Steve McNair Announces Retirement
Steve McNair's Press Conference will be held at 1 pm in Owings Mills, MD by Mike Duffy
Apr 17, 2008, 10:28AM

Veteran quarterback Steve McNair will officially announce his retirement from a stellar 13-year career at a press conference at Ravens headquarters in Owings Mills, Md. at 1:00 p.m. today.

The 2003 NFL co-Most Valuable Player was the unquestioned offensive leader of the Ravens in two seasons in Baltimore.

He spoke to a capacity crowd in a team meeting before the Ravens’ first organized team activity Thursday morning.

Joining McNair will be head coach John Harbaugh and GM Ozzie Newsome, along with longtime teammates WR Derrick Mason and CB Samari Rolle.

Hmmm.. wonder where they're going in the draft?

I'm kinda bummed. McNair really limited the ability of the offense. He could NOT throw over 20 yards. It made defending the Turds that much easier. I was hoping for him to hurt the Turds another year or two.

My guess at #8... Matt Ryan, if he is gone... Joe Flacco. Flacco would be perfect for Cam Cameron's offense... big arm, very accurate.

And the entire AFC North just cheered the possibility of Kyle Boller being their starting QB again.

No way Flacco goes in the top 10. Late first at earliest (and thats if someone trades back into the first to get him, because no one near the bottom of the first needs a QB). Most likely going to be early 2nd for Flacco.

Matt Ryan never gets to #8, Cheifs, Falcons, or Jets will take him. Plus a team could trade with New England to come up and get him.

I think the Ravens will trade down abit in round one, then reach and take Brohm or Henne. Either way the 2008 starter is probably Troy Smith. Great news for C-Town!!

Not gonna happen man. Though Boller does continue to show glimpses of his ability at times, he is not the long-term answer there. If they don't take Matt Ryan or the next best QB available at the #8 spot, they will be laughed out of Baltimore.

But a guy can dream can't he?

That being said, I always liked McNair. I thought he was a good QB. Just got beat up over the years. I wish him luck.

*Edit* And what about Troy Smith? Is he just gonna fall by the wayside?

You are probably right regarding Flacco. He is a favorite of mine, so I tend to push him higher than his proven worth. I think he has the tools to be a future stud, although he is probably less ready than some others.

Agreed no way does Flacco go that early, Ryan wont be around for thier pick and they have bigger needs at OT.

They will live with Bolier or Smith for one more year, or maybe see who's availble still in FA to bring in as a # 3 QB just in case. Wonder if Vinny Testevertie's agent is dialing the phone up yet.

Anyway I hope whom ever they draft makes alot of money off them and has a crappy NFL carrer

They have needs certainly at OT, but the draft is deep in OT's. I fully beleive they go QB round one wherever they pick or move too.

Brohm and Henne will both be gone by the time they pick in the second round, but it really doesn't matter because neither Brohm nor Henne are close to being NFL QB's off the bat.

That leaves them with Boller and Smith, dumb and dumber. Do you want small pox or sars?

It'll be very similar to the camp battle we endured last year. Boller (Frye) will be the incumbent, battling it out with Smith (Anderson), the unproven back-up. Then, the rookie (Quinn) will be the #3 guy, sitting and being groomed as the Franchise QB of the future . Hopefully, whoever they draft takes a lesson from our boy BQ and gets into camp on time.

Why do you want something positive for the Ravens? I personally hope they draft Ryan at #8, and he sits out the whole year and re-enters the draft next year. Not going to happen, but that is what I hope.

Anyway, this is a bit of non-news. I always like McNair as a Titan, but he was just as likely to spend the majority of next season on IR as on the field anyway.

Well, he had a solid career. Good luck to him.

It'll be interesting to see what Baltimore does next weekend.

Really good and entertaining player just retired. I enjoyed watching him play.

Boller is the Rats QB.............That's great news for the rest of the NFL.

Yeah, hopefully his past two years as a Raven doesn't overshadow his first 10 years as a Titan.

It all comes to an end eventually.. McNair was a pretty darn good QB for a lot of years.. A few of those years, he was GREAT! Fun guy to watch play football.,.

Best of luck to him.,..

question to everyone...

Is he a Hall Of Famer? I'm really on the fence. I want to say yes because his Titans teams were always good, and he did almost win a super bowl (literally, by a yard)

but his stats in all arent overly impressive.

