So let's leave the despressing OSU story and return to the depressing Browns' situation.

Phillip Morris has written a very interesting observation on Randy Lerner and his priorities. Here's the link:
http://www.cleveland.com/search/index.ssf?/base/opinion/116833569548420.xml?ocmor&coll=2

Just a few excerpts: "The product he and his family have put on the field since the Browns returned to the NFL in 1999 is a travesty. ......This looming disaster of a franchise is not only quickly losing the respect of its long-suffering fan base but, seemingly, that of its peers on the field of play."

Brutal, yes. But true.

Another guy writing about football even if the doesn't know what he's talking about.

Quote
the presence of Ohio State's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Troy Smith in the draft will present the Browns organization with an additional special challenge. Smith is simply the best player in college football; he's from Cleveland and has reportedly said he would love to be a Brown.

Umm, first it's debatable whether TS is the best player in college football, 2nd it's debatable that he'll be anything better than a backup.

The writer (Philip Morris) also whined about Lerner. But what the writer apparently doesn't understand is that Lerner is smart enough to hire football people he has belief in, and is humble enough to let them run the show.

I wonder if these columnists have editors to bounce their ideas off of, before they sit down to type????

Given that the Browns brain trust thought enough of Braylon Edwards, a talented head case of a receiver from Michigan (of all places), two years ago to make him a lottery pick, how can they possibly pass on Smith - especially if they trade their No. 5 overall pick in the draft for more lower first round picks?

Lottery? Is this the NBA? Article sux.

And when the hell are we picking fifth?
And if we COULD trade down (unless Thomas is there for us), that'd be great!!!

WTF is this guy saying?

He's saying he's a maroon who has no understanding of the Browns or football. I think he does a great job of conveying this.

Although Lerner technically owns the Browns, the team, in reality, belongs to all of us. Lerner has merely been given the unique honor and special privilege of being the caretaker of the trust.

I stopped reading when I got to this line, plus I read the thread prior and was alread informed of how poor the article is... Glad I didn't waste to much time...

Randy Lerner can spend Randy Lerner's money any way he so desires. But when the most loyal fan base in the country watches its owner invest tens of millions of dollars in an English soccer club, while the football team he trots out into municipal stadium each week is close to being garbage, you have to start asking yourself obvious questions:

I got to that part and realized right then and there that this writer is talking with his heart not his head..

Plenty of NFL Team owners have other business ventures.... Most of them made thier money doing something else before they bought an NFL Franchise,,

As far as I'm concerned, what he does besides the Browns is his business. As long as his interests don't hurt the Browns..

Randy has plenty of money to do both and probably many other things,,, It's his money...

Quote
And on that front, the presence of Ohio State's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Troy Smith in the draft will present the Browns organization with an additional special challenge. Smith is simply the best player in college football; he's from Cleveland and has reportedly said he would love to be a Brown.

Give me a break... Troy Smith is an excellent football player in College... It might be that he'll be an outstanding Pro QB... Butthe best player in the Draft,,,, Why, just because he won a Heisman.. The history of the NFL is littered with Heisman winners that got there only to flop.

This writer is the new Roger Brown.

And this one killed me:

The NUMBER 5 Overall PICK..... Did I miss something? I thought there was a coin toss coming up to determine if we are 3rd or 4th,,,

Well, that proves it,,, he's an idiot,

Wasn't Phillip Morris a cigarette?
Surprised smoke is not coming out of his ears.
I guess he also doesn't realize that football has a salary cap to work with.
All the money in the world won't insure the quality of the players on the team.
As someone else said, it's Randy Lerners money, he can spend it how he chooses as long as he lets the football people run the football end of things.
What the Browns need is a team President to run the business end of things and let Savage get people to play football.
This guy seems to be a maroon.

[color:"orange"]Winning cures all. The Bengals aint going anywhere...surely our fanbase ain't going to become Steeler fans.

We win all our Fan base comes back and more!

Peers respect on field of play. We kick butt they respect you simple as that. Sit n whine about don't help - become kick butt its not an impossible process.

Free Agency...there is a hot bed of Ohio based talent loving the Browns. We could make a nice living seducing stud FAs back to their home team to lead them to glory... Screw the rest

Now last but not least. [color:"red"]"The product he and his family have put on the field since the Browns returned to the NFL in 1999 is a travesty."

[color:"orange"]this writer is a complete and total ASS!!!
1. Randy took over the team in 04 - he sat back n observed.
2. His PRODUCT is in its first stage of the making...not SINCE 99 like this ASS and any other that wishes to repeat that LIE!!! His PRODUCT put on the field is from 05 on. I mean spew hate anyone and crapola all you want but at least get it right.

You'd be surprised...it's the most depressing thing I've ever witnessed but every time the Browns lose and the Steelers win, a Steelers fan from Cleveland is born.

