I completely agree w/you.

It is NOT about the money w/Chad. It IS about the attention, notoriety, and acclaim he receives.

He doesn't think he is going to get enough accolades in Cin-city. He wants to play on a winner because he wants it to be all about him.

No, it isn't about money.................it is about ego.

HA!!! ...an instant classic.

chilling, yet funny at the same time.

somewhat reminiscent of another instant classic- this time, from the cinema:

Even though the thread is about Chad Johnson, the syndrome you describe is pretty common.

Let's call it "Wideoutitis."

or "The Diva Defect."

There are lots of correlations between folks I encounter on my job and the folks who run up and down the field on Sundays.

they both get paid money to what looks like fun to others.
they both work their butts off to get there, then work their butts off to stay there.
The job puts them both in the public domain, for all to see.
A certain amount of ego is necessary... not just to make it, but to survive once they've arrived
Many of their colleagues work hard for little or no personal recognition, yet are forced to seamlessly work with so-called "stars."
Many of those "stars" have been pampered, sheltered, enabled, and excused for years because of their rare abilities. As a result, they have undeveloped, immature personality profiles and deal poorly with adversity. (Coping and adapting are traits of mature adults....)

It's why the Opera Diva (read: broad who can sing like a meadowlark) feels free to have a meltdown at the dress rehearsal because someone left Perrier instead of Evian in her dressing room... and why Wide Receivers like TO, Moss and CJ (read: freakishly fast, strong, agile manchildren) feel free to have their meltdowns the minute it looks like their team might slide to 8-8.

While these people may not be clinical cases, they do exhibit some of the traits of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. In other words, it takes a pretty checked-out individual to take a swing at an authority figure or co-worker... and a lack of empathy for others when one says, "I play when I want to."

For some twisted reason, entertainment fields such as the arts and athletics look the other way when their members display anti-social behavior like this. They make excuses for them, saying things like: "Well... he's an artist, and they're different" or ""He's too valuable at his position to cut just because he's a bunghole."

In these respective fields, there will ALWAYS be brats, bitches, bullies and babies... because the rest of the normal people around them don't borrow a spine- and tell them where the hell to get off. As long as the rest of the so-called "adult world" indulges them with new contracts, bigger money, more press time and Evian water, we have only ourselves to blame.

For every TO there's a Marvin Harrison.
For every Kathleen Battle there's a Joan Sutherland.

Teams keep chanting the "character" mantra, but they keep hiring these high-maintenance fools, even though other fine talent is available... both in the draft and free agency. Until they start walking it like they've been talking it, these same kinds of stories will keep popping up, over and over.

Myself, I'm really tired of it. I'm getting older, and I have less tolerance for immature behavior with every passing year. I'm tired of it when I work my job, and I'm tired of it when I want to forget about my job, and just realax in front of SportsCenter.

...and yeah- I really don't care if you can run faster, jump higher or sing louder than anyone else. If you can't play nice- get the hell out of my Sunday Sandbox. I wanna play with someone else.

Actually, it's both Bugs Bunny and the Three Stooges.. When they say, "what a Maroon" it's a take off on the word "Moron". It was never meant as a way of saying someone was foolish, it was meant as an insult saying they were a "moron"! I knew what you mean however Boise.. I guess that makes me old enough to remember the Stooges and Bugs in thier hayday!

You're sure about Ocho...? I'm not... Didn't insinuate I was... You have nothing to be sorry for, as far as I'm concerned... And it's not ALL about the $$$. Period!!! I doubt there is a single person here that would do anything anybody could ask of them for 25 million dollars…? If you are totally miserable for what ever reason, the money never matters… There are just certain things you won’t do for any amount of $$$...

Like other folks hear have written, who are far more intelligent than I... It's about ego, winning, not winning, not liking being on a sinking ship with little chance of survival...

Buy the way, do you ever watch cartoons? Bugs Bunny? That’s where maroon/s comes from... Bug's way of saying foolish...

I'm not a bit defensive, maybe you are. Never said everybody was all about the money, I said Chad is. I'm sure money would feed that ego just fine. He's got some mouths to feed from what we hear down this way, and the several women who belong to those children are wanting a lot of green.

Whether all that is true or not, I'll stick by my opinion that a new contract would shut his mouth right up.

Yeah, I have seen Bugs and I know that "maroon" was a slick way of calling someone a moron.

Here is an article from the Cincy enquirer. This guy wrote a book with Chad, just another perspective:

Daugherty: Trade Chad
BY PAUL DAUGHERTY

The Road to T.O.Ville is clear now. All it took was one last, unfortunate gesture on the part of the Player Formerly Known as Chad. Chad Johnson blew up Carson Palmer Wednesday, same as Terrell Owens did to Donovan McNabb when both were in Philadelphia.

