Was just looking through cnnsi.com today and came across this. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/dr_z/01/04/all.pros/index.htmland look who he picks for his SS STRONG SAFETY (Sean Jones) I'm not even going to name the six guys I looked at. I'm only going to mention one because he came on stronger than any DB in my dossier. He was, in other words, brilliant. I'm talking about Sean Jones, a three-year veteran and first-year starter for the Browns. In the first loss to Baltimore they threw into his coverage five times and completed one for 12 yards. He knocked down three passes, in addition to coming up to the line when needed and plugging. In the victory over the Raiders they threw at him four times, completed zero. He knocked down one and made four good stiff tackles near the line. I did not chart many Cleveland games after that. I saw them recreationally a few times. I was constantly aware of this young guy making plays. I called up their DB coach, Mel Tucker. How good is Sean Jones? "Absolutely great," he said. I called up Todd Grantham, their defensive coordinator. Who's the best player on your defense? "Oh, Sean Jones, that's an easy one." My great joy as an all-pro picker is finding someone a year or two before he's discovered. I've found one. Great to see Jones get some recognition for a very good season. Hopefully an improved d-line and a better pass rush will only make Jones' numbers go up. Should be interesting to see how this kid developes over the next two years. At least the Butcher gave us a couple guys in Winslow and Jones to build around. It was about damn time.

I will always remember that youtube clip of Jones trucking Gallery then making the tackle. My favorite play of the year, right up there with Winslow stiffarming Porter.

This guy acts as if he "discovered" SJ, heck, we've all discussed how he's improved. I know I posted a Dispatch article "On the emergenceof Sean Jones" and we discussed that then. IMO.. The Browns aren't a "big" news team and our good players get overlooked. When we start winning that will change.

I thought the quote, that I quoted summed it well....he isn't "discovered" or he would have made the pro bowl this year, and the Browns are 2-3 years away. ( and sean joens from being discovered) people don't wantch Browns game..and I don't blame the...When they start watching, the stars will get their recognition, but they won't watch, if we don't win. ya know,,,it's funny that this guy writes this article now... Like someone else already mentioned,,, we fans of the Browns already figured it out a while ago that we have a very solid young Safety that appears to be getting better and better...
But recognition,,,, even coming late, is better than not at all,,,, Thanks for the read...

hell yeah! that's my guy! I can't wait to see him one more year under the current D and also I think next year he will make the PRO BOWL b/c people are going to be looking for him... and no one was really *looking* for him specifically this year. JMHO

I remember when most of us wanted Brodney Pool to start over Jones. We are were like "I sure hope Romeo knows what he is doing!" I am very glad that Romeo didn't listen to most of the fans wanting Brodney starting over him. I like Brodney but clearly Sean Jones is gonna be a star on our team at SS.

just kinda goes to show that if we all really knew as much as we thought, we'd have jobs in the NFL too
I trust Romeo...for one more year at least, lol

I'm glad he chose Sean Jones. But I do not like his explanation. I got my SI yesterday and saw that Jones was selected. Then when I read the article this Dr. Z guy listed very compelling reasons for every player. He made an in depth analysis of every player and why he chose them. Then with Sean Jones, he said hardly anything. Here is his explanation:
"Using my complex process of grading players, Sean Jones had the best season of any defensive back."
Okaaay! Now, mind explaining to the rest of the NFL, the ones that don't follow the Browns just what kind of season Jones had? Nope.

Jones is a very solid strong safety that will be more productive every year as we continue to build a Crennel type of defense!
The team will start to get more wins next season..............and people will start to notice...then we will have players in the Pro Bowl such as Winslow, Wimbley, Jones, and maybe others!
This team is going to get much better...............and Jones will be a big part of it.........let's all hope that he can stay healty with all the bad luck this team has suffered from injury!

I remember when most of us wanted Brodney Pool to start over Jones. Yeah most I knew he was going to be a beast. Some of us envisioned Jones at SS and Pool at FS. Which Pool will gradually take time away from Russell this year then next probably be full time if not some time this year. Once we get some slobs up front Pool and Jones are going to be one scary combo.

can you imagine if everyone is right about pool next year? strong possibility of it happening. Nice that Sean had his coming-out party this year. Brodney is a year greener on the squad, but still made some good contribution. Let's also remember that he entered the League after his Junior year, so his "learning curve" probably required more from him. Even so, his level of play is right about where Sean's was after the same length of time. If it clicks for him next year, look out! Until this team is solid from top to bottom, the only way for me to stay sane is to watch individual players... their weekly level of play, their development, etc. These 2 gave me some real pleasurable moments this year. I expect next year to be even better for both.

I think Pool is going to be a really good player as he matures. He is very talented. I think playing with Jones over the years is going to make him better and better. I hope he pans out as good as Jones. I didn't know much about him when we picked him in the 2nd round a few years ago then he got hurt. I am really happy to have him.

But recognition,,,, even coming late, is better than not at all,,,, Alright, I know you all love to bash the media, .....like when they predicted us to finish last in our division and so many were so upset and angry at the injustice of it all. But seriously, when was he supposed to write the article? I always thought it was customary to pick your All-Pro teams after the season. Not to mention that Jones never started before. Kinda hard to make him an All Pro when he isn't even starting. One more thing. I am not buying the fans knowing that Jones was a great player. In fact, I remember before the year having arguments w/people who kept saying that Pool was way better than Jones. The people on the Pool side of the fence FAR outnumbered the Jones camp. There were only a few of us. Regardless of all that, it is nice to see Jones getting some recognition. He had one heck of a year. He is always around the ball. He has incredible ball instincts and is a willing hitter. Pool is the opposite. I've never seen a player watch so much. He should be given a camera. I bet he could get some good action shots of Jones. I do think Jones wore down late in the season, but I imagine that is due to the fact that he was involved in almost every defensive play. We gotta improve the D-line.

i know Jones can lay that wood... but can Pool??? Thats one reason I like Russell cuz he will hit you hard after a catch (ie Chad Johnson). Russell hits guys so hard even his own teammates get scared (ie Braylon) LMAO!!
