I think a better term for PE was militant.

They conveyed a " by any means necessary" message.

I understand now what you mean but PE was not thuggish in the sense of a NWA or somebody like that. Not in a gangsta type of way.

Okay. My bad. Wrong word usage on my part.

And yes, militant is a much better word for it. I still contend that they did it in order to sell. And, I still contend that Chuck D, and PE, made money doing it, contrary to what you or someone else posted.

I remember the comment that was made Arch and I had to laugh when I read it. Dude must think you gotta go platinum to make cash....you don't. Say it cost you $10k to make this song and you sell $500k of said song then you are making money but the way it was stated in a previous post made it out that if you didn't go platinum you weren't successful and making money which is completely wrong.

A song may hit #1 but that doesn't mean that album will go platinum....it just means that folks are buying that song and still paying the band $$$ for their stuff. So yeah they are making money off their music. Sometimes it's more about the message and the music than about the paycheck and retirement plan.

Well I would say their style and message was there before they became successful, but sure they made money doing it.

Answer me this...why would they continue to use the same style and message 20 years later, when that style of rap is OBVIOUSLY not marketable anymore and really doesn't sell well...you can claim a lot of groups did it just for the money, but consistency proves that they did it because they love it, because Chuck cares about hip hop and his community. So regardless of what you "contend", the facts indicate otherwise. The truth is, they've never been a commercially successful group. Because of their message. They were controversial, and developed more of a cult following, but as the music landscape changed, and their core audience got older, the sales declined. But the music and the message (evidenced by the album Muse Sick in Hour Mess Age...Music in our message for the ebonically challenged) stayed the same. Why would anyone who is doing it just for money, sacrifice millions to stick to a non commercial sound? Who did do that? Ice Cube! Ice Cube went from gangsta to millitant, to commercial. Now if you wanna say he did it to sell, I couldn't disagree, but not PE.

I wouldnt say they had no commercial sucess. It Takes a Nation of Millions and Fear of a Black Planet both did very well and got condiderable time on MTV.

I agree with what you say about them after that. Whether I agree with his views on a lot of things I always respected ChuckD .

Cube still has a nice mix though, he still makes gangster records, he still makes records with a message, I cant hate Cube for doing some commercial stuff to feed his family and keep the kids coming to the theater to see him.

I'm not hating, just saying, that if someone wanted to argue that he did it just to make money, I couldn't argue against it

While we're on the subject P.E. is in my top five favorite hip hop artists/ groups to listen to. For me it goes 1a. Nas 1b. KRS-ONE- 2. Public Enemy 3. Rakim 4. Mos Def throw in a little Roots, Pharoahe Monch, Talib Kweli, Wu Tang Clan, Big Daddy Kane and Slick Rick and your set.

For me though best Nas song ever is "It Ain't Hard to Tell"

Then my second favorite Hip Hop song ever Boogie Down Productions

Really though for music in general I think if you go in with an unbiased or at least open mind, I think you can find something you like in really any genre or at least most any genre. I mean I'm really not a big punk rocker but every once in awhile I'll throw on some Sex Pistols. And I definitely wouldn't consider myself a "Grunge" fan but Nirvana was amazing. I don't like much Ska but I listen to some Sublime anytime. I dislike country for the most part but it doesn't get much better than the man in black and some "Folsom Prison Blues". Basically what I'm saying is if you take the time to learn about a type of music or give a fair shot you'll probably end up at least appreciating it.

Nas is like the Afrocentric Asian, half-man, half-amazin

Honestly, I'd put Illmatic in the top 3 albums of all time, up there with Sgt Peppers and Highway 61 by Dylan. It's basically flawless, and that fact that he wrote/recorded the songs when he was 18 and 19 is ridiculous.

Nasty Nas pwns.

He's talented I just hate his new album. I'm not going to buy an album that I can't say the name of.

Well, you don't have to worry about that. It isn't going to be called that anymore, it's simply going to be untitled.

I personally didn't have a problem with it. I did think it was a little ridiculous, but I understood what he was trying to do. Most, however, would only see the title and automatically lump it as an unintelligent, thoughtless, meaningless vulgarity without giving the real meaning any thought.

I've heard a few songs so far off of it, and they are pretty good.

The "N" word.....the actual word, not the phrase

It was just entitled "". It's now untitled, but the majority of the songs are still following the same thing. There are a few that have been leaked, I could probably get you a link to listen to them.
