LOS ANGELES -- Bryant Gumbel has given up his role as an NFL Network play-by-play announcer after two seasons.

The NFL Network said Friday it was looking for a new play-by-play announcer to work with Cris Collinsworth on the network's Thursday and Saturday night games.

"I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to call NFL Network games the past two years, which was a new experience for me," Gumbel said in a statement. "But we've agreed that we'd all be better served going in different directions."

Good news, he was terrible. Hope they get an improvement.

I agree. I never cared for him calling games and think it's b/c he sounded so out of his elements. Maybe b/c I couldn't shake seeing him on the Today Show all those years before school
You know who I think would fit right in is Bob Costas. Well, maybe.

Bob would atleast get the players names correct. It was Gumbel who butchered them right?

Sweet now I won't have to listen to such crap when the Thursday night games come around. Gumbel sucked plain and simple, he's a great talk show host but trying to call play by play NFL games in poetry form doesn't work.

Plus his voice just doesn't work.

Gumbel is a classy guy, but he did a poor job at NFL network.

I really think that Gus Johnson is a good announcer. That would probably be a step up for him, right?

I love Gus, he's one of the few that gives the Browns some love, he's one of the best at CBS. He'd be great choice, I wonder if they go after a Jim Nance or Joe Buck, and try to land a big fish?

I doubt they could pry those guys away. They are number one guys at networks that televise more games.

Gus does a good job. Seems to do our games a lot.

He gets excited during good games, usually doesn't screw up info or names too much, and is enjoyable to listen to.

That would be soooo perfect, Gus Johnson is a great announcer, but CBS loves Nance so Johnson is always on a lower tier game.

I don't see why Johnson couldn't do both CBS games and NFL Network games.

I know Collinsworth works for a few networks, but are most guys allowed to do that? I really am asking.......as I don't know.

Ya know, after I posted, I was wondering...is the NFL Network part-owned by NBC, mainly because it seems like they use alot of NBC people...but if they don't, then i'd be all for Gus Johnson going to the NFL Network.

Good question. I don't know.

Gus is cool. If not him, they do need someone dynamic though. Gumbel was too far removed from the game he once knew.

I don't know that he was removed from the game as much as he simply didn't have it in him.

If you're a good announcer, you can adapt to any sport, but if you don't, all the knowledge in the world won't help you.

I don't care how much football he knows, Mel Tillis would never make a good announcer.

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.

Get Direct TV. You can get NFL network and pay less money. Better picture too.

In the end I don't really care who is on the announcing team.

I pretty much tune them out except for information during the play...down, distance, who made the tackle, that sort of stuff.

All the other commentary doesn't bother me much.

I'm pretty much the same way with television.....now of course the times I must listen on the radio then the announcers become someone important to me.

Thank you Gumbel for leaving. I don't think he even knew the players names (Al Gore, Rick Romo, etc)

Makes no difference to me,,, I have Time Warner Cable and they STILL haven't resolved thier issues with the NFL Network so I don't get that channel..

August 1st will be two years since they took over for Adelphia Cable... and still, NO NFL Network..

I feel the same way as you and Shep,Peen but what irritates me is these national broadcaster that just blah blah blah about the city, the team and its history, and everything else they can read off some note cards their producers hand to them and they make it painfully obvious they have no clue what they are talking about. I wish the NFL would go to local broadcasters so each team would have the " TV voice of the team" sort of like baseball has. Theres no reason why the home and away team couldnt have a set of broadcasters at the game. I for one think Jim Donovan is very good at what he does and would like to be able to listen to him do the away games on TV(I already listen to him on the radio while at home games).

Jim Nantz? I don't know why CBS is so in love with him, he may be the world's most boring announcer.

I'll agree on Gus Johnson though...everyone loves him.

I know, it sucks... last I heard, it could be another two years before it happens.

Put Bernie with Collinsworthless, that way he could adroitly, (or not) set him straight when he pops off with one of his snide, smarmy remarks.

I don't know Cal.. Bernie is maybe one of the smartest guys I've ever heard do color commentary for a broadcast, but man,, he's a horrible announcer... just horrid..

Last year duing the Preseason when he was on, he was picking things up before they happened. He was reading the D even then. The guy has an amazing mind for football...

For those of us that are used to his speech pattern, he's fine, but to those that are outside of the Browns fan base, I could see where they could think he's always drunk when he talks.

It pains me to say it, but I don't think it would work out... too bad really because the guy is brilliant..

I know, you're right... just my fantasy of a world where Collinsmouth would shut the hell up.

Yeah, he did a very good job at that. I was kinda surprised at how awful he was announcing the games.

Gumbel is a bad game announcer... solid, not great or spectacular on interviews, but solid.