Johnson is following the Drew Rosenhaus, how-to-force-a-trade manual, right down to the last burnt bridge. All it’s costing him is the affection of an entire city.

I don’t know this New Chad. The Chad I knew cared about football and winning, to such an extent that his passion occasionally undermined his better judgment. The Chad I knew bought dinner for strangers at local restaurants and showed up to sign autographs at the annual awards dinner of the Hamilton County Special Olympics.

The Player Formerly Known as Chad played pickup basketball with UC players and once waited tables at the LaRosa’s on Boudinot, just for fun and as a sign he hadn’t forgotten what it was like to be mortal.

I knew that Chad, and liked him very much.

This New Chad, I haven’t a clue.

He used to take offense when people compared him to Owens, arguably the biggest self-centered jerk ever to put on pads. The only resemblance was the showmanship, Chad said. Now, the only resemblance is everything.

The Bengals gave Johnson three contracts in his first five years in the league. After the last one, a six-year deal worth $28 million, Rosenhaus the agent pronounced the deal “historic’’ and praised the team’s generosity. That was two years ago, almost to the day.

The Bengals didn’t have to shower Johnson with $10 million in upfront, good-faith bonus cash. They didn’t have to make him, at the time, the fourth-highest paid receiver in the league. They believed their loyalty and generosity would be rewarded with a career-long, productive stay in Cincinnati. Chad and Rosenhaus had other ideas.

It wasn’t enough to trash the organization that made him rich. It wasn’t enough to rip the coach who has tried to father-figure him. Marvin Lewis has been unable to control Chad Johnson, and it might prove the coach’s undoing. But Lewis deserves credit for making the attempt. And believe me, the attempt has been above and beyond.

It wasn’t enough to do all that. The Player Formerly Known as Chad lashed out at Palmer, after Palmer was, yet again, put in the awkward position of answering for his teammate. Johnson said several months ago only two people in the locker room “had his back.’’ Scratch one of the two off the list.

Johnson and Rosenhaus should get what they want, which is out. You don’t like it. I don’t like it. No one should profit from such overt spoon-banging. Children that get their way all the time remain children forever.

A deal is a deal, we say. Serve your time. The cap hit would be $8.03 million, whether Johnson is traded or released. The bonus money is already gone, but the money still must be accounted for, which means less money to spend on a player the Bengals really need.

So be it.

The team has to take the long view here. The Bengals can keep Johnson on the roster and retain the $8 million, and allow him to torpedo the team’s season. Or they can trade him, absorb the hit and consider it a lesson learned. Sticking it to Chad by not sending him elsewhere hurts the entire team.

If vindictiveness is your thing, trade him to the Oakland Raiders, who stink and don’t have a QB. See how Chad would feel playing at home in Miami, catching balls from the immortal John Beck. FUTURE H.O.F. 20?? would find the road to Canton a little rockier from either of those gulags.

It’s a damned shame. The Chad I knew announced the day he was drafted that he was happy to be a Bengal, and wanted to be known as a player who led Cincinnati’s renaissance. For awhile he was exactly that player, a sweet guy of immense ability who became a hero to lots of hero-starved fans around here.

Now, he’s traveling the road to T.O.-ville. He’s so far gone, we can’t see him anymore. We wouldn’t recognize him if we could.

Though it supports his arguement, I have to point out that yet another expert doesn't understand the salary cap. That hit can be spread out over two years, so the hit isn't going to hold up the deal.

Here's the fact of the matter. Keeping him or trading him both hurt the team. He won't fetch the kind of value he's worth, so the Bengals get screwed. Keeping him forces a bad apple to remain, so the Bengals get screwed. With those two things being somewhat equal, now would be a great time to send the message that they aren't going to allow this kind of move. Afterall, everyone is assuming that Johnson won't play. That's a terrible assumption and one I think is dead wrong. Anyone think Johnson will sit on the sideline? I sure don't. He loves himself too much.

I hope they continue to stick to their guns. I might just respect the organization a little bit if they do. If they don't, they'll continue to be the laughingstock that they've been for the better part of two decades.

Toad what happens if they don't budge and suspend him for the year. I know the bonus cap hit remains but how about salary. Can they suspend without pay.....Also there should be some way to control his slimball agent. Isn't he noted for pulling this crap..

I beg to differ.

Short of illegal activities, there isn't lot I wouldn't do for a 4 year 25 million dollar contract. I am sure I'd make do with any misery I may have to endure.

