FOXSports.com has learned that legendary quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire. In fact, it's believed he informed the Packers of his decision within the last few days, although it's unclear when Favre and the team will make his decision known. Neither GM Ted Thompson nor head coach Mike McCarthy returned several calls left by FOXSports.com for confirmation. After flirting with retirement for the last few years, Favre will finally go out on the heels of one of the best seasons of his career. He led the Packers to the NFC Championship Game after passing for a stunning 4,155 yards, looking very much at times like a younger version of himself. In addition he threw 28 TDs — including an overtime Hail Mary pass to beat Denver in front of a national audience — and had a 95.7 quarterback rating. He was also voted into the Pro Bowl following the 2007 season but declined to go. Favre leaves the game as the all-time record holder in several categories including wins, passing yards, touchdowns and consecutive games started. A three-time MVP, The southern swashbuckler won fans over with his carefree style that epitomized the "gunslinger" moniker and made fans out of everyone from the guy next door to those already enshrined in Canton. If in fact, Favre does not have a change of heart, his final pass of a Hall of Fame Career was an interception by the Giants' Corey Webster, setting up New York's overtime win in the NFC title game. For the last few years, the question of whether or not Favre was going to retire has been the most debated topic during the off-season. Two years ago he let his decision linger as reports both that he was returning and that he was retiring emerged. In fact, at one point he was supposedly going to announce his retirement at his charity golf tournament. Of course, those reports ultimately proved to be false. Then after his final game of the 2006 season, a tearing and emotional Favre appeared on national TV and seemed to be bidding the game adieu. But once again, he had a change of heart and came back for what proved to be one heck of a final hurrah. This time, Favre has made his decision and will likely make it publicly known soon. However, like in the past, Favre could wake up any day now and decide to change his mind, although that doesn't seem likely at this point. The team will now shift to Aaron Rodgers, a former first-round pick, who has had few opportunities to play since being selected with the 24th overall pick in the 2005 draft. But when Favre was injured in a Thursday night game against Dallas this past season, Rodgers looked pretty good in relief. The former Cal star completed 18 of 26 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown — the first of his career — and nearly rallied the Packers to the win.

I love Brett Favre. There, I said it.  He's really the only player I have ever cheered for that hasn't worn a Browns jersey and he'll always be one of my favorite football players. Congrats on a great career Brett! You deserve a rest..........if you're actually going through with it.

Here we go again.  I do like and respect Favre as a player. I just hope this doesn't become the wishy washy back and forth, start a press conference to say nothing, deal this has been in the past. I enjoyed watching him over the years and wish him the best!

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that according to Favre's agent, Buss Cook, Favre informed Packers coach Mike McCarthy of his decision Monday night.
Foxsports.com first reported Favre's decision.
A sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famer, Favre, acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons, led the Packers back to the NFL's elite. He retires with 5,377 carrer completions in 8,758 attempts for 61,655 yards, 442 touchdowns and 288 interceptions.
Cook said as of Tuesday morning, there were no plans for Favre to hold a news conference.
Favre, who returned for the 2007 season when many thought he should have left the game, had a career renaissance in his final season and led the Packers to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants in overtime.
Mortensen reported that Favre, who wanted the Packers to obtain Randy Moss when he was a free agent last season, had once again pushed for Moss to join the Packers. Favre had spoken to Moss late last week and was willing to commit to more than just this season if Moss and the Packers could come to an agreement. But the Packers did not pursue Moss, who re-signed with the Patriots on Monday.

Wow... I figured he'd come back for one more season considering how close the Packers came to the SB in 2007. Huh. Well, assuming he doesn't change his mind (again), I'll miss the guy. I always enjoyed watching him play the game. Congrats Brett! See you at your HOF induction ceremony.

I hate to say this but it looks to me like he just came back to break the records. If it was about winning he would have come back for another year. The team is much better than they were a couple of years ago when I thought he was really going to retire.

I heard he was irked that the Pack didn't go after Moss hard enough. So he retired the day after Moss stayed with the Pats.
Lame.
Maybe its just me, I'm sick of this prima donna. Will he retire? Will he come back? I need more time to decide....blah blah blah. People stroke this guy as if he's the best QB ever. He's had one Super Bowl and numerous flame outs in the postseason. I'm glad his last pass will be a postseason overtime interception.

