Ya know, maybe, just maybe... if he was a little taller, and maybe a little faster, and maybe ran better routes, he might have caught a few more passes. There's a reason why Moss and Welker did so well. Think about it....

Welker did well because of all the attention given to Moss and Stallworth.
If Moss ain't in New England next year, watch Welker's numbers drop like a lead balloon.

Oh, this is awesome. I am really pumped. His numbers weren't huge last year but I agree with other posters that when you have moss and welker do what they did last season, Stallworths numbers are going to take a hit somewhat. I love the signing. Every free agency period since Phil came along has been huge for us. I love ya Phil.
How in the world can you fix something... If you don't know how it's supposed to work?

That's like saying Edwards did well because of the attention to Joe and KII I would have to think all the heat would be on Moss. Stallworth should have gotten better numbers than he did given the situation. Bad move....

dude give it up already. if he doesn't produce, we're hardly paying him anything (10 mil guaratnteed reported over 7 years). if he comes here and does absolutely nothing, we're hardly any worse off. i don't see why you're so adamant about being a pessimist on this guy already. also, 45 catches for 700 yards is nothing to sneeze at for a free agent signing. on top of that, your analogies are just silly.

Your stance on this move is completely idiotic .

I'll trust Phil on this one.

Thought this was interesting..... "In Cleveland, he'll play alongside his close friend, Braylon Edwards." http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/article.php?id=8256Didn't realize Braylon and Donte were good friends.

I don't see why you guys are giving him so much grief for having an opinion and repeating it. # pages of posts where everyone is all giddy, and some of you feel the need to attack someone who disagrees?
Stallworth is not a great reciever. Never was and never will be. He is a big upgrade over Carter, but I don't think he is above average as a number 2.
Now you guys tell me I'm so wrong and I have no right thinking this way.
BTW, NE was a pass happy offense with a QB who loved to use many recievers. I think the arguement that his numbers weren't better because of Moss cuts both ways. Moss was the one getting most of the attention by the defenses. That should have given Stallworth a lot more touches.
I am happy with the pickup because he is an upgrade, and at least has a chance to stretch the field. I don't think he will catch much more then 30 passes. Then again, I don't think he needs to.

According to a source, Donte' Stallworth, who played last season with the New England Patriots, agreed to terms on a seven-year, $35 million contract with the Browns, $ 10 million of which are guaranteed.
Although I thought that there were better options out there...the numbers of his contract are not that bad...$25 mil spread over 7 years. I just hope tht Wes can polish his skills.

I agree that he has the ability to be an average #2. That's what we'll be paying him to do, and that is exactly what we needed. All I'm saying is, he's not a bum, and he's proven to be a pretty decent deep option.

Especially with the contract given to Bernard Berrian.
IMO Stallworth is better than Berrian.

All I know is this.... 8 catches, 117 yards and 1TD. That's what Tim Carter gave us. For those saying Stallworth won't put up fairly large numbers, I think many will be pleasantly surprised. If he can stay healthy (and that may be a big if), I honestly could see him going for 800+ yards and 7-8 TD's. Remember, Anderson LOVES to throw the deep ball and Stallworth is a burner. Braylon and Kellen will always be 1 and 1A in terms of defensive scheme and that will probably allow Stallworth to work 1-on-1 with a safety. Yes, Stallworth played with Brady but honestly.....if you ever watched New England a few times you'd notice that Brady was ALWAYS looking for either Moss or Welker. Unless Stallworth blew by his guy, he was really just being used to stretch the field. I think he'll be a much more integral part of our offense and thus, put up bigger numbers then he did in NE.

Amen.
Watch how he played in Philly to get a better gauge of his capabilities where he was the man. He clearly won't be the man here but he'll play a much bigger role than he did in NE.
Besides, if it makes Edwards, Winslow and Jurevicius better, it'll have been worth it.

The way I look at it... if BE puts up 1200 or so... KW2 will be around 1k... if Stallworth gets up around 700 or higher again then we'll be sitting pretty nice

That thought also crossed my mind....However , Phil is Not Butch and he will find a way to get things worked out....Go Browns ! ....
phil has done good. however, I can't not be afraid that we are being built to win "now" and not long term. just a thought.
I do like how active the browns have been, I just stepping back a little.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

Yeah, the thing with Stallworth is that he requires something Carter never did.....attention.
I think he'll put up good numbers but even aside from that, he's going to make it easier on our other two studs (which is obviously a good thing).
Defenses will actually have to account for him or he is a guy who is certainly capable of going off for 100+ yards and a few TD's. That absolutely was not the case with Carter....heck, if he caught one pass for 10 yards that was considered a success.
It will finally give us a chance to spread defenses thin and get both Braylon and Kellen in more one on one match-ups. Everyone benefits from adding a guy like Donte.

Being a number two wide reciever is totally irrelevent. That is just where you line up. Welker and Watson were always on the field and both of them are GREAT players. What you are saying is that since Joe J is our number two he should be putting up better numbers than Winslow even though Winslow is better. Your spot as a WR does not matter if you are on the field at the same time.
. FORTY SIX CATCHES FOR 697 YARDS WOW.... REALLY MAKES ME EXCITED.
He's taking Tim Carter's spot.
And what were Carter's stats?????
That's a huge upgrade. Is there a problem with that?
Yeah, didn't think so.

