Does anyone else ever get incredibly annoyed, when youre getting ready for bed and youre exhausted, and you think oh man i cant wait to hit the pillow and fall immediately asleep im so tired,

only to lay down and wake right back up. and feel like youre hours away from sleep.

so you get up to do something, get tired again, and have the same thing happen.

UGH...i know its prolly just the Sunday night insomnia from being up late all weekend and sleeping in way late. But i hate this

this stuff works like a charm: http://www.tylenol.com/product_detail.jhtml?id=tylenol/pain/prod_ss.inc&prod=subpss

basically, it has the same ingredient that tylonol nighttime has that knocks you out, but without all the medicine. It works great. I take a couple everynight unless I'm already super tired or I've had a lot to drink.

Happens to me a lot, especially on Sundays. I keep a bottle of Unisom sleep gels next to my bed, which work great. Take about 45 minutes to kick in, but once they do youy should get a good rest. As long as I get 5-6 hours minimum with them, I'm alright the next morning.

Try melatonin.

http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/DVH/HerbsWho/0,3923,4060%7CMelatonin,00.html

You can buy it in any supplement store.

It works well for me, but with anything like that, you might not want to use it on a regular basis.

The link is so you can read up on it and see if it is something you might want to try.

Unfortunately, I've become a bit reliant on sleep pills - Walgreen's generic Sleep II. Need a couple about every night to fall asleep. I think about too much when I lay down to fall asleep. Bad habit - and I want to kick it....

Exhausted...Lay down to sleep ....Nope--Wake Up and Think !....Got Ya ! ....I know how you feel !....All I can say as advice is reduce your caffeine before bed and let things go ....Everything will be the same in the morning so let it rest and maybe you will be able to rest too ! ....

Happened to me last Sunday night.

I normally don't work real early, but I had to be at work 6:30 am Monday, meaning had to be up at 5:30. I laid in bed till around 12:30 and just about fell asleep, when my daughter woke up crying.

That was it.

I laid awake for another hour, then she started crying again. I picked her up, laid her next to my wife, then laid on the couch. Tossed and turned. Eventually, my wife laid her into her own bed and I came back in. Then the dog had to go out. I never fell asleep till at least 3:30. Then all week after that I was up too early because Kenleigh kept waking up way too early, and I was behind on sleep all week. I just finally got caught back up today.

Now I work tonight and won't get home til 12, and have to be back at 7am, so I guess we'll start all over again.

You could take the advice Fletch gave me...turn your clock forward and go to sleep early. Of course, not all of us are robots who can sleep at will.

I've been thinking about buying that Simply Sleep stuff from Tylenol, but I know taking Tylenol PM makes me drowsy as hell the next day, so much so that I'm better off just going with the lack of sleep. I wonder if that stuff makes you drowsy too.

Yeah, I have this problem too. My brain goes into hyperdrive around midnight and it's hard to fall asleep. If I happen to wake up between 3am and 6am, then there is little chance of me falling back asleep. I swear I function on 4 hours of sleep every day.

I'll be interested in the suggestions you get. I never wanted to use sleeping pills because they say you need a full 8 hours of sleep (which can be difficult), and some people tend to get addicted to them.

On the brightside, I do some of my best thinking while late at night, wide-awake, with my brain running on hyper-drive. One of these nights, maybe I'll think of a solution for world peace or the cure for cancer or something.

Last night I awoke at 3:30 and just couldn't fall asleep again.

If I get 4 hours of sleep in then I awake, I cannot go back to sleep. Any more than 6 hours on a weeknight, and I'm groggy the next day.

I know you some of you guys think that 4-6 hours sleep is just fine for you and you function fine with it but, more and more research is showing that lack of sleep is very bad for your health. Now most of you know I'm a bit skeptical of these types of research studies, etc., but I do think it takes a toll on you when you do not get the proper amount of sleep.

Love,

Dr. Jules

I agree in some aspects, I prefer 6-7 hrs.

On Saturday and Sunday I get 8 or more depending. For me it's just weekdays I sleep less, I don't know why, it's just how I personally have been as long as I can remember.

If my body tells me to go to bed I do. If the clock strikes 12 and I'm not tired yet, I go lay in bed and hope I can fall asleep.

If you guys want to take drugs, why not try melatonin? It's something your body produces naturally anyway.

Dear Dr. Jules,
I function on 4-6 hours of sleep but I'm not fine with it. I'd absolutely love to be able to go to bed at 10:00 pm and wake up at 6:00 am. The problem is, as others have stated, I seem to get more energy as the night goes on. Some nights I'm falling asleep at 7:30 pm but then I have to help get kids to bed, clean the kitchen, etc and by 9:30 pm I'm wide awake again and seldom fall asleep before midnight. I recognize that I'm groggy during the day and not functioning at 100% and I'd love to change it. Please advise.

