Just to level the playing field... your total is $25 and the pizza place is 1/2 mile from your house.

I work with someone who used to deliver pizza. He'd deliver to a guy, who is quite wealthy, and he'd never tip. Asked for all his change back. Pretty disgusting if you ask me. My sister works for one of his places and says the guy is a lunatic. Won't mention names in case someone around here knows him.....
Pizza delivery guys deserve a tip just like your waiter or waitress. The trend anymore is to jack them. Seems that these thugs around here order to a vacant house, wait there, and rob the guy for the pizza, the money, their car, cell phone, whatever. I see it quite often in the paper. Usually I tip them whatever change is leftover from what I gave them. If it was $12 something, I hand them 15. Usually at least a couple.

I agree. They work for tips just like a waiter / waitress. I give 3-4 bucks plus the left over change. One time my old man accidentally gave a $15 tip... I have no idea why. At first I was upset, but we just laughed it off. Either it made up for a jerk he had, or just made his day! Either way, 'sall good.

I always give at least a couple bucks. I was a bus boy in high school, so I got to see how upset the servers would get when they wouldn't get a tip, so I'm sure the same goes for the delivery guys.
I almost always give 20% to servers at restaurants. I put $3.00 for the pizza guy, but I may give more if it was fast, the guy was nice, etc.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

I know you had stipulations for cost and distance, but my pizzas usually come to $17-$18 and the places is well within walking distance (MAYBE a tenth of a mile). Whomever delivers gets a $20.
Though, because the place is so close, we rarely get delivery anymore. We're usually picking it up.

I tip the pizza delivery person the same amount I tip an inside server at a restaurant (15-25% depending on the service). If you think about it, the delivery person has a somewhat more difficult task. First, you have to FIND the customers, and THEN you have to deal with them.
As a former delivery person myself (a LONG time ago), I tend to treat the delivery people well if the food arrives on-time and it is reasonably hot. Also, if you become known as a "phone number" or an "address" that tips well, your service will generally be significantly better than other customers because all the store drivers will want YOUR order and they will put you at the top of their route. Something to bear in mind...

I typically give $3-4. To the people that have done this before, when you get charged $3 for delivery doesn't a portion of that automatically go to the driver? I bet that is why some people tip so poorly, because they already feel like they are paying them.

Typically $3 plus whatever change is left to round up to an even number. I tip more sometimes for unusual circumstances like really crappy weather..
I used to deliver pizza when I was in college, it's a sucky job but the tips are nice. The thing that sucks is that you are busy when everybody else is partying, weekend nights, football game nights, super bowl night, etc...

I tip to be kind. And more often than not, we order in when it's really cold or rainy. Further reason to tip someone that has to be out in that crap.
.....and that if you ever order from that restaurant again and the guy remembers you stiffed him from before.......don't be suprised if "something" finds its way onto your pizza. Remeber, these are the people that are bringing you things that you put in your mouth. Be kind to them.
I chose $4.

If the delivery person is polite ..... I'd give them a $5.
If they aren't .... they might get a buck.

on $10 order, i usually give a buck and some change. Not trying to hijack the thread but, what about carryout, they give you the bill and there is a line that says, tip?? are you supposed to tip with carryout? I almost never do but sometimes I feel shady and i dont think I should. I just dont know?

That confuses me, and buffets too. You pay at the front counter and they want a tip already??

I sort of disagree with the tipping based on how much the order was for pizza. The guy/gal loaded it in the car and drove the same distance whether they have 1 pizza or 8... As I said I usually give $3-4... if I order 8 pizzas for a party I'm not giving them $30... for expending the same effort as if I'd ordered 1 pizza.

Around here they charge $3 for delivery. So I give them an extra dollar - except 1 place - they won't take a check unless you give them your license number and s.s. number which they write on the check. I don't do that.
$1, because the driver is getting half of the delivery charge anyway.

If that is true, you just answered my previous question that no one replied to. Thank you.

I don't think that is universally true. Drivers get some mileage money for using their own cars. I'm not sure what that amounts to these days, but I would guess the delivery charge goes, at least in part, to pay for mileage. I doubt that any of the delivery charge is considered a tip to the driver.

I used to work at Dominos Pizza and did some work making pizzas and part time delivery. When someone does not tip it really pisses you off, you feel like taking their pizza back and leaving them nothing at all.
But if I recall, the biggest delivery I ever had was about 50 pizzas;needless the people were really really nice and this guy just gave me a 20 and I couldn't believe it. But either way working at a pizza place sucks, avoid it at all cost if you can.

Man, I worked for Domino's many, many, many years ago ..... and enjoyed it immensely. I went to tons of parties after work (that I got invited to while delivering pizzas) ...... made a nice amount of tips ...... and even met a girl or 2.
For a young guy it was a great job, and a lot of fun.

that's cool. Sounds like a fun way to meet people. On a different note, I think it's fun to see all the 'popular' kids from school 10-15 years later still doing the same thing. I'm sure it's a fine job, but there's gotta be something else out there.
