A new study reveals that women who wed men who are uglier than they will have a happier marriage than those with a more attractive mate.

In couples where the wife is the hotter one, both parties seem to be content, found a study of 82 newlywed duos in the Journal of Family Psychology.

"Both spouses tended to behave more positively when wives were more attractive than their husbands and more negatively when husbands were more attractive than their wives," said the study by UCLA's Benjamin Karney.

Karney also found that it doesn't matter how much better looking the wife is than the husband - just that there is a discrepancy.

From Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller to Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, beautiful women have been marrying less attractive men through the ages.

Consider Howard Stern and his fiancée, Beth Ostrosky; Christina Aguilera and her geeky husband, Jordan Bratman, or Sienna Miller's latest fling with homely actor Rhys Ifans.

According to the study, it is evolution that dictates that physical attractiveness of long-term mates is more important to men than to women.

Men are looking for a way to carry on their genes and see physical attractiveness as an indicator of strong genetics.

"Because physical attractiveness is less important to women, in contrast, relative attractiveness may only affect them through its effect on their husbands," the study says.

New Yorkers seem to agree.

Jesse Turcios, 32, thinks unattractive guys are an asset to their prettier counterparts.

"My boyfriend is not so good-looking and I feel secure. It's not nice to say, but it's true," said Turcios, a stunning former bar owner from the Bronx.

"He's a hardworking man who has a lot going for him."

Ashley Freeman, who is 20 and single, believes going ugly might be her best bet for finding a keeper.

"When a woman looks better in a relationship she feels like she has nothing to worry about," Freeman, who lives on Long Island, explained.

One explanation: Men are more motivated to hold on to a pretty wife.

"When women who are really beautiful go out with men who aren't so hot, the men try harder so it makes for a better marriage," says psychologist Cooper Lawrence.

"The women know that whatever goes wrong in the marriage, the husband is going to do whatever is necessary to keep it together."

Hey I resemble this artical...

In my own expirience, this tends to be true. My guy is very attractive to me, but maybe less than average by "society's rules".
I never thought about the psychology of it, but I do tend to be jealous... I guess it makes me feel safer. idk.

I personally think it stems from women being worry warts.

When they are the hot ones they think "Well, he can't do much better than this". So they are at ease?

Just my opinion

I think it's because uglier guys tend to be the smarter ones, and thus have more cash.

I believe you need personality to back it up. I see too many hot girls who think their looks give them an excuse to be bitchy or ditsy. That pisses me off. I personally think I'm the triple threat, so he would be hard pressed to find someone better than me.

Hmmm ... great point. Although, I think he uses some sort of mind control or hypnosis, because there's really no other explaination.

When I see guys like Lyle Lovett banging girls like Julia Roberts, I know there is hope for the rest of us LOL..

The reason they say this is b/c men are more likely to cheat in a marriage and if they are ugly most women feel more "secure" that another woman won't tempt him.

My wife gets real jealous anytime I go out b/c she thinks every woman I come across wants me. She seriously annoys me by calling me all the time I am out. It got to the point that I blew up on her and told her to leave me the hell alone. She did the same thing when she found out I talk to females on this board until she got to know some of the lady dawgs. It annoys the hell out of me.
When I first got hired at my company I got a million questions b/c I am the only guy in the part of the office where I work. I had to describe who was married, ages, etc lol.

I am so glad my woman trusts me.

I travel around the country allot and with past girlfriends when I would even mention talking to a woman (seminar, class, store visits) they would freak. In their defense I work with mostly hot thin women (VS). Still it was always so annoying, but I found a secure woman who doesn’t even flinch.

It is so nice not having to answer “Is she pretty?”, “Yeah, but they are all pretty.” Then having to explain that where I work it cannot be prevented. It was like running in circles. Now I don’t even have to answer ridiculous questions.

I just came back from store visits in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, and saw tons of hot VS girls. Not even a question.

Trust, confidence, whatever it is…it’s fabulous not to have to answer questions about who I talked to and if they were hot.

That's because she is too busy dating your friends while you are gone.

Don't forget how modest you are!

Very ture.....but ugliness is way to real for some....

C'mon Clay...that's "eye of the beholder" territory. Some people considered "pretty,hot,handsome" suffer from an ugly attitude because they think their looks grant them permission to treat those they consider "ugly" with derision and scorn. It's BS.

Makes sense to me.

The facts of life are men are more attracted by a womans look then are women to men.

Fast forward 20 years....it is easier or more natural for a man to have wanderlust then do women.....I don't know why, but it just seems to work out that way.

As a woman or man ages, they lose some of those looks.

So a woman with marginal looks to begin with becomes even less attractive.

Since looks isn't at the top of a womans wishlist to begin with, it is less of a problem for them as hubby puts on 20 lbs around the belly and starts clogging the tub drain with his hair.

I do see how this could be true though. Men do usually place more value on looks than women do. Though, I'd would guess that women place some value on looks, I mean, we do need to be attracted to the guy!

who are these women in the study? Nasty model types, or realistic looking women?

I,ve been told I'm hot, I've been told I'm too skinny, I've been told I aint all that....I don't care...I'd rather be told I am kind with a beautiful soul than be told I have a pretty face or a smoking bod any old day of the week. It's what's inside that counts.

I've seen some with alot of those big bones...

To me it's how a women handles herself, but there are others items which attract me to her also...

thats not a big enough sample size, and Newlyweds? cmon. Thats not nearly a big enough group or a diverse enough group. Its prolly true, but, I think this is a bogus study. newlyweds, let them be married for 20 years and see what has happened

The study was probably done by a bunch of nerdy looking single scientists too

If this is true, then I'm completely screwed.

BTW Many of you have met my wife, now you know why we have such a good marriage.