Then again, maybe he just finally stopped at looked at the bigger picture. He lost his father a few years ago, could have lost his wife recently...Maybe he just decided it was time to spend time with his loved ones while he still can.
He had that winning season and the feeling afterwards was no different then when they had a losing season recently. Maybe that "magic" of winning, just wasn't there when it was over, and he's had enough. Who really knows.
Good luck too him, he has been fun to watch.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Brett Favre, the first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer whose retirement was announced Tuesday, wasn't even the most well-known quarterback on the field at Cleveland Stadium -- let alone the entire NFL -- on Oct. 18, 1992.
In fact, he wasn't even No. 2.
Because of an injury to Bernie Kosar, Mike Tomczak started for the Browns that day against the Green Bay Packers. Everybody in Northeast Ohio -- and all over the state, for that matter -- knew who he was after he had started at Ohio State three straight seasons in the early 1980s, leading the Buckeyes to a Big Ten championship in '84.
Then there was Ty Detmer. Even though he was a rookie third-stringer for the Packers, he had won the Heisman Trophy the year before while at Brigham Young.
Favre? He was a relative nobody. Sure, he had been a second-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in the 1991 NFL Draft and then was traded to Green Bay the following year for a first-round choice.
But high draft picks often fizzle and are never heard from again. Plus teams make trades all the time.
So Favre's career to that point had not drawn any attention outside of Green Bay and Atlanta.
That day against the Browns over 15 years ago, he was making just his third career start -- all in a row. Nobody thought that streak of consecutive starts would still be intact at the end of the 2007 season.
The Packers, under first-year head coach Mike Holmgren, and Browns were both 2-3 as they entered that game at Cleveland. The hosts had started the season with a 14-3 loss at Indianapolis and then fell 27-23 at home to the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football. It was discovered after that game that Kosar had fractured his ankle. He would be lost for over two months.
Without their leader, the Browns defeated the Los Angeles Raiders 28-16 behind four TDs from Eric Metcalf, lost to the Denver Broncos 12-0 and then topped the Steelers 17-9.
Just like the Packers, they were looking to get back to the .500 mark and get on a roll.
The Browns led 3-0 at halftime on a 26-yard field goal by Matt Stover in the first quarter. The Packers got deep into Cleveland territory three times in the half -- to the 26, 27 and 29 -- but came away empty.
The Packers tied it 3-3 on a Chris Jacke field goal midway through the third quarter, but the Browns took the lead for good three minutes later on a four-yard Kevin Mack TD run to make it 10-3. The Browns went onto win, 17-6.
Favre finished 20-of-33 passing for 223 yards and no interceptions.
"They're going to let you move the ball up and down the field, but they're not going to let you score," Favre told the Chicago Tribune after the game. "They're very good.
Favre once and was sacked twice - the most memorable of which came on a first and goal from the nine-yard line early in the fourth quarter. Favre missed a wide open Sterling Sharpe in the end zone and was sacked for a three yard loss.
"We kind of kicked ourselves in the foot right there on the goal line with a couple of mistakes. So it was a little bit of what they were doing and some of what we were doing."
''That was unfortunate and that was kind of a young mistake,'' addedHolmgren after the game. ''It seems like a broken record, but we're not mature enough as a team yet to overcome the mistakes we had. We're young in certain areas and that's the difference. We're going to play a lot of close games, but if we make those errors they're not so close. We can't make those errors. Not yet.''
The Browns hovered right around .500 for most of the rest of the year. They were 7-6 and in the AFC wild-card playoff hunt but lost their final three games to finish 7-9.
The Packers won six in a row at one point en route to going 9-7, their best finish since 1989.
Beginning in 1993, the Packers began a string of six consecutive playoff appearances and got to back-to-back Super Bowls, gaining a title following the 1996 season when they beat New England 35-21. Favre, of course, was the catalyst for the Packers' success during that period and throughout his long career. But his star power had not yet been lit when he looked rather ordinary against the Browns.

Agreed.....However, are the Packers ready to go with Rodgers or might a QB be in their near future ?....I am Not saying that we will be pushing any transaction , but IF the Packers come calling for Anderson , IMHO we would have to consider it.....I mean IF I'm correct we would be responsible for paying his guaranteed $ & the Packers only his salary this season ?  ....

I'm kind of with you. He's a great quarterback and all, but I think the media just worships this guy. And a lot of the things Brett does seem to be really selfish, or just something to garnder more attention.

Personally, I think the Pack will definitely move forward with Rodgers. He's been in the system for a while and, based on how he looked against Dallas, he seems very comfortable with it. He was efficient and made good decisions with the ball. Going into the off-season program as the presumptive starter will also help him.
Green Bay will obviously miss Favre's playmaking ability. However, oddly enough, they may gain a more consistent QB with Rodgers at the helm. Time will tell.

It depends on what the guaranteed money is. We'd be responsible for any signing bonus, but the portions (if any) of that guaranteed money that are roster bonuses, salary, work-out bonuses, etc. would be the responsibility of whoever he's with when those monies were due.
Not all the guaranteed money escalates into this year's cap. Just the portions that is the signing bonus.
It was reported in some thread here that none of the guaranteed cash is payable until after the draft. If so, this contract doesn't make DA less tradable. It could make him more tradable, actually. Last week any interested team would have to negotiate a 6 or 7 year deal with the guy. Now he's under contract for 3 years.

Rodgers looked in control of the offense during the short time he was under center this past season. They are perfectly content to go into the year with him as the starter.
Now, three years later, I finally get to see whether or not my statements that Rodgers was a better prospect than Alex Smith were correct...........

I can't see him retiring after knowing the last pass of his career was thrown for an INT. The longer he sits at home the more this will bother him.

For a fanbase that prides themselves in tradition I find some of the comments here a bit less than appreciative. The guy did it on the field. He was a guy that any fan of any team should have said "damn I wish he could have been a (whatever team is yours)" He embodied "playing the game the way it was meant to be played". Don't misunderstand me. I am not saying he was bad, but he was nowhere near as good as the media and fans made him out to be. Talk about a guy who made horrific decisions not just in his first few years......but throughout his career.

In my opinion, he's a very good QB that just happened to never get hurt (which helped him set all those passing records). He had a four great years in which he won one Super Bowl. He lived by the pass and died by it too (in many cases costing him team a postseason game). He's one of the greats of our generation for sure but not anywhere near the Mount Rushmore of all-time QB's. This may be over the top but I think of Favre as "Dan Marino with a ring".
