William Green didn't run hard?

He ran hard...

Yeah, right in to the back of his lineman.

He had the vision of Stevie Wonder.

Hell, even that comparison might be a knock against Stevie.

I completely concur... Mr. Bowjangles was a total bust... One of the worst draft picks in the entire history of the Cleveland Browns.

William Green Sucked! Period!

Well ur right. If Phil would have been here we would not have drafted William Green. We would have already had LT.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock reports free agent William Green showed up to the Boston College Pro Day in "great shape," but ran a 4.85 forty.

He benched 225 25 times and jumped 42" vertically, but running backs with 4.8+ forty times don't get signed This could officially end Green's career.

Enough said.

Wow, I knew linebackers in highschool that ran a faster 40 time.

42" vert is pretty impressive.

4.85 forty time? Not so impressive.

I remember watching a draft show about 2 weeks prior to the draft & they had the Browns selecting William Green, the Draft guy said, dont do it, stats & college game looks good but he dosent transition into the pro game, 5 years from now you'll be sorry.....well here we are and yes were sorry....

good luck anyway William, for your kids, stay on the right path, no matter what

You can say that about a lot of guys man...

It's a toss up with the draft.. you hope to get the best you can out of someone, but sometimes things keep that from happening...

Green COULD play in the NFL... his off the field issues got in the way of that, which in turn caused a Green vs. Suggs debate for years. There were plenty of games where Green showed his talent, even with a HORRIBLE o-line.

With a 4.85 40, he'd better be packing on 20 pounds and trying to play fullback.

Either you misread/misheard, or someone is wrong here, because I read he ran between 4.65 and 4.68. Not 4.85 as you had Mayock saying. It also claims he "slipped" both times, but who really knows.

Here's an exerpt:

Working out at Boston College’s pro day, Green arrived in peak physical condition and showcased some explosiveness in the vertical (42 inches), broad jump (11 feet), 20-yard shuttle (four seconds), three-cone drill (6.67 seconds) and bench press (25 reps at 225 pounds). All those numbers compare very favorably with the top running backs in this year’s draft. Only a pair of slips during the 40-yard dash left something to be desired, as he ran between 4.65 and 4.68 seconds on his two attempts. Green said that he ran a pair of sub-4.4 second 40-yard dashes while working out in Arizona prior to his day at Boston College.

Yeah, I said either you misheard or someone else is wrong. I'd trust the guy who was actually there.

If those numbers are true, those aren't bad at all. Great vert and broad jump, and not a great 40 time, but if he truly slipped both times and ran a sub 4.40 time previously, I can see someone giving him a shot in camp.

I remember him having poor 4.60 40 at the combine the year he came out. His speed in shorts really wasn't an issue. He later showed he had enough breakaway speed in pads to take it the distance. Not sure if that's still the case now, but a 40 time in the 4.60s for him is nothing new, and imo, not cause for concern. Speed wasn't his problem.

straightline speed wasn't his problem. Everything else about his game, his demeanor, and his dedication to the Browns were problems.

Green was a bum. No vision, no cutting ability, poor blocker, poor receiver, zero change of direction, and for a guy his size, he had zero power.

No scout with an ounce of sense is going to give Green a thumbs-up to their bosses, not if they want to continue to be gainfully employeed.

Make no mistake about it. Even if he was an angel off the field, his distinctly inferior game on it would have landed him exactly where he is now: Looking for work.

I wish we could vote to lock threads, because the sooner we stop looking into our failed past, the better.

While I'm at it, William Green isn't even about "Pure Football." He's so irrelevent that this belongs in the Tailgate.

Seems like you and I are the only two to openly admit to liking Green.

Although, many were in his corner when he played for us, but now he's this and he's that.

In the end people, let's just remember that this is a GAME, and William Green is a person, not just a player, or a roster spot. Some of the things said about him in this thread are just downright disgraceful, and uncalled for.

I clearly remember that he and Tim Couch (two of the most maligned Browns of the expansion era) led us to our only playoff appearance...that cannot be taken away from them.

I think William can pull off the upset, and make a good living in the league again. Nothing can stand in his way if he doesn't let it!

I do too. His game regressed from his first two years. I don't know what happened to him, maybe he became to nice. He has some ability, enough to be someones 3rd RB and special teamer.

To be a 3rd RB, you have to bring something specialized to the table. Green was neither a good blocker or receiver, so he's clearly not a guy who's going to come in on passing situations. He never showed any ability to return kickoffs or punts, so that limits his chances there.