I don't think you have anything to fear. We didn't have a first round pick. These guys are just what the doctor ordered and are not over the hill by any means.
We have a team that NEEDS to win now. We were real close last year and I believe that these moves could put us over the hump right now. We'll worry about their eventual replacements (as well as Jamal Lewis') in the years to come. We've got time for that now. (ahem, and now, we don't NEED to trade DA - although we still may)

Had to stop reading the thread. Between the crap that Stallworth sucked because he didn't put up big numbers as the # 2 in NE and the crap that DA won't be able to connect w/Stallworth, despite throwing for almost 3800 yds. and scoring near record amount of points, I just had to stop reading.
Damn guys........can you just try and keep it real? Enough w/this biased BS.
To the signing:
Stallworth will help us. I would rather have had Bruce, but Stallworth is a decent WR. He has good speed and big play ability. His greatest attribute is running after the catch. He is pretty strong. He's fast. And he has some elusiveness.
On the other hand.......he is a tad inconsistent and he is not a good route runner. Bad route runners often make QBs look bad. As in......."where the hell was he throwing it to?" When actually, it is the WR to blame.
I actually thought Stallworth had a good year in NE last year. His numbers weren't great, but he played w/a lot of talent and he made quite a few big plays for NE.
Bottom line: He will help the Brown's offense.

I agree if you would all stop & get off your ET tonite box and think for a minute...he came from NE ( C Dillon/ R Moss) and all the bad boys went
WE HAVE A NEW ATTITUDE IN THIS LOCKER ROOM..He knows what its about...you all look at STATS....it's the PLAN man WHAT was our offense in '06.....IN '07....IN '08 think of the possibilities JJ outside / DS in the slot +'g pattrerns...DS out side ..JJ inside & KW2 playing in both of those ...just think the D won't know if DS is cutting across or deep ..JJ is cutting in (more likely) or doing a 15 yd out..plus KW & BE on left Heiden /DS & JJ on right I agree DA needs to improve .....but it could be our offense needed to improve in the last 4 games....course 20passes (not 48 ) in 35MPH winds would have helped in 1 game...... JUST THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX....this ain't our fathers BROWNS

*potential* cap hell in 2 years when BE and KW2 start the real demands....and even now KW2 is griping. i have no doubts that phil will be able to handle it, as he's been pretty good at managing the cap. but i hear what your sayin...

And this illustrates the whole story right here:
As Toad pointed out earlier today, Stallworth won't be the 2nd receiver here. KWII obviously is, and that's exactly why Stallworth is going to effective for us. Creating matchup problems all over the place, showing potential to go deep, freeing up Winslow, freeing up Lewis, freeing up Edwards, freeing up JJ, doing 3rd receiver duty, but also acting as a legitimate 2nd receiver when the situation calls for it.
Really, it's almost like we have TWO 2nd receivers now, all depending on the play.
Add Cribbs to this mix and teams are going to have nightmares preparing for us in 2008 -- not as a direct result of Stallworth's talent level, but as a result of what he represents when he steps on the field -- a substantial increase in play options.
I'm sure Chud is dreaming about those options right now! He's probably drew up 15 plays before he hits the sack tonight!
**Insert clever signature here attributed to some historical figure that sounds interesting but has been taken completely out of context.

I think he has probably messed himself.
Derek has no excuse but to hit his targets. Imagine that, from league minimum to this.

This signing was a no-brainer. Teams took away our deep ball in the second half of last year. Good luck doing that now.

With the owner's discontent for the CBA, it could be that Phil is preparing for uncapped season.

They've got to look at it from all angles......those who are prepared will be able to ride the waves a lot better than those that act as if it's not a possibility. I hope they get this thing ironed out, it worries me a great deal.

I am open to the Stallworth signing. My only question is how does the signing of Anderson, Lewis, Williams, Rogers, and Stallworth affect the long term plans of the Browns?
If we keep this up aren't we going to be in cap purgatory? Especially with Edwards and KW2 new contracts looming.
Don't get me wrong, I love the big splash we have made in the last couple days. But what are the repercussions? Is the FO wagering the future for winning now?
Trip McCraken is hired to make sure that dont happen.

j/c I like the signing. I read where Joe J. is contemplating retiring. web page So this is a really good sign from on Phils' behalf IMO Seems like he is loading up on proven veteran talent much like the Pats have.

Haaaaaaaaaa...Very good...Very good...
This one's backloaded...PERFECT...
Far from perfect IMO... This ain't John Stallworth,,... it's Donte.... for all he's done, and for a helluva lot less money, we might as well kept Northcutt. Seems like a waste of money to me. ( I'd be more inclined to get in his court if he was just a few inches taller.) He's allmost a clone to Northcutt.
Northcutt didnt help the Jags in the playoffs and I think he is making about $8.5million a year.
I'll take the cheaper WR over the high priced punt returner.

I dont think we will be seeing Mcginnest making plays after one more year. It would be nice to see him come off the books next year.
