we're looking at our options for the coming fall, and among them are institutional daycare providers...
my wife interviewed a few yesterday, and came back with something i thought was rather disturbing...
one of the daycares is associated with a church...one of these mega-churches that have everything but a grocery store and a gas station...anyway, they gave us application materials, and included was a request for 2 letters of reference...these are to verify our parenting quality and religious status...are you kidding me?...
this is an organization that provides a service at a (not cheap) cost...and they're evaluating if we're fit to buy their service?!...they assured my wife that you needn't be a devout Christian to be approved (which seems would be approaching illegal)...but if that's true, then why bother asking?...
no other service industry i can think of does this...mechanics don't evaluate whether you treat your car well before accepting work...restaurants don't assess your taste in food before they serve you...
my wife thought it was odd, but she wasn't bothered by it...i was really agitated...am i being unreasonable here?...

Well, if they rubbed you the wrong way, keep looking.
Besides, I'm not sure I'd want my kids brainwashed at that age anyway. But that's just my personal opinion.

I'm sure there are a variety of reasons for it, whether good or bad. They have a right to pick and choose the kinds of families they service. I would personally never take my child to a daycare but, that's just my opinion.

Business owners have the right to refuse service to just about anyone. I heard about a full service gas station being built in Cincinnati that will only allow high end cars. The interviewer said, "so, what if someone pulls up in their Cadillac Escalade"? The guys said, "No service. No SUV's, and only a select few American made cars."
Whatever. I would tell the gas station and the daycare center to take a hike.

as of now, we still prefer in-home care, but there are advantages with the organizations...
everything else about this one seemed fine, and i'm ok with my son being taught Sunday School sort of things...it was just the absurdity of being background checked that bugged me...

There are a lot of organizations that require "background checks" for membership. I guess I don't see it as a big deal.

as i see it, this is not a membership, it's a service provider... what sorts of organizations do you see as analagous?...it's not like a union that serves members on every account...they do 1 thing...make sure my boy doesn't eat anything sharp or poisonous while i'm away... ...unless, of course, they intend on molding an entire worldview for him on our behalf, in which case it would be more like a membership...a membership i wouldn't buy, but if that's what they're about, then state it...

As far as I can tell, most churches have "membership". For example, my cousin and his wife wanted to have their daughter baptized but don't belong to a church. So, they asked my Grandmother's minister if he would do it and he agreed only after they agreed they would find a church and become members. Quote:

Of course they do. It's a religious based daycare, right?

My wife was been trying to get me to place Kenleigh in daycare at least a day or 2 a week, but I flat out refuse.
If my dad is willing to watch her, then I see no reason to do it. Sure, I bet he'd like a break sometimes, but he knows as well as me. If you don't need to put your child into daycare, don't do it. If you have no choice, then you gotta do what you gotta do. But as for me, my wife can ask all she wants. She's not going.
