http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3277837Browns' recently acquired defensive tackle gets 6-year deal The Cleveland Browns moved quickly to acquire former Detroit Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers after a trade with the Bengals was nixed, and moved just as fast in securing him to a long-term contract. Rogers and the Browns agreed to a six-year, $42 million deal on Wednesday, a restructuring that will keep him in Cleveland until 2013. With his existing contract scheduled to expire in 2010, three years and a guaranteed $20 million were added to make the deal work. Under terms of the new contract, Rogers will make $23 million over the first three years. The Browns acquired Rogers on Saturday in exchange for a third-round draft choice and cornerback Leigh Bodden. When the league nixed a proposed trade that would have sent Rogers to Cincinnati for third- and fourth-round draft picks, the Lions quickly recovered and moved him to the Browns, who had just traded for Packers defensive tackle Corey Williams. The deal for Rogers completes a $113 million flurry of contracts negotiated by his agent, Kennard McGuire. Before the start of free agency last week, McGuire worked to have wide receiver Andre Davis re-sign with the Texans for four years and $16 million, $8 million of which is guaranteed. On Tuesday, McGuire negotiated Javon Walker's $55 million, six-year agreement ($16 million guaranteed) with the Raiders. Senior writer John Clayton covers the NFL for ESPN.com. (Figured this needed a new thread as it is new news and the other one is 8 pages long) ~Lyuokdea

BROWNS GIVE ROGERS A BIG RAISE Less than a week after sending a third-round pick and cornerback Leigh Bodden to Detroit for defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, the Cleveland Browns have made an enormous financial commitment to the veteran lineman. According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Rogers will receive a six-year, $42 million deal with more than $20 million in guaranteed money. The move makes Rogers the highest-paid interior defensive lineman in the league, besting the record of $18 million in guarantees set six days ago by Raiders defensive tackle Tommy "Ba Boom Ba Boom Ba Boom" Kelly. http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm

Well, in Phil I trust. He obviously has a lot of faith in him. Does anyone know where our cap space is at now? And for next season?

Awesome. I have no doubt that RAC and Tucker can get the most out of this guy. Now let's re-sign Braylon and Kellen to extensions. We are a playoff contender every year now. Any team can win it!

Savage and RAC must really feel this guy is going to perform.
Let's hope he does for many years, and we get that defensive pride back that we once had.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Even though those numbers are pretty big, I would bet that his cost over the next 3 years is now less than what it was when we first acquired him (which was like $17.5M).
Giving the big money over 6 years was probably the only way to get him to agree to re-do the deal to lower the hit.

this is great.. I believe that his talent when not motivated is good enough to maintain a starting position in Detroit... but NOW w/ RAC he will definitely be motivated... IMHO this is going to be an offseason that will be looked at as a new way of dealing with a teams weaknesses.. I believe that other teams will look at us and say why not trade draft picks for proven guys..

Well, according to the article, that's not exactly correct.

I'm no CAP guru like some of you guys are.. don't pretend to be, but what's clear as a bell to me is that the Browns are betting that this kid is gonna be part of the "BIG FIX" to our Dline problems. Much like they must have felt Stienbach would be the "Big FIX" to our Oline problems last year.
They were right then, so I gotta give them the benefit and think they know what they are doing now. But man, that's a WHOLE LOTTA MONEY! Whew

With 3 years left on his contract, this might be setting a precedent. Now, you'd think, Winslow (has already griped) and, possibly, Edwards would have beefs about getting their deals redone.

Ahh, I didn't see that part of the article (obviously).
We must really believe the guy to be the real deal for us then.

Cleveland Browns defensive line reaches $100 million Posted by Tony Grossi, Plain Dealer reporter March 05, 2008 12:10PM The Browns not only have one of the biggest defensive lines, it has swiftly become one of the most expensive. NFL.com and ESPN.com are reporting the Browns have made Shaun Rogers the highest-paid interior lineman in the league. The Browns ripped up the contract they inherited from Detroit and gave Rogers a new six-year deal for $42 million. About $20 million is guaranteed in the new contract, the reports said. Rogers was scheduled to make about $19.5 million over the next three years. The new contract ups that figure to $23 million. Rogers cost the Browns starting cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round draft choice in a trade made official on Tuesday. Previously, the Browns traded their second-round pick to Green Bay for defensive lineman Corey Williams. They then signed Williams to a six-year deal for $38 million. According to salary information reported by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Williams will receive about $23.35 million in salaries and bonuses over the next three years. Last year the Browns signed two defensive linemen in free agency to more modest figures. Robaire Smith signed for $12 million over four years and Shaun Smith for $8.65 million over four years. Add them all up and the Browns have committed potentially over $100 million to their top four defensive linemen. You would think that should buy them an improvement over their 27th-ranked run defense and 30th-ranked defense overall. grossi So yeah, anybody got those cap figures I requested? Geeeez, with the potential new contracts for K2 and BE, I really hope Phil and Trip MyCrackin know what they're doing.