Nope.

He's not in the top 20 in any of the major passing categories and only made 3 Pro-Bowls.

He'll eventually get in the HOF, but not on his first eligible ballot. He was league MVP, went to several Pro Bowls, and won an AFC Championship. The Titans were too good for too long to only come up with 1 HOFer (Bruce Mathews) Mcnair, and Eddie George will both get in.

No way he gets into the HOF. It's not even close.

He'd get into the "Hall of Very Good" but he's not even close to having enough numbers to get into the HOF. If they let McNair in, they'd have to let guys like Kosar and Rich Gannon in

I agree. McNair was "very good" for awhile, but not a great one.

McNair was good, but IMO not a HOFer.

Tough? The guy was always hurt. People used to say Jeff Hostetler was tough, and he missed a lot of games due to being hurt, too. Brett Favre was tough - he played hurt and never missed a start.

McNair was tough. He was always hurt, but he played through a lot of injuries. I''ll bet that Brett Favre played through less pain than McNair for most of his career.

Maybe we didn't hear about all of Favre's aches and pains because he just wanted to go out and play football. It seemed like every time McNair had a hangnail it would be a big deal because he gritted it out. I'm not saying he was a wuss, but I just don't think he was as tough as Favre. JMHO.

Thats it right there, McNair's toughness was completely overblown, every year they would talk about the aches and pains McNair went through, they were no different than any other starting football player in the NFL, yeah it's a tough sport, you are going to be sore, every great player is hurting somewhere all season.

I will miss McHurt. I was hoping he would power us to at least one, maybe 2 notches. Boller won't be a solution. They need a brute qubee IMO. Anything might happen. Whack them Ratburdz regardless!

I always thought the guy was over hyped and didn't live up to expectations placed upon him, but I was never a fan of his. Solid vet but nowhere near Hall of Fame player.

I will give him credit though he knew his body was done, and is leaving the game wisely, not like some others who sit around way past their time, ie... Trent Green.

You guys are wrong about McNair's toughness. The reason he was tough was because he would stand in the pocket and deliver the ball no matter who was bearing down on him. He sacrificed his body and took some ferocious hits in order to deliver the ball accurately. Not many QBs are able to do that.

Ribs weren't spared

Floyd Reese was general manager of the Houston Oilers (now Tennessee Titans) when he made the no-so-popular decision to select Steve McNair third overall in the 1995 draft out of Alcorn State. Many thought he'd gone off the deep end to pass on Penn State's Kerry Collins, but Reese turned out to be right, a decision he revisited last week when McNair retired after a solid 13-year career.

Reese's favorite McNair memory? A 32-29 overtime win over the Giants in 2002, made possible by a 2-point conversion run by McNair that forced OT. "I said it on TV the other day; it had to be the game we played against the Giants at the Meadowlands when he had the rib problem," said Reese. " He hadn't been out of the training room all week, hadn't practiced . It was windy, just awful conditions. It was a game we had to win , and at the end of the game we called a quarterback draw and he scooted in. I went into the locker room to congratulate him and he was convulsing on the table.

That's how much it was hurting him to breathe. He's a winner, a great competitor."

I agree Vers. McNair's injuries weren't overblown at all. Dude played even when badly hurt. He seldom got a chance to heal.

People also forget that he ran alot his first few years as starter so he took alot more pounding then the average QB.

I think he's third all-time in QB rushing TD's and maybe yardage. Also, until he retired was first among active QB's.

His injuries weren't overblown. He played through some significant injuries. The media talked about it, not because he was a whinner, but because it was real.

He's not in the top 5 for rushing TD's by a QB:

Rushing (active through 2007):

Rushing (career):

Interesting to look at some of the names and numbers.....

McNair's 3,590 career rushing yards and 37 rushing touchdowns rank fifth and third respectively all-time among NFL quarterbacks. Among active quarterbacks, McNair ranks first in both rushing yards and rushing TDs.

wikipedia

That's where I got it.

The difference here is, "all-time among NFL quarterbacks ", whereas the stats your link is showing is among all players, including running backs, in which McNair ranks 113.

Yes, I was aware that the list I provided showed the rankings of all players.

The players above McNair on the list I linked include Otto Graham (44), Steve Young (43), Jack Kemp (40), YA Tittle (39) and Kordell Stewart (38)....which displays that he isn't in the top 5 for QBs as I originally stated.