Sincerely
Restless in Raleigh

I'm in the same boat and have been pondering going to the Dr. for Ambien or something.

Sunday's are the worst with the next few days not much better. Usually by Thursday I look like a raccoon and I sleep from shear exhaustion.

Last night I took Melatonin. I did sleep a bit better, but I had some very strange dreams. Someone else told me to try "Simply Sleep" as someone pointed out earlier. I haven't tried it yet, but they swear by it.

I'm sure lack of exercise is also an issue for me. When I go on vacation, I sleep like a baby, but I never just "relax" on vaca. Seems like every day I'm running to some tourist trap, standing in line / walking all day, or gambling the day away.

I have been running on about 4 hours a night for more years than some of the posters have been alive. Is it enough.... nope, but one of these days I'll get to slow down The nice part about it is once I lay down at night I'm snoring in 30 seconds

Well, and again you can put as much stock as you like in what some of the medical community have been finding with this, but they are saying it's the long term effects, which you may have not experienced yet. So, slow down now!

Wasn't that long ago, I recall a study that suggest 2 periods of 3 hour naps, placed at particular times, was sufficient sleep for most adults.

If I could squeeze a 2-3 hour nap in around 1pm every day, I could go really go.

It's a two or three hour nap what most people get every night

You just asked if a sleeping aid makes you drowsy, then wonder why I give you a hard time. You remind me of this show that used to be on TV called "Kids Say the Darndest Things"

A person your age shouldn't need to take drugs to fall asleep, these are adult products, don't stay up all night and sleep all day, that would help.

And of course you're making assumptions that I sleep all day and stay up all night.

As for the drowsy thing, I meant IN THE MORNING, after 8 hours sleep. Freshman year I was struggling to stay awake in my morning classes because I took Tylenol PM and I could tell a huge difference if I got maybe 6 hours sleep and didn't take Tylenol PM.

I'm tired after 6 PM Sportscenter but once after 11 PM I seem to wake up again.

No mid-afternoon naps, no evening naps.

I find it hilarious that you don't think people my age don't have trouble sleeping.

I'm glad I could humor you, I get that feeling when I read just about all your threads and posts.

A kid your age shouldn't have trouble sleeping, I've read enough of your posts and easily can assume you stay up way too late, and really don't try to fall asleep, your too busy not studying, boozing it up, and arguing with your roommates. When was the last time you went to bed before 11pm? I know you'll say recently, but I won't buy it.

I never had any trouble sleeping whatsoever until about 4 months ago when my GF moved in. She would CONSTANTLY get up in the middle of the night, like always tossing and turning, and had to get up at maybe 5:30am for work, or something ridiculous like that (i know i know..). So basically I got that simply sleep stuff out of necessity, and it works really well. Now that she's gone, I still use it and I've never really been drowsy the next day, but then again, I'm usually up very late and I work for myself, so I normally don't even bother setting the alarm clock.

There are plenty of reasons for not being able to sleep, even at Ammo's age, and they aren't limited tot he reasons you gave.. I'm right around his age as well and while it isn't a constant problem, I go through periods of time where I can't sleep as well. These periods of time can only be a few days, but the one I've been in now has lasted a few months. I am tired almost all the time, but then I lay down to actually go to sleep, all of a sudden I'm basically wide awake. It doesn't matter what time I try to sleep, it is always the same problem.

Also, since when are sleeping troubles limited to "older" people? I'm just curious as to why "younger" people aren't suppose to have these troubles.

I remember college (vaguely) and I know I stayed up late, studied as little as possible, boozed it up, etc... I never had trouble sleeping, heck in college you can work in naps, plan your classes so you can sleep in, you have all the freedom in the world (typically)... In fact that might be a large part of the problem, I still go to sleep the same time I did when I was in college but the earliest I got up then was 8:30-9:00.. now I'm up before 6:00.... so it's not the time I go to bed that's changed, it's the time I get up... Of course I've only been out of college for 19 years so my body might still be adjusting...

Then I would suggest seeing a doctor. It isn't normal for someone in there teens or 20's to have sleeping problems, there are many techniques which don't require taking a drug, that can help a person who have sleeping disorders but people in your age bracket rarely have these troubles. I'm no doctor, but have known enough people in your age bracket that never had these issues, normally it's the opposite.

Two questions come to mind here ... althought the first may answer the second. 1) Why would "that" have any effect on sleeping? ... and 2) Have you been researching this for conclusive data?

I had one of my neighbors call me the other night because he saw my lights on and he couldn't sleep, wanted to know if I wanted to come over and hang out, his wife was out of town. I walk over at about 10:30 and he's whining about not being able to sleep as he sits there watching television eating a bag of chips and drinking a Diet Coke....

Gee, wonder why he can't sleep.