[color:"orange"]As I said our priorities right now should be on one thing...build a winner and not quick fix...slow steady from the draft!

Winning will come and is a cure all. Those you spoke of - fair weather - like they wouldn't be the first clammoring back on the band-wagon!

We must remember that this guy is an associate editor on the "editorial" page. Before we complain how foolish he may sound remember that he is only sharing his "opinion" concerning the manner in which the Lerner's have blundered the last 6 or 7 years of the Brown's rebirth.

If you can overlook the "municipal stadium" error and the Troy Smith overestimation he is speaking as a Cleveland brown's fan...although an uninformed one.

Lerner is certainly permitted to spend all his money/time on a soccer team if he chooses...but he will be kicked around himself until his team that uses the oblong ball begins to play respectable football.

The editor in chief must have taken the week off...no way this should have been published if the big guy knew anything about Brown's football.

The writer is an ass for making so many mistakes. However, this does not mean that Junior isn't an ass!

Junior is an ass!

I wonder if it's possible to look up all the changes that have been made each year since he took over and compare them w/other teams? Anyone know that answer to that? I would like to look up the information and post it. I guarantee that he's made way more changes than the other owners.

I do remember the last time he made a bunch of changes. Most of his homers argued that he had to get his people in place and that he would be a stable owner from there on out. Yeah, that's happened.

And wait to next year. There will be more on the way.

This team has very little chance of winning while Junior owns the Browns and I pray every day that he sells the team.

[color:"orange"]How can you say that?
1. you grossly over estimate his pulling of strings.
2. Odds are very, very great he sells the Browns they move! How can you pray for that

I say it because I know it.

Kinda like how I knew that Lott was outta here and you guys told me I was nuts. Kinda like how I knew Leon was Leon before all of you. Kinda like how I knew Collins was Damien when you all told me I was just being bitter because Butch was fired. Kinda like how I knew that multiple coaches would be fired before anyone else spoke of it. Kinda like how I knew Sowells wasn't cutting it at guard. Kinda how I knew that RAC would be back, although most probably thought he would be, but I did say that when I mentioned that the coaches and Lott would be let go. Kinda like I KNOW that in one game, the combination of Leon and K2 ran the wrong route on 19 plays combined. And I Know that K2 took the criticism and Leon didn't. This last one is news. Hasn't been reported and probably won't be. You think I'm making that one up?

Don't start this stuff where I am making things up again. I think it's been proven that I don't make [censored] up. When I am speculating..........I clarify that.

And a new owner would be NUTS to move the team. This is a great situation. Newer stadium w/a fanbase that remains loyal despite a [censored]-poor product.

What bothered me, was the assumption that an English soccer team took money from the Browns... The NFL works on a salary cap and we spent a lot of money on FA last season.... It's not as though we were 60 - 80 million below cap and Lerner spent his money on Aston Villa instead....

Doesn't the Plain Dealer spend any money on fact checkers?????

Maybe this guy should resign...to keep the newspaper management from spending stockholder's money on his employment....

Maybe the fact that the owner of the Cleveland Browns ... the football team we live and die with... can split his attention with a soccer team in the UK is what ticks off some of us.

I do respect the game of soccer and wish I had the opportunity to play the game back in the late 50s and 60s when I was in the 10-20 year age group, but until they play their game with an oblong ball instead of a perfectly round one I don't care to watch.

I know what you're saying.... I thought buying a soccer team seemed like a strange thing to do, but for most of the "Super Rich," a sports franchise is a hobby. A hobby they can make money with, but a hobby all the same...

Being a hobby doesn't mean that they are not serious about it. A hobby just means that it is something of a sideshow for them. Which do you think is more important to the Lerner Family... MBNA or The Cleveland Browns? MBNA of course...it gives them the money to spend on the Browns and Aston Villa.

George Steibrenner may spend most of his time and effort on the Yankees now a days, but a Nationwide Dockworkers Strike, would worry him a lot more than who the Yankees' opening day starting pitcher was... Why... because Shipping is where Geoprge's real money comes from...

You notice the Ford family has Millan in charge of the Lions, not the Ford Motor Car Company.... Bad example...thanks to the NFL TV contracts the Lions do make money, but FoMoCo....Hmmmm...

Just clicking,,

I emailed him and gave him a little food for thought.. He responded and as it turns out, seems to be a decent guy.. I guess he got his fair share of harrassment on the Troy Smith thing.

The thing is, he's not sports guy. Mostly, he writes about government.. He mentioned that he may never write another sports related piece,, so he truly was out of his element.

I actually got the feeling that he felt bad about somethings he said.. Oh well, like I said, probably a decent guy that was just on the wrong topic..

Here's something for everyone:

I'm going to send him a reproachful email. I'd encourage others to do the same. [/color]

The first rule of writing is "write what you know".
The 1st rule of journalism is "get your facts straight."

Columnists and editors at a major newspaper like the PD should have known better.
