http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/04/brother_shoots_11yearold_siste.html

An 11-year-old girl accidentally shot by her younger brother died today.

Police were called about 11 p.m. Tuesday to a house in the 2900 block of East 121st Street in Cleveland.

The 10-year-old boy had been looking for school clothes in a closet and found a .22-caliber revolver. He took it out of the closet and asked his 14-year-old brother, "What's this?" according to police spokesman Lt. Thomas Stacho.

Then the gun went off, hitting the 11-year-old girl.

Detectives said the 14-year-old brother had put the gun in the closet. He told police that he found the revolver and a rifle behind an abandoned house near East 118th Street and Buckeye Road.

Police took both guns for testing.

Both parents and their six children were home at the time of the shooting.

The 14-year-old was arrested and charged with felonious assault. He is being held at the Cuyahoga County Detention Center. The 10-year-old likely will not face charges, Stacho said.

Not to sure about arresting and charging the 14 y.o? This poor family is dealing enough right now, couldn't they at least have done "charges pending investigation"?

Can somebody post a happy story? Man, nothing but stories of kids dying or getting beat lately.

Unless there's more to the story I can't imagine anyone convicting a 14 y/o of that though... very unfortunate... very stupid on the part of the 14 y/o, but no good comes from arresting him.

Yea, I don't know the kids story, but it seems like they could take a kid who made a very kid-like mistake and now is not only going to have to live with the fact that he is responsible for the death of his sister, but a criminal record too? I don't get it.

No doubt. I'm starting to get the feeling I'll be happier if I stay away from the Tailgate. It's like watching the news. Depressing murder, depressing fire, depressing beating, depressing revolt, depressing law, weather, sports and then a short movie of a squirrel water skiing.

I already looked around, couldn't find anything happy to post. It's a sad world.

Honestly, the world is not as glum as some make it out to be. However, the "sad" stories are the ones that draw people, therefore they are the ones that get press.

We've had this discussion before and people have found some wonderful heart warming stories... people read them and post how wonderful they are and in a few hours and half a page later they are on page 2.. while the sad and evil threads go to 5 and 6 pages...

We are living proof of why the media focuses on this stuff.. because we hate it so much we can't turn away, it's like watching a train wreck.

For some of us though it's tough as well... I see a lot of people on the worst days... (work at a hospital)... but it does seem lately a lot of sad stories in the tailgate.

Well of course the world is tough. However, there is a lot of good in the World too. You just have to find it.

I owned a BB gun. Wanted one for a loooong time when I was a kid. My father finally got me one when I had my tonsills out. Went hunting with my friends many times. Never hit anything until one day on the way home from hunting. A flock of birds flew into the tree right above us in my neighbors driveway (we were almost home). They were chirping and stuff....I raised my gun, pointed it at a bird and shot. It fell to the ground dead. I looked at that bird...it had flown into the tree just a second ago...having a good ol' time chirping with it's buddies...and I went and killed it. I put that effin' thing away and never shot it again.

Now, I understand that owning guns is a constitutional right. And that there COULD be times when one would come in handy for protection...especially in a vaccuum of power or a catastrophie (like Katrina or something).

But I don't like them! Mostly because of what happened to the little girl in this thread and because kids bring them to school...etc., etc.

Vette - for some people, guns are terrible. For others, they range from ok to fabulous and fun.

I fall into the latter category. I love to shoot. Target shooting mainly, but I hunt as well. Not many days go by that I don't shoot or clean or handle a gun. That's just me, I guess.

The key is RESPONSIBLE gun ownership. Lock them up. Put the ammo and mags in a different location. My family will not touch any of my guns without me present. (mainly cause they are locked up ) My family also knows the instant/immediate reaction to gun carelessness. Death or massive injury.

Responsibility. Concerned gun owners like myself absolutely hate to see/hear of a story like this.

By the way, I also remember the first bird I shot. I felt about like you did probably. However, I still hunt.

I agree arch... I'm not a fan of guns at all and will never have one in my household besides my paintball gun (which is tricked out to beat the band by the way)...

in this case I don't know what the parents could have done differently besides trying to teach their kids about gun safety? Not much you can do when your kid sneaks one into the house...

Michelle, I think you took my comment the wrong way.

I'm not in any way upset for the stories being posted at all, I'm upset because the number of these stories that are out there. I meant that it seems that there are more and more sad stories in the news nowadays, and it's just sad to see.

I apologize if you thought I meant I was tired of you or other posters creating the threads.

I used to play paintball 2 or 3 times a week. We had a woods - about 3 acres - stream running through the middle of it............so much fun. The very first time I played - thought I was Mr. Tough Guy.......had a guy pinned down (or he had me pinned down). Then pow - I saw the paintball coming at me, but I didn't have time to move - and BLAM, right in the forehead. After that I learned what "cover" was.

Does anyone really enjoy it? Come on... theres stuff that can be discussed here that is worth discussing, and then there is other stuff that is just garbage news like dead kids / tortured animals / etc etc

So what's your point then????

Don't post "garbage" threads about poor kids getting beaten and murdered? Don't read them. People still may want to discuss it on here. You don't have to.

Tragic, uncalled for, unresponcible parents.

I have guns in my house, but they are locked up, key is hid, ammo is locked in a totally diffrent place, even if they could get to the gun it has another trigger lock on them & my shot guns have a barrel lock, I have also taught my children how to handle guns, how to respecet guns and still I hid the keys.

More children are killed in automobile accidents every year, but ya dont hear people calling for all the cars to be shut down and locked in the drive ways, more people irresponcible behind a wheel, than behind a gun, of cource not we need cars to survive, get around, so I guess it's not the object in the hand it's the hands the object is in.

You do have a lot of people (myself included) calling for better car seat laws and for better car seat education though because proper use of car seats can help prevent a lot of fatalities...

and in terms of guns I think you do it the 100% proper way... lock the guns up and teach the kids how to be responsible with them... in terms of this story, this was not a case where the parents owned a gun and didn't have them locked up... a kid found a gun on the side of the road and brought it home and hid it where his little brother found it... the only thing I think the parents could have done differently would be to do a better job of educating their kids on gun safety. Of course, if you're a parent and not a gun owner, how much would you think to educate your kids on gun safety?

I think the reason these types of stories carry longer discussions is because there is something of substance to debate. In this case "Whether or not the kid should have been arrested on the spot."

In the "happy" posts, there's not much to say other than "Awww, that's nice" and that's it.

The "negative" posts bring forth issues that we can discuss, find the pro's and con's, and maybe enlighten each other on the things that our society faces everyday.

Yep, I've posted a couple of good stories in the past month. They drop like a rock. The very people complaining didn't post in those threads. Hmmmm.

There are far more good stories than bad stories in the world, far more good people than bad people, and lots of completely loving families out there. That's not news worthy and the threads about good things are evidence of that. There's no controversy with them, thus less posts and interest.

So, doom and gloomers, get off the whining ship and open your eyes to the good in the world and quit acting like there is more bad than good.
