I had been driving around in a car that was 17 years old. -It gave me everything it had. I'm in a position now to buy something nice but not too nice. I'm not willing to spend over 12,000. I want a pickup truck, preferably a Ford, or Chevy. Wondering if anybody knows where the best deals are around Cleveland, and what your favorite year, make, models, are.

I have until Sunday top buy one. Going by the prices/models I have seen, I'm looking at something between 2000-2003, probably a Chevy.

LOL. It's just my opinion. I saw a LOT of recalls in my time. I know Ford isn't the only one, but they seem to be more publicized... It also makes a bigger impact seeing it all everyday. Plus I don't like their idea of "Built Ford Tough".... What happened to just plain old tough? Good luck to ya! And Congrats!

I definitely like chevy better than ford, but the best truck i ever had was actually a nissan. Lasted forever and didn't require nearly as much maintenance as the chevy.

It's a bit of a drive but check out the website and see if there's anything you like at : www.blueknobauto.com
Another good one to look at and closer is www.ncautoauction.com but they don't have much full size truck inventory.

Check AutoTrader, the paper, Scene Magazine, etc... and see what people might be trying to unload.
Don't be afraid to drive a bit to get to a deal.... and more importantly, don't be afraid to walk away from one if it doesn't seem right.

Dude, there is a ton of information out there. Don't go out and buy a vehicle tomorrow based on what people on here say. Research the hell out of it. Get as much information as you can and make an informed decision.
I researched cars for 4 months before I bought my last car. That might have been over kill, but I started researching way before I knew I was ready to make the purchase. I do that w/all my purchases, such as TVs, stereo equipment, vacuum cleaners, leaf blowers, appliances, etc.
It's worth it in the long run.

I drive the hell out of my 2002 Nissan Frontier 4x4. It's a workhorse that has required nothing more than it's scheduled maintainance. I'll drive it until it dies. And they usually last a long time.
I put 150,000 miles on my last Nissan 4x4 before I traded it in. It was still running great but I wanted the 6 cylinder because the 4 banger just wasn't cutting it in the mountains out here.
I'll buy another when this one dies. Though I'm not happy that truck manufacturers are making their "compact" trucks bigger each year. The new Frontiers are as big as some of the "full sized" trucks of the 90's. If I wanted a land yacht I'd buy a Titan. The smaller truck works better for me as it's easier to park in the city and it's not like I'm working a farm. I just want the higher ground clearance and 6' foot bed.

First I would pick your dealership and than consider purchasing online....Prices listed will be cheaper than on site....Dealers do this to attract out of state customers....I'LL leave the make , model and year to you....

Get on http://www.consumerreports.org and research. Spend a little money now to save yourself thousands later, esp when buying used. For $12k you are going to want to do your homework first. You can even just get it for one month at 5.95. The best 6 bucks you could possibly spend on a purchase like this. subscribe link: https://ec.consumerreports.org/ec/cro/order.htm?INTKEY=I61HLT0

My momma always said, buy in haste repent in leisure. Do you really need a truck or do you just want one? I have a Chevy Tahoe I bought because, I wanted it. I regret that decision every time I fill the 26 gallon tank. It's a good vehicle but I didn't need that much truck. I'm usually the only one in it. It really bothers this cheap old geezer to spend 70 bucks a fillup to drive something I don't need. The moral of the story is make sure you know what you want.

Ram QuadCab here. I'm thankful every day that I live one block away from work. If that weren't the case, I'd sell the thing and get something either more fun or more economical (You mean they don't make Cobra's that get 35 MPG? ).
Topic at hand....
Advice on buying a car............Just PM GM. We can give you all the advice in the world, but you should ask the pro. He's seen every good buy and every regretful impulse buy in the world. I know how to buy a car without ever leaving my house (except for the final test drive) while knowing that if a guy really wants to sell a car, he'll split the holdback. You'd leave a hundred or two hundred on the table, but it's worth not having to dicker around with a low-level salesman. (hint: Find the fleet manager).
That bit of rambling is reliable, but you should really trust a guy in the biz, and that's GM. He'll steer you straight.

