Looked into the mirror this morning and my dad was looking back at me. No, it was me but when did the years mount up like that?
I've been married for 35 years to the same lovely gal who is now 54....aren't I too young to have such an older wife??? No I just realized I am 58 myself.

My kids are grown and out of the house...I have grandkids which I see often...one I see each day...life is good. Except, why do these damn hairs grow out of my ears, my nose...they didn't before did they? And why do I lose hair on my scalp but not on my face and neck??? AFU!

I left Florida to visit my old home in Erie, Pa. a few months back and decided to visit my families' gravesites. It took hours to get to everyone and they were all in the same cemetary.

As I walked along I realized that I knew and remembered a lot of other people buried in there also. Why is it that I know so many more people in the ground there than I do above the ground these days?

I'm 32, and the hair gremlin has finally found my house....I'm not that upset about it, I'm still one stunningly handsome man...just with shorter hair now!

Fifty eight isn't very old, Ralphie. My dad is in his seventies and still very active and vibrant. Sounds like you have a very nice life. So get some clippers, trim your damn nose and ear hairs, shave your head because women find that sexy, be glad you are one above the earth and not buried in it, and have some more fun!

I couldn't have said it better myself.

My hair is thinning, I cut it short and keep stepping...I look good regardless...of course, I'm not 58 either!

Great advice, but I know where Ralphie was coming from. Just checking in with the reality that is life. Not really questioning it but more just thinking about the journey.

Ralphie, if it's any consellation, I started losing my hair in my early 20s and by 25 years old was shaving it every day. I'm 33 years old now and haven't had hair in 8 years. Fortunately, I've got a good shaped head and the most handsome face...and the combination of the two makes women go beserk ... .

It's good to reflect though. Reflect on the journey, on old memories. Just always be grateful for watch you got and live life to the fullest every day.

It isn't the loss of hair on my head that bothers me so much, it is the balding legs that bother me.

Funny you said looking at your father.

I walk just like my dad...sometimes when walking into a mall or somewhere I can catch a reflection out of a window, it is as if my dad is walking towards me.

I started shaving my head in the Navy and grew it very long when I got out,,only to shave it again right before I went to Akron U. Now I still shave it every other day. Gillette fusion power rules! But the hair is deff. going bye bye on it's own. It sucks cause I am only 30 but whatever.

Ah, it's life. I'm 39 and have similar thoughts. My hair is still as thick as it was when I was 20, but I keep it about an 1/8 of an inch.

Speaking of looking at your father - when my grandpa was alive (just last year) I took my daughter to the home to see him in her Halloween costume, took a picture of her and him.

When my wife was browsing through the pictures later she said "when did you go see your dad?". I looked at the picture and it took me about 3 minutes till I realized it wasn't my dad, it was my grandpa - that's how similar they look. Why do I say that? Cause people say my face is exactly like my dads. I know what I'll look like when I'm 60, or even 88 years old! That's scary.

Turned 50 last August... the age number thing never bothered me since I've always been immature . I still have all my hair, only a couple are grey, you can't even notice. I've been asked if I dye it... I do not. When it goes grey, it goes grey, so be it. A girl at the Browns bar this past season was flabbergasted when I told her my age, she said she thought I was her age, 35. She's quite attractive and that was a bit of an ego boost but I don't really care about my physical looks in that sense. Some people find me attractive, some don't, it's always been that way. My wife still loves me, that's all that matters. What bothers me most about aging is the fact that my body is deteriorating. Both shoulders, right elbow joint and my achilles tendons makes some days really difficult to enjoy and these things really cut down on my activity and physical abilities. To me, that sucks most of all. Having said that, I enjoy life more now than I ever have, mainly because of understanding and appreciation. I'm able to live in the moment like I was never able to do before and that gives me joy like never before. I love my family and my friends more now than I did when I was younger, more self-centered and selfish. I even like and appreciate all the different personalities on this board more than I have in the past...lol. In general, I'm more comfortable in my skin. It took me well into my 40s to feel that way. Getting old isn't all bad, I enjoy life for the gift that it is, and I'm looking forward to going home some day. Getting oder isn't a curse, Ralphie. It's what we do and it allows us to grow into ourselves. I'll bet there are many in your life who truly appreciate the person you've grown into, so what's a few less hairs on your head or a few more in your ears when you have that?

