Browns turn focus on linebacker Thompson Posted by Tony Grossi March 12, 2008 21:37PM
Nearly tapped out in free-agency spending without having added any linebackers, the Browns are focusing on re-signing Chaun Thompson.
They have begun negotiations to bring back the defensive role player and special teams contributor, and hope to have a deal soon. Thompson, a second-round draft choice of the Browns in 2003, apparently has not visited any other teams.
The Browns did visit on Wednesday with former Denver Broncos linebacker Al Wilson, who has not played since 2006 because of neck injuries. Wilson was cleared to return in January by a back specialist.
The Browns gave Wilson a physical exam Wednesday, but a team source indicated there was nothing further to report.
Wilson, 30, made the Pro Bowl five times in eight years with the Broncos before suffering a neck injury while colliding with teammate Gerard Warren, a former Brown, in the final month of the 2006 season. The Broncos released him in April 2007. He had a base salary of $5.2 million at the time.
If the Browns pass on Wilson, their options at linebacker are dwindling.
They elected not to offer contracts to Tennessee's Travis LaBoy, who signed with Arizona, and Arizona's Darryl Blackstock, who signed with Cincinnati. They also passed on Baltimore's Nick Greisen.
The Browns have not visited with Pittsburgh's Clark Haggans, a team source said. They also have no apparent interest in Takeo Spikes, the former Eagle, Bill and Bengal. Spikes' agent said the Browns have not contacted him. Spikes, 31, made his first visit to San Francisco on Wednesday

I'd always believed Thompson would be a goner, figuring at least ONE team would offer him a job as an OLB in a 4-3 scheme. Apparently, that isn't the case...............

I like Thompson and believe that he was a valuable member of the team last year.
I also think he has the potential to be a productive linebacker.
I hope we sign him.

I agree that he would be better as a 4-3 OLB. But i've got no problem with him coming here. He can back up both LB positions and I'd like to see him try to get a starting job at OLB. He's a better all around LB than Peek.
Bellow Willie in run coverage but better in pass coverage. The guy's athletic and a good special teamer as well. He's definitely affordable and good enough to play for us, if just as a backup

I hope we get him signed. He's fit in progressively well each season, has always played hard and has made some really nice plays and come off the bench effectively the past couple years when we got thin due to injury.

I like CT. He has survived three years under Romeo, after Butch (& not Phil) drafted him, and is doing something right because he sticks around. In not any order: I would say they like his work ethic, athletic ability and his character. Chaun seems like a good guy.

Thompson is a keeper. He can play all LB positions whenever needed and is a valuable specail teamer. He knows the defensive scheme and the players around him. People were down on him because Butch drafted him at least 2 rounds too high.
He did tie the team in sacks the year before Wimbley got here with 6.5. That might even be more then what Wimbley got last year.
Also decent in coverage.

You make it sound like he went somewhere else. We're trying to resign him and keep him here in Cleveland.
Interesting that we made no offers to LaBoy, Blackstock and Greisen. And no contact with Haggans or Spikes. Just kinda makes you wonder what kinds of discussions are going on about these guys in coaches meetings. I'm not saying we should have signed any of them, cuz' obviously the brass has their reasons. It would just be cool to be a fly on the wall during one of these meet and greet sessions to see what really transpires. All we know is guys come, guys go and that's all there is to it.

Here too, But word is he only wanted to sign if there was a chance to start...
Thompson is a excellent special teamer, & a back up LB, yes he's quick and isnt afraid to hit somebody, he can cover but gets lost in coverage to many times, if starting, opponents would spot this and take big advantage out of him, but as a back-up he's not in enough for them to discover this.
If we cant sign somebody & wilson isnt healthy enough to take a chance on , than i do hope we re-sign him, Thompson can be a valuble part of this team, but as for needing him...no we dont need him.

I don't really like him but I will agree he was a valuable player last year and why I quit calling him Chump. The above was simply a old habit.
I don't mind signing him. While he isn't going to be the monster some may have envisioned, he did a good job on special teams last year and offers adequate back-up at backer in spot duty.
I think the fact nobody talked to Chaun is a signal to him and a signal as to where is offer is going to positioned.

I agree with ya. I've always been in Chaun's corner, but aside from that he has improved every year that he has been here -AND- he has gotten experience in every spot back there. He's also quite good on special teams. Add in that he has the two things that can't be learned, built or coached - size and speed - and he's very much worth resigning. Given that he is now like a 5 year veteran, his contract will probably end up being similar to what he got when we drafted him.... and that is quite affordable.

