It rained yesterday.

I can play often enough that I don't fool with it if the weather is poor.

I'm sick as hell. I wish I golfed today. I barely could get out of bed.

Hopefully I'll get out one of these weekends.

I didn't play, but I gotta say this.

I took up golf late in life. I thought it was a sissy sport for years. I started playing when I was 29. I got pretty good. As always, I became very competitive about it. In the summers, I would hit between 500 to 750 balls a day....5 times a week. I got down to a 1 handicap. I could hit it a mile. Crazy thing is .....as I got better hitting the ball, my putting got worse.

Well...........my kids got into high school and both were playing on traveling teams. My daughter in softball and my son in baseball. Both played basketball too, so that was more summer games. And my son played football, so that was more time. I decided that I should quit golfing and pour myself into them. I even quit coaching. I watched everything they did.

I haven't golfed in years. But, now they are in college. I have time. I am not coaching or scouting. But, I have to confess..........I am a little afraid to start again. I know I will be terrible and I also know that my range of motion isn't what it was. I'm having a lot of knee, hip, and shoulder pain. I want to play again, but man.........I know how I am. I don't like not excelling.

I feel ya man. I was off Wed and Thursday was a nasty stomach flu and now both kids and my wife have it. Put it this way both kids have gone thru 2 packs of diapers in 2 days
Hope your feeling better.

As for Golf I havent swung a club in 5 years I just pulled my bag out of the closet the other day and am going to try the driving range and see how my back responds.

I'm feeling a little better as the day has gone on, but much better than last night. Last night, I felt like I got hit by a truck. The baby has been sick as well since last week, and she doesn't seem to be getting better. Doesn't want to drink anything and is sleeping a lot. Might call the doctor again tomorrow.

Been a few years since I last golfed, I'm dying to do it again.

I have no clue why I haven't taken advantage of the golf course here yet.

I golfed all weekend.

I organised a Tournament and a stopover in the town of Barham, just over the border in New Sth Wales. 13 of us attended in all, Sat night was messy Sunday morning at 8:30am tee off on the second days play there were some green faces on the 1st.

For the record, the first 18 i hit 120 ish. The front 9 was very hard and i was 65 (i think) with a more respectable 54 on the back 9.)

We then played 9 again and i went for 60+. (Didn't get to grips with my short game which is usually pretty good. Was getting to par 5 holes in 3 and walking off with 8's and 9's )

Yesterday we played another 18 and i shot 119 for the round. A little disappointed with form as i've been in good nick this year playing most weekends since Xmas but it was a tough course.

(For those of you who got me on Facebook, i've uploaded an album of this trip. )

I would hit between 500 to 750 balls a day....5 times a week.

Jesus, did you stop to eat? Can we say obsessive/compulsive? If I hit that many balls in a week my shoulders would explode.

I'd say get back in the saddle. Golf is fun no matter what your level of play is. Trust me on that.

You still can if you put things in perspective.

In my 30's I carried a real solid 4 handicap....pushing a 3.

Last fall when I started playing regularly again, I managed to push it down to 9 after a decade long layoff (I still played once in a while).

I suspect I can get it down a few more strokes this year...and that will probably be the limit for me.

The key is you understand your new limitations. As the body changes, your approach has to change. I can't reach most of the par 5's in 2 anymore....so why even bother with a driver when a 3 wood is money?? It doesn't bother me much to be hitting my 3rd from 80 yards v being up around the green...I can still make a par or occasional bird.

Really, throttle back. Practice up and down from 100 yards in....I am sure you remember playing that 80 year old guy when you were just starting out who somehow always seemed to manage a par and kicked your butt even though you were clubbing the ball 90 yards past him with the drive. Strive to be that guy.

The days of shooting a few strokes over par and sometimes under par at just about any course I played are over ...but I fully expect to be able to shoot in the 70's for the next 20 years, with the good days getting close to par and the bad days keeping it under 85 .

You can't measure excellence in sport against the standards you had when you were 30.

It just doesn't work that way.

I don't play much anymore, golf takes too much time. The courses around here won't open for another couple of weeks, at least, although driving ranges are opening soon.

The best golf advice I ever got was "put the driver away".
When I do play, it's 3-wood off the tee - I love staying out of the woods and you don't lose much distance..

I can only hit it around 210 or 220, but very consistent. If you keep slicing a driver into the woods or into crap... what do you think you should do?

Yes, everytime I fail to break 140, I always assume it's my putting..

I'm sorry OnB, just funnin' with ya. Likewise, I am very patient on the golf course, because it's supposed to be fun, but if I played behind somebody who shot 144 and likely took 6 hours to do it, I might not have been so nice either.... If you were playing quickly and/or letting people play through, then there was no need for anybody to be rude.