The one thing I noticed about growing older, I'm 38, is that it hurts alot more when you fall.

Other than that, I still think/act like I'm in my late-20's. I've had grey hair on the sides for along time, but it didn't really show when I had long hair, as soon as I cut it all off, it became obvious.

Don't you just hate it when your legs are bald half way down your calves, and hairy as hell above that

I'll be 41 in a couple weeks, but I think like I'm 22 and sometimes act it. I still turn the stereo up LOUD and still daydream.
Hope it continues.

Ralphie it might pain you to know that I have the same thick shiny hair I did as a teenager (although it's greyer than many 40-year-olds... guess I can't have it all, hahaha).

More serious note, I sometimes feel glum about the passing years, but I try not to dwell on it too much because there's not much we can do about stopping the clock.

I was told that was from dry skin and your legs rubbing against your pants. It seems to be true b/c this doesn't happen to me in the summer time.

LOL! Facially i'm almost an exact duplicate of my dad, we look so much alike that i've had relatives who haven't seen us for a long time come up to me thinking i was him even though he's 67 i'm 41 and people say i look like i'm thirty. Still got all my hair too and hardly any gray.

You people seem to have positive out looks on aging. I wish I had that out look. I have never liked getting older, I was ticked to turn 20 and am now 29. I know alot of you will think I'm nuts, for getting depressed about my age, but I do. I still have all my athletic ability and little soreness after a football or baseball game, but I know it wont last forever and will probably hit me like a brick. I guess my fear is that I may look back one day and feel I haven't lived to the fullest. Right now I work for the man in a field that I do not prefer. I want my own business but don't have the rocks to take the risk. I see how fast the years have been seeming to go by.

Keep in shape and you can play sports well into you 60's.

I had uncles that played fast pitch softball into their late 50's, in fact one played into his 60's and would continue to play but he suffered an accident that affected his mobility.

I sometimes reflect on the carefree feeling and fun of my 20's, but I also look at my life now, and my success and financial freedoms. If I could mate the 2 I'd be in fantasy land.

But I am enjoying life just as much, just in a different way. My wife and I take vacations every year now, and try to go to new places. This year we are taking a 12 day cruise in the Mediterranean plus 2 extra days in Rome. Normally they are 4-5 day trips somewhere, this one is a little more extreme.

Life is what you make it, and if you wallow in the loss of the past, you will miss so much in the present and future.

I understand Ralphies post. Years ago driving the wife beserk had a lot different meaning than it does now. If I drive her beserk today it usually requires duck and cover technics followed by a very silent day or two.

Yup getting old really stinks. It seems like just yesterday it seems like I wasn't allowed to ride a moped. But in reality it was 5 months ago. Before I know it I will be bald.

The alternative to getting older isn't really that great of an option.

Turning 30 really bothered me. I'm now 39 and and looking forward to 40. It won't bother me in the least - in fact, I'll be happy that I made it (if I do, that is - still have 7 months to go).

I'd rather age another year than not.

I appreciate the responses and advice from all of you.

Losing hair is of no real concern to me...but the realization of family loses and friends departures are tough for me to take.

My family is great and I never deserved the wonderful wife I have been blessed with for these many years.

My advice would be this to any of you with family who made a difference in your early development... take the time to drive to their home and thank them for the time that they spent with you. Uncles and Aunts play a major role in most of our lives and often we never realize it until it is too late.

Your best friends Mom or Dad may have directed you positively also without even them realizing it ...so include them if possible.

Then return the favor to family and friends youngsters ...you never know how your interaction with them will pay off for the kids. Thanks for listening.
