You can thank ESPN for their creation...

Fortunately the season is long, and we don't face Boston again until September.

I know, its absolutely sickening to see these clowns who claim to be "fans."

Even my girlfriend made a comment last nite during the game saying something to the effect of "where were these fans 10 years ago"

8 quality starts this year and only 5 f'in wins. Makes me furious.

Doing the same thing I was doing 10 years ago. Sitting in front of the TV watching my team play.

The Red Sox have always had a wide fanbase, you cannot deny that. Granted there's bandwagon fans, but that comes with any team that has found success after a long drought.

Indians attendance in 1992 was under 20,000 per game, then was up to over 40,000 during their run in the late 90s. Then back down 21,000 in 2001 to over 28,000 last year.

But, yes. Red Sox fans are all bandwagoners.

We keep saying it's early.....but when is early offically over, because in this divison were digging ourselves a good size whole, good thing Detroit is also.

were just not playing good baseball, to me the team look to have no fire right now, there standing around waiting for last year to happen or waiting for something else to go wrong, Wedge needs to work these guys thru this, & I'm sure he will.

We might have to be looking into trading somebody to get an arm or two for the bullpen, mainly closer..it's never to early to start looking

Prior to the season, my biggest fear was the closer. JoBo was "doing it with mirrors", like a magician, last year. The bullpen, recently, has looked a tad shaky overall. The hitting hasn't exactly set the world on fire and our "ace" has looked like crap.

It IS early but I'm hoping we're not looking at 2006 all over again (big expectations, bigger letdown).

I was at the game last night, and there is the makings of an ugly rivalry between Cleveland and Boston. There was a legit fist fight in the bleachers a section over from me, and several other near misses. It was a good time

Maybe a few of them but not all. As a student of sports, log, you know full well the Red Sox have always had a huge fanbase. So why get petty?

I've been a Sox fan since Carl Yastrzemski stole my 12 year-old heart. That's well over 30 years, crybabies.

Somebody earlier in the thread complained about Sox fans being whiners. (He went on to make a few other comments about Sox fans that made it clear he had limited knowledge on the subject.) I wonder if that person came back and read the two-bit comments from fellow Tribe fans. Talk about whining and moaning. Hey, I know it sucks when your team comes close and loses but you ought to listen to yourselves sometimes. It's really pathetic. (I don't mean to include all Indians fans in that. I know there are some who are good faithful fans and who don't need to hate in order to enjoy the game.)

Oh well, see you in September guys. Go Red Sox!

ps. Thanks for the congrats Jules. I know you're loving it.

I'm not arguing that the Sawx have a dedicated fan base. However, it has also grown exponentially over the past five years as the front-runners flock there. I was at those games in the early 90's at Muni where Red Sox Nation magically forgot the directions to Cleveland.

Yeah, that's any team, though. The Indians have their share of bandwagoners, just like the Browns will now (hopefully). We know who the true fans are.

Thats the thing, its just been recently (since 2004) that they have been out in droves. Hell, Bill Simmons wrote an article saying that last year. Sure, we all know they have a big fan base, but I remember the playoffs in 95 and 99 when we played them, and they were nowhere to be found.

In all of professional sports, they have become "the cool team to like."

ok, so let's calm down with the name-calling, i thought that wasn't allowed here?

second of all, you are one person, and it's very nice that you have been a red sox fan since yastremski came on, but can you speak for all of those who now show up at stadiums as "fans" when really, red sox fans weren't known for travel 5, 10, 20 years ago?

it's a fact, the red sox didn't have the traveling fan base that they do now, actually, only the yankees can say that, and the cubs to a certain extent...

yeah, and guess what happened in the late 90's?

the browns moved to baltimore.

the cavs were horrible, nba tickets are expensive, the tribe was the only show in town

people cannot deny that there are a ton of people who have jumped on the sox bandwagon after '04...

sure, the tribe had their bandwagoners, just like every other team, but at least these casual fans in other cities don't claim them to be their team, for the time being, until the next trendy team comes along...

You can thank ESPN for that. Hank Steinbrenner wasn't crazy when he said Red Sox Nation was a creation of ESPN.

Hell, Yankee Country might be as well. I truly believe the theory of the "vicious cycle." Here me out on this...

ESPN covers Yankees and Red Sox more than any other teams in baseball...they can say it's because of market size all they want but it's not necessarily like that in the NFL or NBA.

Anyway, ESPN puts extra focus on Red Sox and Yankees...they're on the most ESPN telecasts. Yankees/Sox is almost always on. Casual viewer feels like he has to pick a side. Casual viewer picks side. Casual Yankees/Sox fan is born.

The process repeats and it only keeps building. Those who feel like their team doesn't stand a chance because of the revenue structure in baseball abandon their team and give in, either out of frustration, hopelessness, or whatever.

Basically, the national sportscasters say "If you're not a Yankees or Sox fan, we really couldn't care less." Younger fans notice it, especially impressionable kids. Kids in that merchandise don't know any better, it's how the media conditioned them, regardless of what their parents teach.

The sad thing? The Indians actually have a sizeable fanbase outside of Cleveland...if only they were catered to.

And I've seen many years where Indians' fans 'magically' forgot the directions to Cleveland as well and just as 'magically' reappear when the team is winning. It's the same thing with every winning team. Their fans get more excited to see them and the other teams' fans whine and call them band wagon fans. It's as predictable as anything in sports.

