holly, this will greatly improve the D.

"If" we sign Drayton Florence, I won't be worrying so much.

If these big lineman let our RBs run free and create pressure, it will take off the pressure on our corners. But I'll feel better if we brought in a corner, preferably Florence.

Cheese & Rice Savage...................................WOW........

Corey Williams DE
Shaun Rogers NT/Shaun Smith NT
Robaire Smith DE

Hagans is coming to town for a visit...Taking a look at Kamika Mitchell's deal...5 years and 17.5M...Hagans isn't gonna be very costly...We ink Hagans and there's that EXP Leader...Adios MGinest...

Vers...Don't worry about the Cap $$$...Some of this is being offset by the release of Roye and the trading of Bodden...We'd also save with the release of MGinest and possibly Andra Davis...I ain't worried about the Cap at all...

Two things...

1) Screw the draft picks when you're getting THAT kinda READY MADE talent...These are TOP TIER Players for 2nd and 3rd round picks...We're looking at the Northcutt's/Morgan's/Pool's of the world...

2) Bodden...At some point in time aka Courtney Brown...U gotta make the decision to cut your losses...I have absolutely zero problem with this...A Corner will be looked at here quickly...NO WAY we go into the season LIGHT at Corner as we are now...No biggie...We'll find one...

Right now we've got TWO options active for OLB...Haggans and LaBoy...One of em's gonna sign...

Here's the thing...Stallworth is still in town as reported...When that happens that said player usually DOES NOT LEAVE...I'd like to see Bryant Johnson in here but apparently we aren't interested in going that route...At least we aren't goin' gaga over Rubber Hands Berrian...

We're goin' for the LESS $$$ #2...Who in THIS offense is actually option #3 with Winslow here...Stallworth was involved in a WR core that Included Moss/Welker and Gaffney...New England's gonna be SORRY if they let both Moss & Stallworth fly...Stallworth won't be asked to be the STAR of this core...Chandler's impact on him will be interesting at 27 years old...

So...We've got LaBoy and Haggans coming in for visits...Neither are gonna be blockbusters...We haven't even STARTED FA yet...lol...Savage is definately showing me AGGRESSION...I LIKE that...And we all thought the FA market for the Front 7 dried up...lmao...

I'm betting Stallworth gets inked TODAY...

I'm betting either of Haggans or LaBoy get inked by Monday...

Here's the one to watch closely...

LANCE BRIGGS...Chicago...

I don't care what anyone says about Briggs and the 3-4 defense...This dude is a MONSTER...MANY LB's that have THAT talent can play ANYWHERE...THIS is the type of enforcer we need in the middle of this defense...

Briggs came out rumored to be looking for 10M a year (Samuel's $$$)...It's being said his cost has come down to 7 or 8M...

U want a defensive turnaround???...Screw the draft...

Corey Williams DE
Shaun Rogers NT
Haggans OLB
Briggs ILB

At first I thought giving up Bodden and a third was a steep price to pay, but the more I think about this deal, the more brilliant it's sounding. With the way McDonald and Eazy-E came on during the second half of last year and the ability Holly's shown as a nickel back, it makes me think that our secondary will only be better next year even after losing Bodden. On top of that, Bodden was a constant injury waiting to happen. Now that we've got a couple of defensive linemen with the ability to dominate. as well as Shaun Smith who was our only lineman that really looked promising last year, we can finally see DQ and Wimbley, as well as Leon Williams, flying around freely and making plays. The improved pass rush will obviously make life easier on our secondary as well. I do think that we could add another ILB for the purposes of depth and shore up the FS position (although I did think the play of our young safeties got better in the second half of last year). However, I love the approach Savage took of not having to rely on the draft to get his guys. He targeted players we needed, and he went out and got them, just like last year. I must say, at the end of the day I couldn't be happier with the position we're in.

Rogers reminds me of "Big Money", tons of talent but an underachiever and well...Lazy! I Really hope that RAC can get this guy motivated. I don't like the idea of giving away all of our draft picks, and I am a LB fan. Just hope this thing for us. JMHO Go Brownies!!!

I like the deal.

We got a player for the Dline for a 3rd rounder and a player who evidently wasn't going to factor in to our secondary this season.

Great move.

You're not so wrong as confused. You saw conflicting reports, one of which wrongly said we spent our 3rd on Williams.

MichelleDawg quoted your question and pointed out to you that we spent the 2nd on Williams according to the press conference.

I then posted a reply to you, quoting your question, and in my reply I quoted an article from the main Cleveland Browns site stating that we spent a #2 on Williams.

MrDNA quoted your question and MichelleDawg''s reply that we gave up a 2nd according to the press conference and he asked her for a link.

MichelleDawg then quoted MrDNA's question asking for a link and pointed out to MrDNA to check out my post, (which had the answer and the source)

Vers then quoted you, and quoted MrDNA's reply to you and also quoted MichelleDawg's reply to him and pointed out to MrDNA to check out my post as well. ( Keep in mind, this is all Vers did or said to anyone in this whole thing )

MrDNA then tells MichelleDawg he assumed "press conference" meant there was a link to it and he couldn't find it.

Then MichelleDawg told MrDNA that no, she heard a reporter state the information and that she hadn't seen a link to the press conference either.

It was just starting to get funny at this point.

Then...

You replied to Vers, (who by the way never said anything to you) and said to him in a very sarcastic and obviously peeved manner, "yes i can read....i read 2 articles from reliable sources that contradict each other...ya dig?"

Then Vers, understandably for him, (and laughably for me), says he doesn't know what you're talking about. He didn't really!

Listen, and I'm sorry, but it keeps getting funnier.

You then respond to Vers, who, remember, never said anything to you at all except that he didn't know what you were talking about. You said to him, in a very upset tone, "oh so sorry mr football god....no need to condecend....i forgot your the foremost authority on all that is reading comprehension", and posting a picture of a "Massive Truck of Fail", which really, for me, put the whole thing over the top with the absolute funniest bit yet.

It ain't done folks.

Then Draftdayz tried to make some peace.

Then I post the entire transcript of Savages speech from the press conference regarding Williams and the fact we gave up our 2nd pick for him.

Draftdayz, who, like me, can't get the comedy skit out of his mind, and he tries to figure it out. He also tries one more time to make peace and begs you to take back your Massive Truck of Fail, which incidently, makes me audibly laugh everytime I think about it as I sit here, the only one awake in my house at 5am.

Your final response to the whole thing is..

"meh...not everyone can be good at the tubes i guess...

if im in the wrong, then i'll apologize.

it a good pic anyway... "

You weren't wrong Bro, you were just confused and mistaken like we all get on here sometimes. And as an added bonus you're right, it's a good pic anyway!

I think the Browns are trying to patch the team through FA this year.

And some years that is the way to go.

Based on our position in the draft, and possibly because Savage thinks this years crop is weak based on that position, he feels this is the best way to improve the team.

A 3rd rounder wasn't going to help the club this year as much as rogers will....at least probably wasn't.

I also have a feeling the issue at qb isn't totally settled and wouldn't be surprised to see some picks return to us over the next several hours/days/weeks.

LOL....he probably isn't going anywhere.

It just seems strange for savage to not have any picks......but as I said somewhere else, maybe it is simply a matter of our position and the draft class. Maybe in his estimation drafted players really isn't the way to go this year to make immediate impact to the team.

Round 4 is where he can draft a guard or something to develop.