Exactly.... if there are things that you wouldn't do or put up with in the course of doing your chosen profession when you are getting paid $6.25 Million per year, you are one incredibly spoiled child that has completely lost sight of just how truly fortunate you are to be in the position you are spitting all over..

I vote for retaining the 8 million, not allowing him to get a new contract elsewhere, and sticking it to the entire team (and Chad and Rosenhaus). Screw the lesson learned. Chad and Rosenhaus can learn that.

No begging necesary...

Why is there a need for qualifying or exceptions?

It would be interesting to know what "there isn't a lot you wouldn't do for" means exactly... Your attitude is a little concerning, considering your handle here and backround... JMHO.

Bottom line is not a single one of knows, "what" for sure... Who are we to judge unless we take that walk in anothers shoes... ? And are we capable of doing so? Obviously not... Otherwise we would be...

As usuall we will agree to disagree on this...

I agree toad, even if it means letting him sit out the season, or just not activating him for games until he gets it together. Not only that, it sets a horrible precedent, and it's past due time someone gets screwed for listening to Rosenhaus. Giving in to Johnson now just encourages Rosenhaus to do this again, and next time it could be one of ours (See Winslow, Kellen).

The Bengals should announce that they're working on a deal with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. The NFL wouldn't allow it and Chad Johnson would get a healthy dose of embarrasement.

Nor,

I know enough about the cap to be dangerous. That means I know enough to talk about it, but with the qualifier that I'm likely to get a small detail wrong pretty often. So, with that being said.......

They can't suspend him for the year without a very serious infraction. The most likely scenario would be "conduct detrimental to the team" which would come in the form of calling Mike Brown exactly what he is (how ironic would THAT be? ). If memory serves me correctly, that's a four-game suspension, and 4/17th of his pay for the year. A quick glance says that's around three-quarters of a million bucks. THEN they could go after part of his signing bonus. I've forgotten exactly what happens if he keeps it up. There are rules in place for such things, but I just can't recall what happens after the first one. I've read it before, but it's escaping me right now.

So what happens if Johnson doesn't show up for mandatory team activities? He can be fined. If he doesn't show up for games, he loses 1/17th of his salary for each game, and his bonus money can be challenged. Now, in most standard contracts, a player can show up prior to week 10 and still get credit for that year, meaning they'd fulfilled one year of their contract, and can thus be one year closer to free agency. However, thanks to something I read on SportingNews, there's something in Johnson's contract that means he wouldn't be one year closer to his free agent year if he did that, so there's no incentive.

So, ultimately, Johnson would have to decide if he's willing to sit for a year and lose all that money, stats, and fame. It wouldn't put him any closer to free agency, and would only make him a year closer to the point where his skills would be on the decline. Sure, the Union could file greviences, but they wouldn't get past an arbitrator.

Well, I simply say this, let him miss workouts, OTA's, minicamp, training camp, preseason, the regular season, hell let him retire or get black listed from the league...LOL Without CJ, the Bengals are that much easier for us to beat.

How serious are the Cincinnati Bengals about not giving in to Chad Johnson's trade demands?

Johnson

Serious enough to swat away an offer from the Washington Redskins that could have netted the Bengals two first round draft picks, team and league sources said.

The Redskins offered this year's first round pick, No. 21 overall, and a conditional third rounder in 2009 that could escalate to a first rounder if Johnson and the Redskins hit certain performance levels, the sources said.

It was not the first time the Redskins approached the Bengals about a deal but it was the first significant proposal.

The Bengals have not only rejected the Redskins, but two other NFC East suitors -- the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles -- have been informed that there has been no change in the team's position that Johnson will not be traded.

The Bengals have noted to those suitors that Johnson has been the "second-highest paid receiver" in the NFL during the past three years, indignant about suggestions that Johnson also wants a new contract, the sources said.

Trading Johnson also would mean Cincinnati would take an $8 million salary cap hit, but that amount could be split over the next two years. Additionally, as one anonymous owner told ESPN.com, "There's nothing wrong with dead money. It's cash already paid and it's cash back in your pocket that you don't have to spend, especially with the [high] amount of everyone's salary cap these days."

Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.

Right on Cap. Do the Bengals really feel that they'll get Johnson to perform at a high level this season, and then they'll be able to get more out of him in a trade next year? Or are they just trying to prove a point?

I gotta say, I'm a bit confused by this,,,, If what was reported was accurate, meaning a 1st this year and a 3 rd next year that could slide up to a first next year,, then I have no idea why the Bengals wouldn't take that deal?

