Bengals release Henry
April 3, 2008

Posted: 11:30 a.m.
The Bengals today waived WR Chris Henry.

Bengals president Mike Brown issued the following statement:

"Chris Henry has forfeited his opportunity to pursue a career with the Bengals. His conduct can no longer be tolerated.

"The Bengals tried for an extended period of time to support Chris and his potentially bright career. We had hoped to guide him toward an appropriate standard of personal responsibility that this community would support and that would allow him to play in the NFL. We acknowledge those fans who had concerns about Chris; at the same time we tried to help a young man.

"But those efforts end today, as we move on with what is best for our team."

The Bengals on Thursday also waived punter Danny Baugher, who was originally signed on February 5

Good for them...

Now if they can gracefully handle the Ocho situation, maybe theyll take a step towards a respectable FO.

Awww come on, they couldn't give him one more chance?

What an IDIOT. Not that everyone didn't know that already, but wouldn't you FINALLY shape up if you had super talent and a disgruntled #1 receiver on your team that might take a hike soon?

Please every other NFL team. Just say no to this waste and lets see where his future lies . . .

Took them long enough.

I'm sure Jerry Jones will be calling soon.

And the wheel keeps on turning. Can anyone say 'trainwreck'? Hmmm, wonder where they'll go in the draft.

there's gotta be something more...I mean the guy did everything wrong you could possibly do and even got suspended for the first 8 games last year, yet they kept him on board. Now, when CJ and Housh are threatening to hold out, they cut him? Any sane team would have cut him last summer or tried to pry a late draft pick out of another team now (see: Jones, Pacman).

oh wait, sorry, I forgot this is the Bengals.

If they actually stayed put and went WR in the first round because of this, I'd be cheering and laughing my butt right off the couch.

Nobody would trade for this guy right now. I'd be confident in saying that not even a single GM in this league would be that dumb.

I wouldn't be surprised if Goodell gives him an indefinite suspension like he did with Vick. 1 year minimum anyway. And that's ontop of possible jailtime stemming from this and all the probation he is on everywhere. So yeah, basically Chris Henry is an idiot.

And the Bengals FO finally makes a respectable decision... weird...

I think the Cowboys need a #2 WR to take heat off of TO. Can you imagine that locker room... TO, PacMan, Chris Henry?? Maybe they'll trade one of their first-rounders for Ocho Cinco while they're at it.

Just clicking.

Here's a video of what went down at his last judicial proceeding. This isn't intended as smack, and please delete it if it is, but this is an inside look to see how he's been confronted by the judiciary and still had done little to change:

Mort had said that last draftthey actually didn't place players on their board because of character issues. What was even more suprising is when some dropped to the second day they left them off. I don't know who he was talking about, but I think it was about time. They have gone with the risk/reward philosphy for a long time and it has really burned them.

Bengals cut Henry, say they'll no longer tolerate his conduct

Bengals Release Chris HenryCINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Bengals decided Thursday they've had enough of Chris Henry's legal problems, cutting the wide receiver after his fifth arrest since 2005.

An attorney for Henry, 24, entered not guilty pleas for him after Henry was accused of punching an 18-year-old man in the face and breaking his car window with a beer bottle.

Municipal Court Judge Bernie Bouchard set bond at $51,000 on charges of misdemeanor assault and criminal damaging. Noting Henry's previous arrests involving drugs, guns and alcohol, the judge called Henry "a one-man crime wave." He ordered electronic monitoring if Henry makes bail.

Henry did not speak at the hearing, and attorney Perry Ancona declined to discuss the case after court.

Bengals president Mike Brown said in a statement Thursday that Henry had forfeited his career with the club.

ESPN Radio: Johnson Reacts
Chad Johnson discussed his rift with the Bengals, his contract status and his surprise at the release of Chris Henry with Max Kellerman and Brian Kenny on 1050 ESPN Radio in New York. Listen
"His conduct can no longer be tolerated," Brown said.

Henry was suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the first half of last season for repeatedly violating the league's conduct policy. He was also suspended for two games in 2006.

"The Bengals tried for an extended period of time to support Chris and his potentially bright career," Brown said. "We had hoped to guide him toward an appropriate standard of personal responsibility that this community would support and that would allow him to play in the NFL. ... But those efforts end today, as we move on with what is best for our team."

