I usually go for rock and metal but every once in a while I'll stick in some Dre or Eminem. I like some rappers but loathe others such as Kanye West and TI, I don't like them but that's just me...

And I have not said that "some,although few" rap artists are not "musicly educated". But many in our nation waste their degrees on a far less than they are taught. So it is with rap IMO

Had people not bought into "the thug message" to start with, rap would have been dead long ago IMO

Rap will never die...sorry to disappoint you. There will always be an underground movement. That's what I listen to. Don't listen to most commercial rap.
What I don't understand is what makes you think that people who listen to their music loud are trying to "force feed" it on someone else. I like my music loud, for that reason alone, I like it loud. I could care less if you hear it or not.
I don't understand why some of you feel the need to hate rap and rappers so much. They're not responsible for the mischief of the youth, their parents are. Period.
Not liking rap is one thing, but railing on it, and calling it a blight on society, is excessive. Since people can choose to listen or not listen. Over-taxation is a blight on society. Don't get it twisted.

Its entertainment!!! If you're not entertained by it then simply TURN IT OFF and find something more entertaining. Is some of it violent, rebellious, misogynistic? How exactly is that different than certain movies and/or tv shows, video games etc.? If you dont like Soprano's dont watch it, dont let your kids watch it. If you dont like American Gangster dont watch it, dont let your kids watch it. Seems like a pretty simple solution.
Rap(pers) didnt create these "problems in society", the problems were visable long before rappers started putting them in their lyrics and videos.
If you want to rail against society's problems then cool do it, but closing your eyes to the same negative issues in other forms of entertainment and then coming down hard on rap(pers) is

rap reflects more than just the "urban" black person. It reflects all types of black people, and not just black people but people in general. There are more than just black rappers, and I doubt that they can accurately reflect the reality of the "urban" black person. I don't always rap about the "urban" black person, mainly because I'm not "urban"

That's the beauty of music my friend. Art imitates life. People write songs about things they know and experience. Or to convey a particular message. Rap is no different, and thus, that point makes it music. The art of self-expression.
Rap has often been referred to as the CNN of the ghetto. In many respects, it very much is. In other respects, it is not. Life in the ghetto is not always guns, drugs, and hoes. Although, they are aspects of that reality.
The problem is, when rap first got off the ground, it was mostly about partying. Then people used it to tell stories, those stories often told the struggles of ghetto life. As people became better skilled at rapping, the picture became more vivid. Now, that story has been told so many times, it's become redundant, and thus commercial.

The problem isn't the medium. The problem is the message of SOME rap. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. In fact, I listen to a rap artist by the name of T Bone. He is a Christain rapper and is very good. There was a "rockumentary" called "Hero" a few years back and he was in it. He was absolutely amazing and reache alot of kids.
I will take issue with one thing you said...and it's a slight one. You may like your rap loud and that is all fine and dandy.....until you are driving in a neighborhood and the music is so loud that the person in the house can't hear their own conversations or TV. Your rights to enjoy your music as loud as you want stops when it infringes on the rights of those that don't want to hear it. That isn't just for rap but for any music.

I agree with you, though, I don't have any added speakers in my car, so you will never hear me coming a block away. But when people are driving around like that, it's rarely more than a couple seconds that you hear them. If they're parked outside your house for an hour, then you've really got a legitimate beef. So, wait till they pass, and go on about your business. Even if you're stopped at a light next to someone, just let it go, it's not worth getting upset about. I've been next to someone blasting rock, and it annoyed the hell out of me, but a couple second later, they were gone, and that's that.

I used to listen to rap - Run DMC, NWA among them. DMC was great. NWA - I liked it at the time, but now not so much - and I don't listen to ANY rap now.
My point was (and if I'd have known you were going to respond, and if I'd have know I would be up I would've done it by now) to put up the lyrics of the country music I like - Kenny........I know there are exceptions in every genre, but country isn't all "I lost my dog, my wife is cheating, let's go shoot something". In fact, very little of it is.
Bottom line? It's all an individuals personal choice - music.
In fact, I am now currently listening to Public Enemy - Can't Truss it - great song. If you want to get your blood boiling. It doesn't reflect any reality whatsoever, though. What groups like P.E., NWA, etc, did was make money by enhancing the "us vs. them" mentality.
Current rappers? Don't know enough to even comment.

I couldn't disagree with you more. I don't think you truly understood what PE was truly about. Chuck never did it for money, the us vs them mentality was not "enhanced" by PE, it was narrated. Life enhanced it.

2 things. Chuck had the best voice ever for rap. Nuff said. Second thing: I don't believe he did that song in order to talk about slavery. I think he did it incite, and to collect. We'll probably never agree on that, which is fine. Let's face it, I'm discussing a group that was big in the late 80's. It's been a while since I listened to today's "rap". And I won't cause I don't like it. Edit: Chuck never did it for money, just like pro athletes don't do what they do for money. They do it for the "love" of the game. Right. Chuck did it for money. Then you don't know Chuck's entire body of work, including what he's done outside of rap.
He does have one of the most dynamic deliveries in rap...2Pac probably had the best though.

Yeah, I got to go with NDU on this one, PE was not about thuggery at all. Actually there message was/ is about empowerment of the people and a lot of that was through education and giving back to the community. PE was never about bitches and hoes and selling poison.

Okay smart alecs..........the GROUP Public Enemy was "thuggish", not the individuals. Just the name by itself is very revealing to that.
I saw one concert of theirs. I loved it, at the time. That was 1987 - and I have NOT followed the group, nor Chuck D since, so I speak only from my h.s. years and the one concert I went to. Violence was a "theme" for that group - based on the guys on each end of the stage with guns, posing, posturing, etc. (fake guns - or at least unloaded).
Chuck D may be a great person. I have no clue. From what you guys are saying he is, and I don't doubt nor dispute that at all. But, I don't feel it can be argued that they "branded" themselves as toughs in order to sell music, and that was my point to begin with.