I mean, I could see passing on it if Johnson was a player that wasn't causing so many issues in Cincy.. And given that he's probably on the down side of his career at this point, I'm not 100% sure I pass on the deal even if he's a model citizen..

But Johnson seems like he's gonna cause nothing but problems AND he's nearing the end of his career.... Why not take the deal?

Does anyone think it's just the 8 million cap hit they will take? If so, that kinda seems short sighted to me.... But that's just my opinion.

It's a weird situation. Can this team, of all teams, afford to let principles get in the way of progress? If Chad is just going to sit and hold his breath til he turns blue like a spoiled 5 year old, wouldn't they be better off to just get him out of there? Is Chad so starved for attention that he'd do that, or will he come out and perform for his dedicated fans?

Oh well, not our problem.

Well, I disagree that he's on the downside of his career, but I'm with you Daman, I'm confused by this. I have to think it's because they stated their position and now they're sticking by it, to send a message. I guess?

I'm hoping that it is what it appears to be... that an NFL team (well, one that pretends to be) is actually sticking to its guns and not caving in to the spoiled brat demands of a player..

Maybe Cincinnati is just holding out looking for a better deal, knowing better deals come along the closer the draft gets,

I'd hold out until the morning of the draft or even tell Washington I'm looking for a player or two and if thier there when your pick is on the board we can talk, hold and get the best deal possible, 8 Mil cap hit dosent mean Washington can't turn that third round pick into a 5th and add 4 Mill to the deal to cover half the hit.

Wont suprise me to see hit delt the night before the draft or draft day...

I can see that point of it, but I'm wondering at what point you cut your losses. Yeah, you want to stick to your guns, but at the same time, are you going to get more than this in the future? What if Johnson sits out this whole year because he's mad. What has Cincy really accomplished (beside sticking to their guns)? I have to think CJ's trade value goes down then.

But, at the same time, you don't want other marquee players thinking if they just make a stink, they'll get out.

It's really kind of a lose/lose for the Bengals. Don't give in, but don't get anything back. Or, give in and risk all kinds of headaches down the road.

It is a Lose-Lose situation for this case, but it can be Lose-Lose with a Win down the road if they send the signal to other players that you are either going to have to honor your contract or sit out and get nothing.

The Bengals are making point, taking a stand...unfortunatley for them its the completely wrong player and situation to making their point. You can't keep someone there that doesn't want to be there, now I can see their point of not releasing him or giving him away. However when your offered a 1st, 3rd...that could possibly become a first...you are stupid.

Why not cut every criminal on your roster, or cut first offense players? Instead they're deciding their stand is gonna be KEEPING an angry, loud mouthed WR. This is gonna get ugly with a capital U.....the Bengals just don't know when to and when to not. They are just a poorly run franchise from Brown to Lewis.

I think Chad will play, but will cause all kind of problems in the locker room, and who knows what antics he'll pull on the field. Either way it ends badly for Cinci land.

I can just see it now, Cin in Cle, game tied, :35 left on the clock.

Palmer deep to Johnson, Johnson catches it, and wait, what is Johnson doing, he is handing the ball to Brandon McDonald of the Browns, and now Johnson is running along side McDonald as a blocker, and taking out his own teammates.

This is the Bengals...it's 100% money driven. That's why they waited a year to release Henry, it wasn't a financial boon for them yet. They know that they have Johnson by the balls, and are going to squeeze. They can afford the cap hit, but don't want to blow the money on this year's cap.

I really don't blame Chad Johnson. The Nasti is an absolutely horrid organization, and no one leaves with good things to say about Mike Brown. I feel bad for Johnson that this is not going to turn out well for him. He either plays in Cinci in 2008, or he rides the pine a la Terry Glenn his last year in New England.

And that celebration was funny. Plus, he got a beer bath for the others around them.

Well, I disagree that he's on the downside of his career, but I'm with you Daman, I'm confused by this. I have to think it's because they stated their position and now they're sticking by it, to send a message. I guess?

I guess I see your point about him NOT being on the downside of his career.. he certainly has a number of years of productivity for sure.. But without a Carson Palmer and that big arm of his, he may find it hard to be as productive somewhere else.

It's funny, I don't know how to feel about this. in one respect, having Johnson on the Bengals instantly makes them a better team... that kinda isn't in the best interest of the Browns.. On the other hand, having him on the Bengals might tear them apart to the point that they just end up sucking next season..

I really don't know which potential outcome I should be hoping for

Can this team, of all teams, afford to let principles get in the way of progress?

If that team decided to have principles, this isn't the right situation to start with.
