Has anybody ever done one? I'm sitting here, waiting for the call to start the first one I've ever done. I'm not quite sure what to expect from it and how to approach it differently. I did everything this morning like I would for a normal interview, but I'm still left slightly on edge by this. Any quick tips before my phone rings?

I did one about a year ago for the job I have now. I just stayed relaxed, smiled a lot when talking the lighter subjects, and used semi-short answers, nobody likes someone rambling on, on the phone. The CEO who interviewed me said it was the best telephone interview he had done in his 20 years of doing it, so I did something right.

Think of Shotty in his underwear during the interview. Also smile while your talking, it makes a big difference in your voice.

I don't think laughing until you puke is necessarily a good way to get a face to face interview.

I was going to say Jules instead of shotty, but I thought that might open a whole can of worms

How did it go? I've had a couple recently, make sure there is no noise in the house and if anyone else is at home, ask them to be quiet during the interview, be in a totally seperate room also.
My last phone interview led to a face to face interview which led to me getting the job so if I can do it, you can do it.

You ever live out a sitcom episode? My phone interview was set up last Friday for "next Tuesday", because I was in Cincy this past weekend. They were supposed to call me between 9:30-10:30 AM. At 10:45, I was a little upset that they hadn't called, so I called them. I got the executive director and asked why I didn't get the call. He said, "You will... next Tuesday". Yeah... I'm pretty sure I can write this job off... lol

Turn off call waiting.

I've had this problem a few times. One time, I was living in Florida at the time and the company was in Maine. Well I got a call three hours after the fact because the person doing the interview was in a different time zone...something the company had failed to mention. Needless to say, I kind of wrote them off at that point.

Shows how professional that company is. When I set up my interview, I made sure I mentioned the date and not just the day, to avoid any confusion. Some people's definition of next Tuesday (or any day) is different from others.

My company is in a different time zone also, thankfully he mentioned central time when we talked. I would of looked silly showing up an hour early.

When you have it remember one thing: Your answers need to be concise and specific. The more specific you can be the better..

Kind of like the (permanent) sign at the Pub that says "Free Beer Tomorrow?"
I've had a couple phone interviews. The first one was actually for a singing gig! The sound quality must've been ok because I got the part.
As far as sitcom/mixups on calls go... way back when Who Wants to be a Millionaire was just starting, I made it past the first round of audition calls. They gave me a number to call back for the next round, between 5-6. I didn't want to get stuck in traffic and miss my chance, so I just stayed after work and called from the phone there. Every time I called, it said the number was "unavailable at that time." I kept trying over and over until 6:15... got ticked and went home. When I got home, there was a message on my answering machine. "Hey Brad, this is "Who Wants to be a Millionaire. We think we gave you the wrong (1-800) number to dial. Please call this other number instead!"
Well, the other number was long distance.. and I was still in the process of moving into my new place. hadn't picked a long distance provider. So I called them about 20 times collect until they accepted the charges They asked me to wait around another hour, for a call back, but I informed them that I was already going to be running late for opera rehearsal downtown because of all this. I ended up giving them the number for the payphone backstage at the Ohio Theater, and trying to listen for the phone to ring.. mentioned it to a friend, and she said.. "Oh, the payphone rang a little while ago, one of the folks in the Riverdance cast answered it."
To make a long story short (too late, I know) I ended up punching Regis in the face and I'm not allowed back in that studio again.

It's a screening to decide if they can or will bring you in for a sit down. You will be asked a few questions about work experience, salary expectations, hours you can or will work. Generalities really. Then if, they decide they like your answers, they will set up a time for a second more serious sit down and face to face interview.

If you choose to take the phone interview without dressing up...make sure you wear a new pair of skivies to feel a bit more professional.
This will also help keep the dog from sniffing around you!

Because we generally have a casual dress environment at work, anytime we see someone dressed nicely we always ask, "Phone interview today?"
