http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3274467Steelers reward Roethlisberger with 8-year, $102M deal By Michael Smith ESPN.com (Archive) The Pittsburgh Steelers and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger have agreed to a new eight-year, $102 million contract, according to sources. The contract, which includes more than $36 million in guarantees and is easily the largest in team history, places Big Ben among the game's highest-paid players. In comparison, Peyton Manning received a $34.5 million signing bonus in his big deal and Michael Vick received $37 million in guarantees from the Falcons in his mega deal. Roethlisberger's agents, Ryan and Bruce Tollner of REP 1 Sports, traveled to Pittsburgh and finalized the deal with the Steelers late last night. The team is expected to announce the move Monday in a press conference. Roethlisberger, who turned 26 on Sunday, is coming off a Pro Bowl season in which he completed more than 65 percent of his passes with a tean-record 32 touchdowns and an efficiency rating of 104.1, leading the Steelers to an AFC North title and the playoffs for the third time in his four seasons. Roethlisberger, who two years ago became the youngest quarterback ever to win a Super Bowl, grew as a team leader last season and bounced back from a disappointing 2006 where his offseason was marred by a serious motorcycle accident. In addition to a pay raise, the Steelers are also in the process of adding another weapon to Roethlisberger's arsenal. Pittsburgh hosted former Vikings running back Mewelde Moore on Sunday and his signing appears imminent. Moore will provide Pittsburgh's offense with the legitimate receiving threat out of the backfield it had lacked. He's also likely to serve as the team's primary kickoff and punt returner. Michael Smith is a senior writer for ESPN.com.

As long as he has to spend some of that money on butt pads because of our revamped D, I'm cool with it.

Nice.
I'd have paid Faneca. But that's just me . . .

I am sorry, but I don't think Big Ben is a 100Mill type of QB. I think they grosly overpaid for a game manager.

lol! Only if he also had been traded to the Bengals.
I have to say, we've been improving against the Steelers. Big Ben has hurt us these past few years, but with goofy things like rushing and getting away from clear sacks when the guy doesn't want to get a roughing call.
If our D has improved in reality as much as it has on paper, I think we'll be able to get after him and Parker.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

They could have given Faneca the moon and the stars and he would have left. He made up his mind last year to do so........

I hope they keep him... I'm happy!! I don't really see him as a HUGE threat like a Manning or Brady. He takes too many sacks, and that is a PLUS for us!!! especially with our new d-line!! The guy just doesn't know how to get rid of the ball.. maybe its a MAC thing (Frye, Roth, Leftwich, Pennington). No one is boosting up MAC QB's now, like they were a few years ago.

Yeah, the time to pay Faneca was last year when he wanted to stay but they were unwilling to talk. Got to give Rooney credit for being consistent, though this big payday for Ben is somewhat surprising.

Well, it's a good move for the Steelers.
I think everyone who says Roethlisberger is overrated is delusional, personally. If you forget how important Roethlisberger is, think of the nosedive the O takes when Maddox and Batch play.
The guy threw for 32 TD's while running for his life behind an awful OL last year.
Calling him a "system QB" because he only threw less than 20 times a game his rookie season is ludicrous. And even then, how he ran that O his rookie year was SPECTACULAR.
I hate his guts cuz he's not only a Steeler but a Miami Redhawk as well, but I have to give him props.

Thank you Ammo...Ben had a big year in Arians spread out offense, and I think it suits him well. He's getting paid not for what he's done, but what he's going to do.

I understand that this isn't how it actually works, but 8 years, 102Mil works out to be 12.75 mill per year.. Is that really out of line for a QB that gets you to the Superbowl and wins and gets you into the playoffs in all but one of his years so far?

That being said...what we've done the past couple days has made a strength out of what is Ben's biggest weakness: pressure up the middle.
Ben does well vs. pressure off the edge cuz he can roll out, but up the middle exposes his biggest weakness. Hopefully we get results this year.

Wow... nice to see a kid from Ohio cash in like that. I kinda figured he'd come back to haunt us when the Stillers drafted him. Hopefully, we'll finally get the better of him in 2008.

I want to see him get his money's worth of sacks and misery. Maybe a Turkey Jones sack alike contest heheheheh. That is a rather obscene amount of money. I hope the redone no-Grantham pressure package we are building brings him much misery on the field.

That's what I thought also. Wasn't he upset that Russ Grimm didn't get the head coaching position?
On a side note directed at the rest of the thread, Ben Roethlisberger doesn't deserve that kind of money, but, the Steelers won't find a qb as good as him anytime soon, so I can see why they gave him that sort of deal.

Huh?? Ben single handedly won multiple games last year. Maybe too much but he deserves it....behind the 31st best line in the league to boot. I realize you probably don't like him but give the man some credit.

I think it's a good deal for both sides. Just because he's a Steeler doesn't mean he's not very very good.
If I'm a Steelers fan the only thing I'd worry about is paying all of this money to a QB who is not adequately protected. Smith at LT is good and that's very important, but a day will come most 35+ sack seasons where a hit is awkward or a lineman crashing through the middle gets a hit on a knee low.
I'd want some money and attention on the OL if I'm rooting for that team. And I'd worry every time I watched a game about BR leaving the game injured.

One other thing that I have yet to see anyone mention, and that is the number of years on not only this contract with Ben for the Steelers, but the one we signed with Stallworth as well.
I used to stay up (very much so) on the CBA and contracts and all that jazz.....I still do to an extent, but not as much as I once did.
Isn't it true that any current contract agreed to right now between a player and a team can only have the contract's signing bonus money pro-rated over 5 years? How does this effect Ben's contract? How does it effect Stallworth's contract? When is the other SB money prorated........is it only spread over the first 5 years of the contract?

I couldn't believe how much they paid for him! But overall I agree with you...
he's a good QB... I'm not ready to say great yet, but he's a darn good QB who overall will not lose the game for you and has the ability to win it when it's on the line.
Good move for the steelers getting him for a long term... that's a ton of money though... but it's nice to see them give him his payday.

Interesting to note... only D. McNabb has started in a superbowl after signing a $100 million dollar contract.

You are giving Smith way too much credit. He kinda sucks at left tackle. Better suited on the right side. Personally, I would love to see them draft Chis Williams, OLT Vanderbilt. Not the best run blocker but can hold his own against speed rushers.

I'm sure someone knows better than me.
I do know there was/is the Deion Sanders rule about frontloading a contract with a SB and that may have led to a 5yr prorate rule.

Yep,..and towards the end of the season the line got even worse and his wear really started to show. He's going into this year with arguably the worse line he's ever played behind. New contract, terrible line,....I'm expecting Big Ben to be more of a Big Bum in 08'. At least he'll be getting the last laugh,....all the way to the bank!

Wow!!! His agents took Pittsburgh to the cleaners! There aint no way in hell he is worth that chunk of loot. Oh well let them over-pay and not be able to focus that money else where. I'm not complaining.
Haha, $102 million for a guy who two years ago led the league in interceptions and has never had eye popping numbers.