So a GM somewhere is going to give a 28-year old RB, who runs in the 4.7 range, who has been out of the league two years, and who doesn't fill a role as a blocker or receiver, a roster spot? One that could be taken by an accomplished special teamer or developmental player?

He stands an outside chance of being invited to camp, but he stands zero chance of sticking.

The sad truth was that BEFORE he left the league for two years nobody wanted him. So why should someone want him now? Is some magical fairy going to swoop in and give him back something he didn't have six years ago?

GREEN’S WAIT LIKELY TO CONTINUE
Posted by Mike Florio on March 19, 2008, 8:59 a.m.
Though the folks at Yahoo! Sports have been doing their part of late to trumpet the comeback attempt of former NFL running back William Green, we’ve yet to hear anything positive about him from any of our various league contacts.

“I can’t think of anyone who would want him,” one experienced NFL talent evaluator told us on Tuesday night.

“Why not?” we asked. “Too old? Turd?”

“All of the above,” the source said. “And he wasn’t good when he played.”

Green was a first-round pick of the Browns in 2002, and he last played in 2005. His career average is 3.7 yards per carry.

The B.C. product participated in the Tuesday Pro Day workout at Chestnut Hill. Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports has the numbers, which are respectable but not spectacular.

And, as to Green’s times in the 40-yard dash, the performance was downright mediocre. Per Robinson, Green ran between 4.65 and 4.68 seconds in two attempts. Green supposedly “slipped” each time (maybe he’d just eaten popcorn . . . with his feet).

Green nevertheless claims that he recently ran a pair of sub-4.4s in Arizona. Maybe he being chased at the time by a woman wielding a knife.

(By the way, Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports offered up this stunningly lame justification for the infamous cutlery incident on Monday: “In 2003, while Green was serving his suspension and before they were married, Asia tried to ’scare’ him into paying attention by threatening him with a knife. Green was cut in the incident, although both maintain some of the media’s accounts were overstated.” Um, the media reports were that Green’s girlfriend cut him with a knife. If Green’s girlfriend cut him with a knife, how were the reports overstated?)

As to Green’s current prospects, and as we’ve said as to other players in the past, 31 teams can say no. It takes only one to say yes. Green’s agent, Neil Schwartz, is optimistic that a “yes” will come.

“I spoke to a lot of teams that were interested in seeing him, and I think he validated that he’s ready to play football again,” Schwartz told Robinson. “We’re just looking for the best opportunity for him right now. We just want teams to know that he’s ready to play and that we’re not running from the past. We recognize that because of the past that teams don’t want to take an economic risk, and we don’t expect that. All we want is a chance.”

We respect anyone who is pursuing a dream, especially when the odds are stacked firmly against it. But Green had his chance in the sun, and he fumbled it away. With a bumper crop of young and healthy running backs from the college ranks poised to flood the NFL next month, it’s unlikely that Green will be wearing an NFL uniform in September.

"Unlikely" is a far-more generous term than I'd use.

So wadda say Toad, bring him in for a look?

I'm not going to look it up right now, but if you count his last 8 games of 2002 and his first games in 2003, until he went into his freefall, he was on...oh hell, I looked it up...

In 2002 Green ran for 736 yards, (4.2 avg) in games 9-16. ESPN

In 2003 he ran for 559 yards, (3.9 avg) in the first 7 games. Yahoo

That's 1295 yards in 15 consecutive games. Really not that bad.

Then he became infamous and it all went downhill from there.

He really started out bad his rookie seasonin 2002. Then the light seemed to come on for him the second half of that season, even behind our OL at that time. He carried that on into 2003 season until his problems caught up with him.

If he's straightened up and has learned about commitment he's worth a camp invite for someone.

At the very least he's worth his own thread for a little bit.

IMHO, it was never a case of the "light coming on" for Green. It was always a case of whether or not a hole opened up right in front of him.

I know where this is going to lead, but I'm going to say it anyway The reason we made a playoff push was because for that brief time period, we actually had some solid offensive line play. It was during that rare time when holes in the running game would open up where they were supposed to, which is why Green actually looked as though he'd figured it out. Before and after, the line play wasn't good, and so Green looked bad because he simply cannot create.

The only positive for Green was he had a quick burst through an open hole. If it was there, he'd hit it. If it wasn't, he'd start with his pitter-pat routine and land on the ground, either of his own volition or by way of a single tackler.