The player's agent, Marvin Frazier, said Thursday he did not know enough about the charges to comment.

"I just want to say that we're sorry this all happened, and we will continue to try to work to help Chris," Frazier said. "I do want to thank the Cincinnati Bengals -- Mike Brown, [coach] Marvin Lewis and everyone -- for all they have done to try to help this young man. Many of them have gone beyond the call of duty."

According to a statement filed with Hamilton County authorities, Henry was identified by Gregory Meyer, whose hometown was not listed, and an eyewitness. They claimed Henry punched Meyer on Monday, causing "visible injury." Henry then threw a beer bottle at Meyer's car, breaking the rear passenger window, according to the affidavit.

Walker: Chad Is Priority No. 1

Cutting third receiver Chris Henry after his latest arrest makes this much clear for the Bengals: Making Chad Johnson a happy camper is an even greater priority, writes James Walker. Story

Henry has had a string of problems with police. He was in court last week after being ticketed for driving with expired Kentucky license plates. He paid $149 in fines and court costs, according to the Hamilton County Municipal Court records.

Henry was arrested four times between December 2005 and June 2006. He was accused of possession of marijuana in northern Kentucky, carrying a concealed weapon in Florida, drunken driving in Ohio and providing alcohol to minors in northern Kentucky. In that case, he served two days in jail in 2006 after pleading guilty to a charge of letting minors drink alcohol in a hotel room he had rented.

Following his NFL suspension, Henry caught 21 passes for 343 yards and two touchdowns last season.

Henry had nine touchdown catches in 13 games in 2006, when he was suspended by the league for two games and benched for another by Lewis because of misconduct.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound receiver was a third-round draft pick from West Virginia in 2005.

Disgruntled star receiver Chad Johnson was stunned when told of Henry's release.

"Are you sure? Man, they can't let him go. That dude is good. He's very, very good," Johnson said on 1050 ESPN New York.

Wow, guess you can color this guy's career as over. Liked him as a receiver but man, he's got no class at all.

Henry has to be the dumbest player in the NFL. He has all the talent in the world but constantly decides to get in trouble. And that's what it is he DECIDES to get into trouble. I mean what was going through his head when he punched a guy and then threw a beer bottle through his window.

Am I the only person that wishes Henry would've gotten his tail beat? It would've been great if henry had done this, and this Greg Meyer guy said "oh no you don't" and beat him down, and THEN had the bengals cut him.

Maybe I just don't like henry or the bangles.

This is rather sad. How hard is it to take a step back and stop yourself? He will probably resurface in one of the other football leagues (AFL, AAFL, UFL, NIFL, etc.) So much talent is wasted.

I wouldn't have liked it if he'd have gotten beaten up.

I don't want him to be able to play the victim card

Good riddance. If you're so ungrateful for the PRIVILEGE to play in the NFL that you can't stay out of trouble for one season let alone your whole career, then you don't deserve to be in the league.

LOL at the judge. He sounded like he had money on the Bengals that year.

Henry is an ass. I have no sympathy for him.

Yeah PDawg, you're right. E. Wright was one of those guys.

It's not about whether or not a guy has been in trouble. The entire situation as a whole has to be evaluated along with the individual. The Bengals do none of that, and instead of spending more time researching why a player may have been a problem, they make a carte blanche decision to just not draft any players at all that have had some kind of trouble.

That's not the solution either. Life just doesn't work that way. But I guess if they don't have the resources to put in the time and really evaluate these guys, then making a absolute decision like that may have been in their best interest.

We did our homework on E.Wright, and it seems to have worked out pretty well.

NFL | Henry released from jail Friday
Fri, 4 Apr 2008 11:55:04 -0700

Terry Kinney, of The Associated Press, reports former Cincinnati Bengals WR Chris Henry spent an extra night in jail because no one was available to put a court-ordered monitoring device on him while he was under house arrest. Henry was released Friday, April 4, after posting $51,000 bond Thursday, April 3.

The Bengals had to release him. One of the conditions for his release was that he could not be near any felons. That means he could not be in the Bengals locker room or huddle.
