My contract is up in July though, and I'm looking at the Motorola Q3m, LG Voyager, Samsung Glyde or Samsung SCH-i760

Verizon LG VX9800. Just need a new battery. It doesn't hold a charge long enough anymore, but it is 2 years old. Otherwise, I love the phone.

Motorola MotorazrVX33 On At&T. Wanna get the new Sony Erickson
I live in the blackhole of cell phones and At&t is the only carrier i've had that get's great service everywhere around where I live. Have had Alltel and Sprint. Just couldn't see paying for a service that I didn't get service with most of the time.

Have been with Sprint for 10 years, or so. Getting better coverage all the time and share a family plan with Jules, Mom, and Grandma. Runs around $90/mo for all four of us with 600 minutes to share.
Not sure on my phone model...something slim like a Razr. Was going to go Krazr, but got talked out of it by the folks at Sprint talking about all the problems people had with them.
When my phone is up for renewal (every two years), I'm going to go back to the "free" phones. It's dumb to pay for a phone when the free ones work just as well. Unless, of course, you use it for internet or other features, and I don't.

I've been with Sprint since 2000 .... and have no reason to change. I have a reallly basic phone ... that makes and receives phone calls. Revolutionary!

Agreed, I like sprint myself.
I can watch the NFL network on my phone but I can't on my cable system.

AT&T + Samsung Blackjack (original). Love the phone and the service has been great wherever I go. The only thing I'm waiting on is for AT&T to expand their 3G network. Slowly but surely, it's getting there. I get 3G service just about everywhere I go now. Ironically, I DON'T get 3G service at my house yet (but it's coming).

I just recently bought the Blackjack II via AT&T. Love the phone as well. By far the best phone I've had.

Sprint. HTC Mogul 6800. It could beat the Blackberry up in a street fight.

You're due for a new one then, you could probably get a good one for a low price.

My phone is 4 1/2 years old, am I "due" for a new one? What makes one "due" for a new phone? Because there is some new phone with more features? Features I wouldn't use.........is that why?

Usually contracts are up after two years. After two years you qualify for a new phone at the new customer rate, which can be free or very cheap.
Batteries go bad and cellular networks update...it's best to be compatible with the newest stuff.

My son is real close to your age. The battery thing is a joke. If it goes bad, you buy a new one. Lots cheaper. My son has had 3 phones in the last 2 1/2 years, because each of the first 2 was "so old". (he bought the last 2 himself because I won't and wouldn't.)
I know how college students think, as I was one, I have a son that is one, and I'm really not that far removed from being one myself.

3 in 2 1/2 years is excessive.
I go every two years, when my contract expires. I figure if there's a phone I really want, its sequel will be out or it will be cheap enough by the time my contract is up that I'll get it. (ex: right after I got my old VX8300, LG came out with the VX9800 for $300...the 9800's successor was the enV, and later the enV2, which I just got for a good price).
Basically, Voyager 3 will be nice and cheap by the time it's time to re-sign with Verizon.

No offense, but I just don't get it.
My phone allows me to make calls, and get calls. I can text if I want to.
My wife has my number, my daughter, son, parents, and my 3 siblings. 2 friends have my number, and my in laws - all 4 of them do. No one else does. I hate being bothered with a phone call in the middle of work - especially if it's my family - and, since they are basically the only ones that have my number - I have told them if you call me while working, it better be important.
I just don't see the logic in spending $300 every 2 years on top of the monthly fee. To me, it's a damn waste of money. Even if it was $50. Damn waste of money. But, I work full time, as does my wife - I guess we have other things to worry about like a mortgage, insurance, etc. Having the latest and greatest cell phone isn't even a remote concern for us.
My son does not have the same attitude. He's like you.

Buy a new battery andfor the network updates...I do those twice a month on my phone. Verizon: *228 option 2. It searches for the latest cell towers and updates things.
I've had my current phone for over 2 years. I love the phone (LG VX9800) and do not feel the need for a new one. Only thing I need is a new battery, which I'm about to purchase for $40. Much less than the purchase of a new phone. And my work pays for my phone so that shouldn't even be an issue for me.

But you don't need to spend $300 every 2 years. You COULD...or you could even get a free phone every two years. (My dad went nuts when he heard I didn't go the free phone route).
And Babe...I know what you're saying too, but when I say compatible with the most newest networks, I mean is it 3G compatible or not? Not all phones are 3G compatible right now, especially with at&t. Verizon is pretty up on the game right now when it comes to 3G compliant, however.
I guess it's just because I've grown up on wireless phones and like shiny new gadgets, but I don't see why it makes sense to turn down a free phone every two years, or even get a huge discount on a phone you've wanted for awhile now once the contract expires.
But I can't understand people who get a new phone every year or 6 months (unless they break them...I know someone who's gone through 15 phones in college...thank God for phone insurance).

IDK if it's true for Verizon, but for Alltel, you can get a new phone up to 3 months before your contract expires as long as you extend the contract.

Two reasons.
1. If there is nothing wrong with the old phone why switch?
2. When you sign a NEW contract it locks you into that provider for two years, which limits your choices if you want to change. Also the monthly fee for the new contracts sure isn't going to drop. It will in most cases go up.
I AM ALWAYS RIGHT... except when I am wrong.
