Though I wasn't even on the ballot. LOL. We had our elections on Tuesday at the American Legion I belong too, and found out last night that I was a write in for 3rd Vice and won the position by a landslide 45-1. Now mind you I had no plans on running for the position and was the temporary J.A.G for the past couple of years but this came as a total shock not only that I was a write in candidate but the amount of votes I received without doing an ounce of campaigning. What it boils down to is that our club needs some younger veteran blood and they felt I am the guy. Pretty neat feeling getting a position that high up in our chain of command and didn't even ask or even try for it. My first project, one I have been pretty stern about is getting a POW/MIA monument in the club which we need, but it's a pretty cool feeling earning something and finding out how much your peers respect you, that in itself was shocking. Just tooting my own horn since I find this position a privilege but one I will take very seriously!

Congratulations. I was honored to be elected Commander at my Legion last year, but ended up resigning the position due to a lack of time to be able to devote to do the job properly. With the membership numbers dwindling, more and more time is required for recruiting and functions to keep a post alive and active.
Good luck and if you need anything that I may be able to assist you with, let me know.

Thank you and I appreciate your offer one that I am sure I will use. The POW/MIA monument its my first big project then I need to whip the honor guard into shape. Our Legion is a moneymaker but the real problems always seem to get ignored, that will end, well thats our plan. I am the youngest out of the group but they need the younger crowd to get more involved so I will be doing a bit of recruiting myself but overall our numbers are solid and one of the top in our area. If anything it's a nice bullet statement for my resume but that's not my goal, I want to make a good American Legion into one of the best in Ohio, though this cannot be achieved just by me alone the group that were elected are a good bunch of guys and we all have the same goals though some are more important then others. Again thanks for the offer and if I have any questions I will be PMing you as I stated I am honored to be elected and am still in a slight state of shock. I'm glad I got my homework done for today, yesterday because right now I am on cloud 9.

Leave Ammo alone, you guys pick on the kid way too much. Seriously though thanks for the congrats, it is an honor, not only to be able to serve my country at one point in my life but also to be revered by a group of guys that I didn't know had that much respect for me. As I said it's a pretty neat feeling!

Hey congrats! My fiance has been Jr Vice and Sr Vice at our VFW. It has ups and downs. There's a lot of drama here, but the things they did for the community and post etc were very fun and rewarding. I wish people would focus more on that rather than who hates who. But again congrats! =)

You know, I've heard many on this board state just how stupid and easily led the average American voter can be. And I've debated with them to stick up for the average voter. But after reading THIS!????? I must admit with great pain that I was DEAD wrong!

LOL, that is actually one of the perks of my job, free beer and if you know me those are two words that are dangerous when put together concerning me.

I've been to a couple of them.
Pit had us to one of his spots. Was it the Eagles, Pit?

Yes, it was The Eagles.
I was the Chaplain there.
Not really crazy in being in the "politics" end of these clubs. But the Chaplain visits the sick members who are in the hospital, consoles the families of members who have passed on and posts on a board letting the members know of others that are ill in the club.
I felt it was a job that needed filled and the position was vacant at the time. I talked with Fletch a great deal earlier this morning and wished him well at his new position.
It sounds as though he has a great group there to work with and that is key here. Often times you get people in office whose loyalty lies within a "certain part" of the club, not "the club as a whole". That's where you run into problems.
And as much as many in the public knock such clubs, they do a great deal of fund raising for many worthwhile causes.

Well if you dont still have me on ignore and can read this, congrats. Thats sounds like a very nice honor. As a kid I spent a lot of time at American Legions and VFWs with my father and uncles. We always had a blast at the fish frys and steak cook offs.

Nice! I haven't been to one of those places in quite a while, but the stories you hear are some I will never forget. Plus, shoot, the food and cheap beer can't be beat. I lost the card I had to go to the one in Euclid. Actually, my wifes Grandpa is the Grand Poohbah of the VFW in Collinwood/Euclid. He was an engineer in WWII and ran it as the President for 30 years or so. He is like 90 now and still involved but not so much. He is a good guy.
Our honor defend, we will fight to the end, for OHIO! GO BUCKS!

Good point, we do a lot for the community each year we donate 50,000 dollars to the Montgomery County Sheriffs Department, donate to numerous schools and charities, just last month we gave a check for 10 grand when we were only asked for 4,000 to a group who needed funding for books and other school related materials for special needs kids, we paid for everything, fund raisers for members in need etc... As Pit stated the guys I am working with all have the same goal and we want to keep up with what we already do, but want to do more.

Congrats on the win.
In high school I won the Senior Class President election as well as President of the Student Government (but due to rules of limitations I had to forfeit one of them, I chose to keep Student Government because it looked more favorable on college applications. too bad, I could have ruled that school). I proposed a whole bunch of ideas for fundraisers and scholarships but unfortunately I was overruled by the principal on most. My role was essentially limited to figurehead.
I was able to give a speech at our graduation, which was probably the highlight of the office. I didn't even know it existed but I was actually one of 20 finalists for Ohio Class of '04 Graduation Speech of the Year, but I lost. It was surprising also considering my speech was the shortest of our class. But I do admit, I love speaking in front of large crowds.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.