I've gotta assume that Phil knows a little about contract situations.
It's obvious, though, that he's a believer in the old adage that games are won in the trenches. How much do we have now invested in our DL and OL?
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

That's what I'm thinking Purp..,, Faith in this kid must be high as can be..
I guess when you look at it, he's got the size and has some proven ability given he's been to two Probowls... so there is clearly something there to hang your hat on..
But like I said,, heck of a chance they are taking..
The more I look at the moves that Savage has made this year, the more I think he's going for all the marbles right NOW!
When you think about it, Savage is the GM of a team that was maybe one or two run stuffers away from the team going 12-4 last year, winning the division and getting into the playoffs..
And once you make the playoffs, anything can happen.... look at the Giants!

If our new d-line performs like our new o-line did last year, we are a super bowl contender right now. The pressure up front will let our backers roam free and take the heat off our young secondary.

I don't care about a finger to the Steelers,,I just want that finger to have a ring. I don't know whats going to happen but I am damn excited for the future. The marketing mgr at my job is a huge Steelers fan and even he is excited for us. He is amazed at what has happened the past few years and honestly I think he wants to root for us. All I have heard nationally is how were back! Are all the stars lined up for Cleveland finally? I have been on Dt and this site since 2001 and the whole time all we have been saying is we need the grunts in the trenches. The closest we got was getting Tucker in FA and drafting Faine. Then the great Courtney Brown/Gerard Warren debacle. Now finally we have guys that get it!
Our honor defend, we will fight to the end, for OHIO! GO BUCKS!

No, signing talented players does that, and you do have to spend for them.

Just thought of something..I could be wrong but since we have no picks on the first day or a third rounder..that rookie pool money is being spent on these guys....or can they do that?

I don't see why not, but then again, I really don't know... I wanna know what's gonna happen to Ethan Kelley...I liked him, I know he had microfracture, and he's a FA, but there's been no word about him, and when Phil listed his mock depth chart for DL, Ethan wasn't mentioned...I guess that answers my question in a way though.

I think this spending is fine. I have a feeling that a long talk happened before the contract was offered about offseason programs, staying and reporting in shape, and that Rogers must have said all the right things. Folks we have to remember that the salary cap goes up every year. The salaries of good players will go up every year. So compared to 5 years ago this amount of money was insane. In todays footlball world it's the cost of doing business. Somone compared us/this spending to the raiders. I would have to disagree. We are signing good players to good contracts. The raiders are apperently using a dartboard and and oujii board. I mean 50 million for a subpar player coming off knee surgury? Or if we signed that tackle Woody for howevery much he got? Now that would be worth complaining about. Giving very good player very good money , one who has griped about not being payed and played like he thought he didnt' get paid on a bad team? When he was a 2 time all pro? When he's healthy and we want him happy and committed? I think Phil knows what he's doing and I am happy about it!

He better know what he's doing, because that's a HUGE amount of jack to give to a 29-year old defensive tackle with questionable work ethic.

Whoa! I sure hope they're right about this guy. I understand the potential he represents, but that seems like a LOT of money to pony up for a guy who's work ethic has come under scrutiny more than once.

I havenot followed him much, I do know that the guy can be a beast....Every bit as good as Casey Hampton when he wants to be. Like some of you already said, it's a lot of money to a guy with some ??'s
On top of the fact that we have a few other extentions that are coming up.

Yeah I'm not real high on this move either. I don't mind taking the risk on Rogers, because after the franchise tags were laid out the FA class was a joke and we were desperate. However, I just don't understand the logic in giving a guy with this many ???s that big of a contract. Why not just let him play under his existing contract, and if he produced then worry about resigning him if need be.
This is a big gamble imo..........much bigger gamble than Savage & Co. have ever done in FA/contracts before imo. I hope they are right.
Against logic, the most effective armor is willful ignorance.

Does anyone else see Phil as a riverboat gambler on a hot streak. Throws money and picks at OL, pays off big time. Throws money and picks now at DL....
I hope that man stays on a roll.
Personally I don't like throwing big money at new faces. I like drafting ProBowl talent then rewarding years of performance.
But we don't have that luxury I guess. I hope this works! Closes Eyes!

This might have been the only way we were going to get Rogers. We had to agree to writing up a new deal.
Oh well, I hope its structured well enough so we can dump this guy if he performs at a low level in 2-3 years.

It probably is. It's really unlikely tha he finises all 6 years of the deal, much like anybody signed to a huge, long deal like this. The best I can justify it is that we are REALLY trying to make a push for a title these next 3-4 years.

The stiff arm was hilarious! We should use him on a few goal line situations. Jamal Lewis running up the gut with Rogers and Vickers as the FB's.....YIKES!