Nothing to write home about...he's not the deer in the headlights that he's been ..I'm still not in favor of him due to not being insticntive and reactive enough..ST's is where he's good at..and clearly is a backup..

Phil is looking to add team depth at this point. CT is a solid depth guy so the match should be made. I'd imagine that Phil thinks Peek can come back and be effective this season. Perhaps that's why he didn't want to spend a ton of cash on guys (Blackstock, LaBoy) who insisted on starting. Just a hunch.
Chaun can still make some plays. Hope he and Phil can get something done. Then it's onto the draft for more depth and perhaps, several gems.

It just seemed to me like we were looking in another direction. Chaun's a guy I like a lot. I figured we were low balling him hardcore, and that he was trying to go to a 4-3 team where he could be more effective.
I never really thought he got a fair deal here anyway. He seems to play well at ILB when he gets his shot and he only had one shot at 3-4 OLB. While he wasn't paticularly good at that, nobody was on that team that year. May be Leigh Bodden

Cleveland Browns waiting for Chaun Thompson to visit Houston Posted by Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter March 13, 2008 16:21PM The Browns were thrown a curveball today when linebacker Chaun Thompson elected to visit the Houston Texans. Thompson and the Browns were honing in on a two-year contract when the Texans called. Thompson is a native of Texas and was intrigued about the idea of returning to his home state to continue his NFL career. So far, the Texans have not discussed contract numbers. Thompson will visit through the day and will take a physical Friday morning. If the Texans don't offer him a contract, Thompson could return on Friday and re-sign with the Browns. But nothing is guaranteed. Tony Grossi

I was hoping that the Browns would upgrade CT... Maybe they still will...
But you can't do everything every year... CT shows up on ST's and seems to make plays in the run game... Coverage is another story and so is pressuring the QB... Oh well maybe after June 1st or next year...

Somewhat surprising to see your name associated with the start of a CT thread.
In our present LB situation, it would be good if we could keep him.

I'm inclined to believe that.........FINALLY.........a team that runs the 4-3 has come calling, which is the base defense that Thompson fits into.
It's no secret that Thompson isn't suited to the 3-4. He doesn't have the rush ability to be an OLB, and he isn't tough enough against the run to play the middle. His best bet has always been to be a "chase and tackle" guy outside in the 4-3, where his athletic ability could best be used. I know people around here didn't want to believe that, as is their right, but as the years have moved on, there's just too much evidence pointing to the fact that he was a backup when starting, a backup now, and a backup in the future. So when a 4-3 team came calling, hey, Chaun's best bet is to go talk to them.
Having said all that, I'd welcome him back in the role that's been carved out for him, which is as a TRUE backup LB and special teamer. He's appeared to be a really good egg, has never complained about how things turned out, and for all intensive purposes has been a good teammate.

So if former 2nd rounder Thompson leaves via free agency, do we get compensatory picks?

That's a damned good question Rid. I think we just might. However, I don't know exactly how that part of the compensatory pick system works. I know it's arbitrary to a certain degree, but still.......

So if former 2nd rounder Thompson leaves via free agency, do we get compensatory picks?
COMPENSATORY DRAFT PICKS: Compensation awarded by the league to teams who lost more UFAs than they signed. Compensation is in the form of extra draft picks added to the end of rounds three through seven. The quantity of picks is equivalent to the difference of UFAs signed to UFAs lost.
For example, if a team loses 4 UFAs and signs 1 UFA, they will receive three Compensatory Selections. The value of the picks is determined by the difference of the contracts signed by the players lost and those acquired. The highest possible compensatory pick is the 31st of the third round (91st overall). If a team has signed an equal number or more UFAs than it lost, no "Compensatory Picks" are awarded.
Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula that was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a team is covered by this formula.

Just a question that someone could answer. Does anyone know if Thompson was tagged? If he was and is signed we would get a pick of some type wouldn't we? I know Holley was tagged with a second round pick, but I don't know about Thompson. Just wondering.

Didnt Ricardo Colclough play for the Browns last year. He was an UFA.
I also wonder if Lewis counts since he played here last year? I didnt think it counted when you re-sign your own.
If that is so, and they lost Thompson. Thompson and Colclough would be 2 and Stallowrth would be 1 incoming. Also, if Fraser or McKinnley signs somewhere else.
