Updated: Jan. 4, 2007, 9:05 PM ET Report: Raiders to fire ShellSportsTicker National Football League News Wire SUNNYVALE, California -- A decade later, Al Davis apparently will fire Art Shell again. Yahoo.com reported Thursday that Shell is expected to be fired as coach of the Oakland Raiders. According to the report, Shell could be dismissed as early as Thursday. The report said Shell and the club were negotiating a settlement on the final year of his contract. It would mark the second time Shell is fired by the club. The Pro Football Hall of Fame offensive lineman previously coached the team from 1989-94, compiling a 54-38 record, including three playoff appearances and a trip to the AFC championship game in January 1991. After he fired Shell following the 1994 season, Davis said it was a move he had always "regretted." "The guy that will lead us back, and we will be back, is Art Shell," Davis said when he re-hired Shell in February. But after replacing Norv Turner, Shell guided the Raiders to a league-worst 2-14 record this season. It was the franchise's worst record in the Davis era (1963-present). Oakland, which ended the season with a nine-game losing streak, owns the top pick in April's draft. In December, the Raiders denied a report by the NFL Network that said Shell would be fired. In four seasons since losing to Tampa Bay in Super Bowl XXXVII, the Raiders have gone a woeful 15-49, losing at least 11 games in each campaign. Once a proud franchise, the Raiders have become a laughingstock and an unpopular destination for many coaches because of Davis' involvement in the day-to-day operation of the team and the club's inability to discipline players. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=nfl&id=2720613

Art obviously likes a challenge. Maybe we could interest him in coaching our pitiful OL.

Why would you even bring him in, in the first place if you just going to axe him after a year?

This just says to me that Al Davis is running to much of the show in Oakland and the Raiders will never get out of the cellar until he gives some control to people who know what they are doing. Plus, he has to be patient with some of these coaches and players, maybe he should take lessons from us Browns fans, lol

web page Art Shell steps down as Raiders coach By JOSH DUBOW, AP Sports Writer 12 minutes ago ALAMEDA, Calif. - Art Shell's second stint as coach of the Raiders ended after just one season, the franchise's worst in more than four decades. Shell met with owner Al Davis on Thursday to discuss the future of the team following a 2-14 season that was the worst for Oakland since 1962. The team issued a statement after the meeting saying Shell would not return as coach for the final season of his contract "While Art will no longer serve as head coach, he and Mr. Davis have discussed and will continue to discuss opportunities for Art to remain a valued member of the Raider organization," the team said in a statement. Shell's departure was first reported by ESPN and Yahoo.com.

lots of folks like to say the browns are the laughing stock, nope.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

An interesting note, is that this means that Romeo will be given the opportunity to coach one side of the Senior Bowl. The jobs are always offered to the returning coaches in the AFC and NFC with the highest draft pick in next years draft. With Shell gone, that would leave Crennel in charge. If a high pick happens to go to the senior bowl (see two years ago with Cadillac Williams) it could be interesting to see if one of them impresses Crennel enough to shoot up to our pick.

I gotta say this,,,, The Raiders were indeed horrible last season,,,no question,, But they were horrible the year before that also..
NO coach,,,,can take pile of crap like that and turn it around in 1 year,,,, If Davis fires him now, then Davis needs replaced....

As critical I've been of Romeo, this is a completely different situation. The Raiders job was such a bad gig last year that NO ONE wanted it. This year the Raiders were perhaps the biggest trainwreck I've ever seen. This is even worse than an expansion team because the team is loaded with high salary and veteran talent. How bad is it? The NFL is actually concerned about the Raiders ability to compete in the coming years (I wish the NFL was more concerned about us...). Yes, it's WAY worse than we are or ever were. The question is, who's gonna want it this year?

The question is, who's gonna want it this year? How about Dennis Green? Had a passing, deep ball, offense in MN and coached Moss previously. Seems to be a players coach. Just a thought.

Doubt it, I don't think he wants to go from one grim situation to another. The Raiders are the biggest trainwreck I've ever seen. Their cap is in bad shape, they're not a young team, etc. etc. This is 10 times worse than our situation after the '04 season.

lots of folks like to say the browns are the laughing stock, nope. Even though we did indeed stink on ice this year, nobody really was laughing. That should tell everyone something. Injuries, lack of depth, being in the second year of a total rebuild, it's a wonder we managed to even stay in many of the games. I've seen teams melt down and this one didn't really do that even though it probably should have. We are a bad football team, the Raiders are a total disaster. J.