Then, as noted, you have to ask what else does he bring to the table? Can he block? Not at all. Can he catch? Again, not at all. Can he return kicks or punts? Not that any of us have seen. Can he be a gunner on special teams? He's not fast enough, nor is he elusive. In short, Green, at his best, was a one-trick pony. Any team in the league can get that from any 7th round RB. There are a ton of Echimondu's out there that would be far less expensive than Green, who's going to command league minimum for a 5th year player.

Nah, 'Dub, there's not going to be any legitimate interest in Green. He may get a glimpse as camp fodder as a favor to his agent, but when the season starts, he'll be at home watching on TV. There are just too many other backs out there that can do more than Green did during his prime.

For Gods SAKE man! Are you trying to insinuate that pass protection and run blocking makes your O look better?

That's just silly!

Glad he is in a better place. Hope he finds happiness, and his life has been a horror. He was picked to be special; proved he wasn't and did not succeed in reading a hole, but that wasn't all him or always him. Not sure that I am in the mood for a project. don't want Ben Gay back either. The Pipe Dream should get a shot if he is good enough. Don't want him in Berea though. I really do wish him the best.

well, to be honest, I think he will get some looks from teams and may even land a backup role, too many teams now-a-days like to have multiple RB's in case of injury or just for attack purposes. I think he could do fairly well if he lands on a team with a decent-to-very good O line. Though I don't think WE need to go back in time, we should have brought in Michael Turner, Turner with Lewis, now that would be a one/two punch on the ground. LOL I sincerely wish Green the best. I never thought of him as a great RB but I didnt' hate the guy either.

Yeah, but, if, only, maybe, probably, shoulda, coulda, woulda...

He didn't, He missed too many games, for the wrong reasons and injury, had little poise, couldn't hit a hole, had little to no patience or vision, could'nt set up blocks or run behind a fullback, was a hor-ri-ble dancer, got suspended, was on everybodys BUST list for his first 9 or 10 games as a Brown and was a total non factor at the end of his Browns tenure. Off the field, well lets just put it this way, he would have been a great Bengal... If you look at his total body of work, his acutal production, value to the team and organization overall, take a look at his reputation as a person and player the picture was clear about this guy... Look @ every game he was avaliable, should have been avaliable and played then do the math, and look at the ROI...

Maybe if he does well in the CFL for a few years and keeps his nose clean someone will give him a look...

He'd end up going to the Pro Bowl after running for 1900 yards during the season and 250 against the Browns in the AFC Championship game and another 200 yards in a Patriots Superbowl victory

Obviously, I don't believe that, but why is it that the Pats always seem to get the most out of thier reclaimation projects.. Corey what's his name that was with the Bengals and Randy Moss or Vrable!

What the hell is in the water in New England

"Neither guy" would have been the best choice.

Duckett hasn't had a tremendous career either. He has been in the league for 6 years, and hasn't hit the 3000 yard rushing mark yet, and will be with his 4th team this coming season. . He's hardly an example of a successful 1st round pick.

I liked Willie. I thought he was a strong, hard runner. There just wasn't much a skill player could do on our teams of crappy OL's.

Unfortunately, he didn't have his mind right.

He would be a good fit with us right now. Won't command much money, be JL's backup. But as J said, we just won't be going backwards at this point.
I hope he does well in his comeback.

Willie Green would have a better chance with "Dancing with Stars" then he would back in the NFL.
Green was a terrible back. All he would ever do is "dance" behind the line until he got tackled. Jamel White was a better back then he was.

Duck is still in the league has scored around 40 TD's in his career and is considered a viable RB by a consistant playoff team who has been to the SB recently and is making aonther push/run to get back there this season...

Where is Mr. BowJangles in the NFL's big picture??? No-where... Next...

NFL | W. Green works out at Boston College's Pro Day
Tue, 25 Mar 2008 18:44:37 -0700

Updating a previous item, J.J. Pesavento, of Next Level Scouting, reports free-agent RB William Green (Browns) measured a height of 6-foot 1/4 and a weight of 213 pounds at his Pro Day March 18. His hands measured 8 1/2 inches and his arm length was 311 1/4 inches. He ran 10 yards in 1.62 seconds, 20 yards in 2.75 seconds and the 40-yard dash in 4.83 seconds. He measured a 42-inch vertical jump, an 11-foot broad jump and completed 25 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.

I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism
