Chaun Thompson will be visiting Houston today. The unrestricted free agent graduated from football powerhouse West Texas A&M and may be interested in returning to his home state. As we've reported over the last several weeks, Thompson would like to see if it's possible to play a larger role on defense. The linebacker has been yanked from position-to-position and scheme-to-scheme during his stay in Cleveland, and has been making his biggest impact on special teams in recent years.

Didnt Ricardo Colclough play for the Browns last year. He was an UFA.

I also wonder if Lewis counts since he played here last year? I didnt think it counted when you re-sign your own.

If that is so, and they lost Thompson. Thompson and Colclough would be 2 and Stallowrth would be 1 incoming. Also, if Fraser or McKinnley signs somewhere else.

To date, by my reckoning, we signed Stallworth and Hadnot, and lost Fraser and Colclough.

Somewhat surprising to see your name associated with the start of a CT thread.

In our present LB situation, it would be good if we could keep him.

I just report the facts.

No doubt Chaun has never been one of my favorites, but he did play better last year as a special teams contributor.

I think it is pretty clear to everyone where he stands as a player by now, so with that in focus, as a special teams guy, spot back-up player, we could do worse.

Grossi mentions it at the end of this article...

Cleveland Browns re-sign defensive back Gary Baxter
Friday, March 14, 2008Tony GrossiPlain Dealer Reporter
Gary Baxter is going to try it again.

The Browns signed the star-crossed defensive back to a one-year contract Thursday in hopes of seeing him complete his comeback in a Cleveland uniform.

"This is very important for me to sign a one-year deal here and to finish something I started," Baxter said in a statement released by the club. "This has been a long process, but right now everything is going well and I'm going to continue my quest to make history."

Baxter is trying to become the first NFL player to return from patella tendon surgeries on both knees. He had the surgeries in October 2006. Nine months later, he was cleared to practice for the opening of training camp in 2007.

Baxter made the final roster but didn't appear in a game. He was placed on injured reserve with 10 games left.

"I'm running and feeling good," Baxter said. "I'm putting in everything I've got. Things are looking very positive."

Before he joined the Browns as a free agent in 2005, Baxter never missed a game because of injury in four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.

In Cleveland, he has missed 40 of 48 games because of two pectoral injuries and the two knee injuries.

In other developments on Thursday:

Free-agent linebacker Chaun Thompson suspended talks with the Browns to visit the Houston Texans. Thompson was intrigued by a potential starting role with his home-state team. He has a two-year offer from the Browns on the table.

A new pass-rusher possibility opened up when Detroit released Kalimba Edwards. The Browns tried to sign him in free agency in 2006, but Edwards stayed with the Lions. That decision resulted in the Browns drafting Kamerion Wimbley ahead of tackle Haloti Ngata, who went to the Ravens. The Browns have been trying to find a bookend pass-rusher to complement Wimbley ever since.

Former Denver linebacker Al Wilson ended a Browns visit without a contract.

The Browns re-signed fullback Charles Ali to a one-year contract.

Thompson Is No Longer a Brown

Cleveland Browns lose Chaun Thompson to Houston
Posted by Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter March 14, 2008 14:10PM
Browns free agent linebacker Chaun Thompson has agreed to a two-year contract with the Houston Texans. A source said Thompson will get a $650,000 signing bonus and $2.4 million overall.

"At the end of the day, it brings him back home to Texas," said agent Jeff Griffin. "This is just good family-wise for him."

The Browns offered Thompson a two-year deal similar to the one he'll sign in Houston.

The defection means the Browns will turn to other options at linebacker, including Kalimba Edwards, Al Wilson and possibly Rosevelt Colvin.

Forgot about Hadnot. Where did Fraser sign? Also, we now lost Thompson, so we are down one UFA. But it looks like it will even out if they get a vet to replace Thompson. I would rather have Thompson here though.

Cant be mad at Thompson for going back home. I guess you win some and lose some with players going back home. Thats how the Browns signed a few FAs recentley(JJ, Bentley) I wish Thompson well.

j/c:

I think this is a loss for the Browns.

CT was very, very good on Special teams. Not just good.........he was an integral member of that unit and we will feel the effects of his departure.

I also think he contributed as a LBer this year and that he had some potential. I thought he could improve and that he would be a valuable member of the defensive rotation.

I'm kinda bummed about this loss.

I like Chaun and wish him well, but special teamers are replaceable. Mason Unck was a great special teamer for us 2 years ago, he got hurt and was on IR last season and Chaun stepped up on special teams.