Employees almost always are more likely to bad mouth their own company. I think it's human nature. By the way, Ford trucks, as a category, are the most purchased vehicle in the world, Followed by Toyota Corollas.
So somebody must like 'em. Personally, I'd check consumerreports.org. I've never gone wrong reading the stuff on their website. You may have to subscribe to get all the content that you want but they go off of the ratings of their readers. Which, in my experience, has been pretty accurate.
Good Luck

You also might want to get your hands on a Kelly Blue Book, it tells the actual value of the car you want to buy. Other suggestion, always check the VIN number on the vehicle.

What happens when you combine Chevy trucks and GMC trucks? Afterall, they are the same truck when you get right down to it.

Believe me, I know more Ford stats and record than I care to, as I said, the post was only my opinion. There was only about 5 of us out of 200+ who didn't own a Ford. So not every employee wil bad mouth.

I was out in California a few years ago, and spent a few days driving around a Toyota Tundra. I liked it's handling a lot better than some Ford pick-ups I've driven in the past.
Then again, I'm partial to foreign automakers.

For a pick up truck, you can't go wrong with a Toyota (IMO) or a Dodge (in my hubby's opinion - and he's a car guy)

As trucks go, I'm a Ford guy myself. I think that Toyotas are too exensive for what you get...the value isn't there. I think Dodges are chincy.
If you - to the original poster - like the Fords, you can find somebody who works for Ford and have them give you their pin number for what they call the 'X' plan, which is getting the car at cost. Maybe OnB?
I think Toad gave good advice as well, but if you aren't sure, you have to do the test drives first. Once you decide on which one you like, the rest can be done by phone and internet (as long as you don't have a trade).
If you live in a town that has one or two dealers of a manufacturer, I've noticed that they aren't as willing to deal. But if you find out how many dealers in the nearest big city to you, contact all of them and find one that will give you the deal you want. Take a one way ticket to the dealership and pick up your car if the deal is worth it. I've done this several times in the past, and it's worked out quite well. Cities with more competition and higher volume dealerships will give you the best deal.

Are you looking for full-size or mid-size?
Even though I drive a Ford Focus, I'm a Chevy loyalist at heart.
IMO the Chevy Colorado or Silverado can do you no wrong.
If you want something other than a pickup truck that has 4WD, gets good mileage AND is cheap, take a look at the Jeep Patriot. It might be my next ride in a few years.

Good advice.
After you decide on the model, check the Blue Book or Edmund's value for the car. You can do it on-line. This should give you an idea of the value.
Then after you find the car you want to buy, get the VIN and check it on Carfacts. You can find ownership and claims history and might avoid something that will cost you down the road (pun intended).
Good luck and post a picture after you buy (maybe something in front of CBS.)

If I remember correctly, Saab came in and basically redesigned the Malibus. My dad runs a body shop so I hear a lot about this kind of stuff. The new Malbus are nice.

I always buy American cars as well.
They say that Toyota sells so great, but I hardly seen any driven around this area. So if they're selling, they aren't selling here. Maybe because of a GM plant being here in the area, but whatever the reason, there aren't many Toyota's being driven here.

3 buddies of mine drive trucks. One drives a Chevy Silverado (my fav of the 3), a Dodge Dakota (nocomputer Darin), and a Ford F-150. The bud with the Ford has nothing but problems with his truck. So much he is trading it in and following me to a Honda I was one that would never buy foreign until I got a great deal on my first Honda and I have never looked back. Which brings me to my question about new cars. Anyone on the board drive a Nissan Versa hatchback? And, if so, how do you like it? My wife got her front end smashed in after that last snowstorm by some dumb ass lady And she needed a rental car for a while till the damage is repaired and they gave her a Versa. She really likes it and the thing has a lot of room for the kids. She likes it so much I am thinking about getting her one but I know nothing about them or too much about Nissan period. I was looking at their site and saw they are making the Nissan GT-R again. This car looks bad ass!!!! If I could that would be my next car http://www.nissanusa.com/gt-r/index.html
Our honor defend, we will fight to the end, for OHIO! GO BUCKS!