Are there bandwagoners? Of course, everywhere. But, it's ridiculous to label all the fans that way and it reveals a person's limited reasoning capabilities when they partake in that kind of generalizing.

As for the name calling LeBron, I've been called a bandwagoner here too many times to mention. Nothing's ever done about that.

And to whomever said I'm only one, that's true. But I know as many or more truly devoted Sox fans than I know truly devoted Indians' fans and I've lived in both places. Regardless, as I said at the beginning, it's typical and to be expected. I really don't mind as long as my Sox are playing well and I'm able to enjoy it when I can.

nobody is doubting that jacobs field, or whatever you want to call it, fills up more when the tribe is winning

what i am saying is that stadiums across america have these huge gatherings of so-called red sox fans when boston comes to town

5 years ago? it wasn't like that

that's the point i'm trying to make, yeah, sure you can call the people that show up when the tribe wins bandwagoners, but that happens in most places, what i'm talking about are these brand new fans that show up in opposing stadiums...

And does that mean that all of those fans are on the bandwagon? And why do Indians' fans care? Does calling other teams' fans' loyalty into question make them feel better about their team losing? Does it make their team play better? Does it do anything but display poor sportsmanship?

I've been an Indians fan for a long time. I follow them every year, know the roster, strengths and weaknesses, etc... and when I lived in DC I tried to go see them when they were in Baltimore. I was far more adament about going when the Indians were good. (and I was far more vocal at the game) Is that really a shock to anybody?

When they were good, I'd pay the money, get good seats, etc..

When they were not good, I'd go if a vendor gave me tickets.. but I wasn't going to shell out a couple hundred bucks to go see a sub .500, no chance of making the playoffs kind of team...

Does that make me a "bandwagon" fan?

Well, I can't say that I take note of something like how many opposing fans are in the seats.. unless there is something to take note of... and in the game Borowski blew, I guess you could choose to notice how many Red Sox fans were in attendance, I chose to notice how many Indians fans left in the latter innings of a close game... By the time the 9th inning rolled around, the lower level had Red Sox fans and not much else, then when the game was over, they were all congregated behind the dug out. I really don't think there were that many of them... it just appeared there were because the camera focused on them a lot and as seats emptied they moved down to better seats and all ended up sitting together... just my opinion...

Should be an interesting game as we face Liriano in his 2nd start back from his surgury. The Royals roughed him up pretty good last Sunday, hopefully we can also...

again, you are just one person, can you speak for every other person wearing red sox garb?

and sure, in the mid-to-late 90's it was tough to get tickets, but i remember going to games at the muni when boston was in town, and there was no following like there is now...

wow, even simmons called them the trendy team? that's funny because the guy never says a bad thing about a boston team...

i can't go through every red sox fan that shows up at jacobs field and tell if he or she is really a fan, but i just know i don't ever remember an abundance of red sox fans in a cleveland stadium, or really, any stadium for that matter

and i guess espn is a little bit to blame for it, because according to them, there are only 2 major league baseball teams...

as much as i loathe the white sox, i found it funny how very little of coverage they got when they clinched their first world series title in almost as long as the red sox (or the cubs)

i remember dan patrick doing his show, opening up with talk of the series, and then going off about T.O., or steroids, or red sox/yankees

i used to root for the red sox, because they were like us, they were a cleveland-esque team, but this whole red sox nation thing has gotten out of hand...

i don't get that argument at all...

if a cleveland team won a championship, there wouldn't be ridiculous amounts of their fans in opposing stadiums (every opposing stadium) like there is with "red sox nation", you don't see it with some of the more recent champions... where are the giant spurs crowds at? how about the cardinals? white sox?

and the argument about her being one person is she says "oh, well i've been a fan since carl y. came along" and like i said, she's just one person, that doesn't speak for the entire group...

i don't get what that has to do with me using phrases like i guess, i know, i loathe...

bad form.

Oh, is that really what I said or what you believe I said? You seem to be bordering on delusional. Here's the actual quote that I wrote on Friday. Reading words that are actually there is a very helpful way to comprehend.

Quote:

And to whomever said I'm only one, that's true. But I know as many or more truly devoted Sox fans than I know truly devoted Indians' fans and I've lived in both places. Regardless, as I said at the beginning, it's typical and to be expected. I really don't mind as long as my Sox are playing well and I'm able to enjoy it when I can.

So I'll reiterate my question to anyone since no one's answered yet. SO WHAT? Sox fans want to travel now or show up for road games because they're excited. (wow, who could've ever called that one?) I do not deny that some are bandwagoners but based on the folks I've met in my experiences, many are not. There really aren't many things that are like they were 5, 10, 15 years ago... I'm not claiming anything other than the fact that a good many of these people most likely aren't just along for the ride. I wouldn't want to try to ask you to see the possibility of that through all of your apparent anger.
God bless haters.

Keep arguing that point though...it's good to keep the discussion based on conjecture when it's your point that has been called into question. (that's sarcasm)

I lived in Boston prior to the Sox winning their first of two Titles... and I said it then and stand by it now... their fans are the most avid and crazy fans I have EVER seen... and I'm a diehard Buckeye and Browns fan and have seen our fan base... but at least the fans in the NE area are just plain nuts about their Sox... which probably increased 10 fold when they won their first title... I mean people celebrated in that town for weeks after they won their title... I've never seen so many adults break down in tears after a game... it was just unreal.

I'm sure there are a lot of band-wagon fans... but there are a lot of serious Red Sox fans all over the nation...