Special teamers are always replaceable without hurting yourself.

Yeah, but Thompson never made any impact in the last 2 years anyway so it's no big loss. Thompson is very replaceable on special teams and especially on defense.

My view is that he was the best LB on the squad. Better than D'qwell and even Wimbley.

I think he was treated badly by this team and dissed because he was a Butch pick.
I wish him well in Houston though. I think he'll be starting from day 1 with them.

I have a feeling Crennel, Savage, and Tucker disagree with you.

As to remaining Botch picks: Sean Jones, Kellen Winslow, Andra Davis, Ryan Pontbriand. A lonely list.

It could be argued the Winslow pick wasn't good (the trade part). Hitting four picks out of ~28 doesn't impress me.

I am with you...I am a little bummed about this one too.

He has made some great plays. the first one that pops out to me is his play that ended the Buffalo Bills Ice Bowl....And like you said....He was more than just good on Special Teams.....

It would be really cool if we got a compensation pick for him. He was a 2nd round draft pick, after all.

Good point.

I know they have some weighted system...who you sign and who you lose.

Just not sure when they would come in to play....I don't think it would be for this draft. I think it would be for next years.

Peen...Those Comp Picks have everything to do with Contract Size...It's not just how many u sign versus lose...

Have we had a Comp Pick since 99???...NO...Reason is that we've only let JUNK go via FA...

We won't see a Comp Pick until we let a Winslow/Edwards/Wimbley go via FA...And sign noone of comparable value...

After posting I poked around some and got that information in a football futures forum. The author has this years picks projected and evidently he is pretty accurate in his formula. The NFL has never released exactly how they figure these picks, but this guy seems to have hit on something pretty close.

He says it is mostly contract size, how much and well a player plays while starting, and to a degree post season honors.

Chauns contract wasn't that big and he sure didn't play much or well as a starter.

I'm sure that they do.

Winslow won't be back after his contract expires.

No clue why Davis is still here. He isn't particularly good for anything.

Jones was a pick of Butch Davis' final year. As soon as his contract is up, he'll be moving on as well.

Savage isn't dumb enough to let a good player go simply because the player was from the Butch era, that's simply rediculuous. There's no way that Savage lets Jones walk - unless Baxter plays and unseats him at SS, which isn't going to happen. Savage will also not let Winslow walk either unless Winslow doesn't want to be here.

As to your earlier post, there is absolutely NO WAY that Chaun Thompson was our best LB!!! There is a reason he was just a special teamer and nothing more! He wasn't even the top BACKUP at ANY LB POSITION! He was Antwan Peek/McGinests & Williams' backups at OLB & ILB! It has NOTHING to do with him being a Butch pick.

You're inferring one of two things, and I'm not sure either actually applies here. I haven't read anything which would indicate his unhappiness on this team, nor have I seen anything that would suggest we're unhappy with him. At this point in time, I'm inclined to believe he's in line for a new contract sometime this year or next.

I'm on the list that feels Thomspon's position can be upgraded..too many backers come out or are released that have better instincts and fit our defense better..
Even ST players can be upgraded and Savage has done that also..

Soooo Thompson is gone and he'll be replaced..

You've said it before Toadie, "Follow the money."

It won't come down to whether he wants to stay here or whether we want him to stay. It is about money.

We had a two-year contract, reportedly about the same as what was given by the Texans. You would think that if Chaun was comfy here, he could have been persuaded to stay. He didn't stay because he knew his abilities weren't going to be used and he would be severely limited in his future earnings by staying. I would have left for Texas too!

Once Jones' and Winslow's contracts are up, expect for them to be gone as well. Winslow is already clamoring for a renegotiation of his contract to better suit him and he knows that he's a huge part of this offense. He wouldn't be easy to replace via FA or the draft. We won't be able to afford to keep him.

I think Savage will find a way to sign him regardless of our cap situation, which I don't think will be a problem anyway. The way Savage has been managing the cap, the Browns will remain in good cap position and will be able to afford whoever we want to sign.

Sure we will. That doesn't necessarily mean he'll sign with us, but I don't see why we wouldn't be able to afford him.

The salary cap is doing nothing but increasing, and at his position (TE), numbers around the league aren't ridiculously high. The average of the 5 highest paid TE's is about 4.5 million. He'll probably be the highest paid Tight End out there when he signs a new deal, but I wouldn't expect it to be anything Moss-like.

My guess is that it'd be somewhere around 6 or 7 mil per. And for a player that makes as big an impact as him, I'd take that.