144 isn't just putting.

That is a bunch of 10 yard chili dips.

Sorry.....playing behind 144 would irk me too.

You shouldn't even go to a course if that is the best you can do. Go to the range.

Really...that is 8 shots a hole...which means there were probably some 10's and 12's in there.

Even letting people play through jams the course. You basically can let one group through every hole and a half.

To me, that is rude behavior.

Our course Marshall would have excused the group from the course with a refund.

So what you are saying is...This is your 1st. time golfing, you have never been on a course, And you are nereves, You shouldnt go? Because you are no good?....How do you become good, if you are not allowed on the golf course with other amatures? I for one feel that is wrong, and if all golfer's are like that, I will never againg step foot on a course.

I wish some of the course marshall's at my local courses would have the balls to do that. There is one that I've seen do it, and I do play that one more often. There is absolutely NO reason a round of golf should take more than 4 hours and 30 minutes; and that is a long round to me.

If I'm by myself in a cart, I can easily play 18 in 3 hours with no holdups - some courses can even be walked in 3 hours depending upon the landscape and distances between holes. Before I had my son, I had the first tee time 3 days per week; I could basically get there when the sun came up and I'd be off the course by 9 or 9:30 after playing 18.

You learn to hit it before you head out Sunday afternoon and bodger up a course.

I don't know if that is the feeling of all golfers, but I would say it is of most.

I don't care if you ever golf again or not.

It's like learning to drive. You go monkey around in a parking lot a while before you hit the interstate.

Your first time (and second, and third, and fourth, etc) golfing should be at the range, not at the course. Getting some lessons is also a good idea. At least get comfortable with hitting the ball in a practice environment before the real thing IMO. You don't have to be good to play fast - my mom shoots in the mid 50's to low 60's, but moves around the course just about as fast as I do. My dad taught us to play ready golf; I can't stand waiting around on the golf course for people who should not be there.

The problem with a lot of these types as well is that they play from tee boxes that they should not even attempt to play from. I'll play from just about any box, but the tips are a bit long for me. I can do it, but it isn't all that enjoyable. I paired up with a group last year that was playing from the tips - 7300 yards - all had 3K in equipment, dressed in $300 outfits. I was kinda nervous, but then I watch them tee off, LOL. Not one of them hit it past 200 yards. I politely told them I was going to play the next tee box up (6600 yards) and told them they might want to as well. They didn't want to, to each his own I guess

The only way to get better is to go out often. I don't get out much. The only days I can go is the weekends, and a lot of times I have stuff to do, which is why I never get any better. Back in college, I used to go out maybe once a week or so, and played a lot better then compared to now.

I understand what you are saying, but if you have a bad outing, should the people behind you treat you like crap?
Just asking, because when I golfed, and not that much by the way, because of how people acted,When it took me 3 or 4 shot's on the green, and they tell me to let them play thru, Is it my fault? To tell you the truth!, I really loved golf when I 1st. picked it up, But it was the other's that turned me away!
And I wasent a bad player, I think my highest score was in the 120's 130's... my best was 95.

There are learner courses...if you are holding up the process, you aren't at one of them. Try a par 3 course. Those are usually full of old men women with their grandkids...teaching them to play.

That makes for a nice 4 hour 9.

The day of the week is another trick...don't head out on the weekend...play 9 after 5pm someplace on a Tuesday.

You could use a croquette mallet and beat 144, and at minimum keep moving forward rather than at some 45 degree angle from where you intended to hit.

O&B...I love ya though....don't take it too personal.

If i could, I would give you lessons...4 hours I would have you scoring less than 100.....unless you are a total clutz...then I would give it up and buy you a bowling ball.

lol. You'd have to understand the culture. I don't mind players who go slow because they're not very good (I was one of those once, like everyone), but they need to let faster players play through. It's an important rule of etiquette.

I think casual golfers like myself are fine, but there's those kinds of golfers who take it very seriously. I usually don't enjoy playing with them as much. Now, I don't screw off when I golf or hold people up by any means, but I try to have fun out there and not take myself so seriously.

Yes. You are the one hitting the ball.

At some point you just pick up and move on...obviously at that point, score is less important than practice.

You can take 300 putts on the practice green and nobody will care.

I don't know why they are rude with you.

I do know getting behind a really slow group 2-3 holes ahead can ruin the day due to really slow play. The only person swinging the club on a regular basis is the person holding up the show.

To me it is like going to the grocery store and the person in front of you wants to pay the $50 tab by counting out pennies and nickels.
