So they were having a discussion on the local sports radio station here about the Red Sox and A's having advertising on their uniforms. It's seen in NASCAR, Golf, Bowling, and more recently soccer... but do you think it would be accepted in the major sports like baseball, basketball, or football?
I recently went to buy a Houston Dynamo's jersey (soccer) and found out that they had been sponsered by an energy company... instead of "Dyanmos" being on the chest, the name of the company is now plastered on it... I refused to buy it... I'll be looking for an old Dynamo's jersey now because I don't want to be a billboard.
Just curious as to what everyone else's thoughts are.

European soccer clubs have been doing it for awhile now: My guess is, nobody is going to like the idea.

I'm Ok with Nascar, Golf, and Bowling doing it because those are more individual sports. But i don't like the idea of team sports like football, baseball, and basketball doing it because its to hard to tell who the players are, especially football, and if you add logos to their jerseys it will make it even harder to read the players name and numbers.

Well, my thoughts are if the health of the sport depends on it, then it's ok.
NASCAR's entire structure depends on sponsorship...and do you really think the Arena league and MLS could survive without sponsorships on their jerseys?

I don't think that i like the sponsorships. When I was england a few years ago i wanted to buy a arsenal jersey, but couldn't afford the 100 dollars it would cost with the exchange rate. Being a scientist i liked the sponsorship on the front. OF course i have no idea what the product was. Here is a picture of the original I would have proudly worn this jersey, but now they have a new sponsor. and I would not be caught dead in the new one. I guess I should have paid the premium, because the new jerseys are awful.

Thye make quite a bit of money from TV, merchandise sales and gate revenue. Does NASCAR really need all the sponsorships they get?

Maybe not now, but that wasn't the case 10 years ago, where they absolutely needed those sponsorships.
Now, sponsors on the side of the car are expected and is commonplace. I wouldn't expect a team to drop a sponsor and turn down extra pocket cash because they felt advertising wasn't needed on the side of the car.

Sellout.
That's all I have to say. The NFL rakes in billions, and I find it pretty lame if they would start doing it. It would ruin the uniforms and the tradition.
Hopefully, it never comes down to that.

very nice.
I guess that is what i deserve with the a stream of conscious post.
To clarify. I liked the O2 or symbol for oxygen on the front, but as a general rule they are distracting and I don't like them.

You can find these online if you do a little digging - just found one for $70US. By the way O2 is Telefonica O2 - a telecom company. Hope that didn't ruin it for ya.

A sponsorship for a NASCAR Sprint Cup car is $15-25 million a year in added revenue per race team ($30 million in Dale Jr.'s case).
I think NASCAR is the most dependent on sponsorship. You flat out could not compete without sponsorship.
See: Robert Yates Racing...once a premier power is now floundering in the rear because they have no full time sponsors on either of their cars.

I prefered the Highbury jerseys with the O2 better also. My son has the Maroon Highbury Farewell Kit also. Of course with Henry across the back Though I think I like it more than he does, he likes wearing his Celtic Football CLub Kit that my buddy had sent from Scotland for him.

Depends on the sport I guess.. I gotta believe that some sports require that revenue to survive. Football, Baseball and Basketball in this country do not need that revenue stream so I'd be against if for them.. Soccer, Arena football probably can't survive without it.. so there I can live with it.
Generally, for me, as long as it doesn't effect the big three sports, then I'm ok with it.

That's basically how I feel about it Ammo...
and in terms of MLS surviving... they've done alright so far I think.. and the Dynamo do very very well here in Houston... but I guess they want extra revenue... and as someone said the international teams have been doing it forever... so most of hte diehard soccer fans had no problems with it.

Depends on if it was done tastefully or not, There is advertising on NFL, MLB, and NBA jerseys, it's just not plastered. Granted it was who the team wanted to make their jerseys for them. But that little piece of logo still counts as advertising.
If by perchance the advertising on the jerseys were that small or blended well then yes I see no problem with advertising. But, I don't want to see the AT&T globe with text plastered on a Browns jersey.

The absolute only way I am okay with it is if it lowers ticket prices. As it is, I do not go to baseball games, I might go to one Browns game every two years, and I have gone to one Cavs game in the last 7 years. Why? Ticket prices are absurd, and would rather watch the game in my house on my nice tv. Season ticket holders are getting 'jacked as well as anybody else that pays face value for any tickets.
Logos are somewhat of a nuisance. Suppose John Smith had a bad experience with a certain company, then that company sponsors John Smith's favorite football team, John can no longer watch his favorite team play without being reminded of the bad experience he had with the sponsoring company. - That's why I don't want sponsorship on uniforms, unless of course, like I said, ticket prices get lowered.
