Can't play anymore, might as well coach...

The Bulls are reportedly looking at Eric Snow as a candidate for their vacant head coaching job, despite the fact that he has no coaching experience.

Bobcats coach Larry Brown also wants to hire Snow, but first Snow will have to resolve his contract situation -- the Cavs owe him $7.4 million next season and will likely buy out his contract.

I'm sorry, I really like Eric Snow, but I don't let him out of that contract. It is a HUGE trading piece for this season.

Me either. Not a chance in HELL I let Snow walk. He's been a great guy for us but we haven't had this kind of trade flexibility in a LONG time. No way you mortgage a 7.5 million dollar trade asset as a gesture of good will.

Unless Chicago or Charlotte want him enough to swap draft picks.

Realistically, if Chicago really wanted him as a coach we could trade him to the bulls and then they could buy out his contract. I believe that could work? Maybe someone knows the specifics on such a move?

I'd take Ben Gordon or Tyrus Thomas and never look back. Thomas would probably be the more realistic option if the Bulls wanted to dump some payroll (he is due around 18 million the next 3 years) but I also wouldn't be too disappointed with a sign and trade for Gordon.

If they are serious, maybe they will do a trade

Then the new team can buy out his contract and he can coach

In all seriousness though, I have to admit, I was hoping we would keep him and he could coach here.

This does not surprise me at all.

Not sure if you guys heard about this, but Mike Brown even said that Snow drew up the last 2 offensive sets of game 1 vs. Washington a few weeks back.

Its funny, cause they were both great plays that had Boobie playing PG and LeBron OFF THE BALL catching it in motion to make a drive to the rim. Both plays we scored to put the dagger in Washington for game 1.

Just makes you wonder how effective LB would be if we could get him the ball in motion coming off screens more often.

As Barkley always says, the Cavs should find ways to get him the ball in finishing positions rather than just creating positions..

I hope this reporter made that portion up out of stupidity. No way the Cavs let that big of a contract walk for nothing! It's worth its weight in gold (wait, that doesn't make sense....you know what I mean )

If it came to letting him walk, so be it. Snow is the classist guy in the NBA and deserves the chance to be a head coach if it is offered. I would love if we were able to keep him on as a coach, but I don't want to stand in his way of getting a head coaching gig.

Keep in mind if he wants to buy out his contract it dosent mean the Cavs will have to pay 7.4 million to him, they will pay a negotiated price and if he wants to leave I'm sure that price will be low....real low if not the Cavs keep him and he has to stay, or he dosent report or retires to coach and the cavs still make out money wise.

My question is if he walks will this mean the Cavs will have more spending room under the Cap or will his buy-out be a cap hit and not help our money situation ?.....If it does give us more money to spend for FA do we let him walk or make him stay for & use him as part of a trade?

We are WAY over the cap, so getting his contract back would do nothing for us (at least right now). By holding on to him ... he's a $6 million dollar "expiring contract", which are highly valuable trading pieces. Like others have mentioned, if the Bulls want him so bad ... trade us for something.

If he retires ... it basically screws us out of a tradable asset. If Ferry buys him out ... I would start to question him as a GM.

Truthfully, I think he becomes more attractive when he's an expiring contract and a potential buyout player for his remaining one year. Ferry just better not botch the damn thing.

Any team that trades for Snow doesn't want him as a player, I think that's a given. He's a means to dump salary and then free up a roster space. So.....when he says "I'll give you a buyout of only 1.5 million" (or whatever the number may be) to any potential team we might trade with, he becomes that much more valuable. They're not only dumping an outgoing player's salary (that would be coming to us in a trade) but also the incoming player they're receiving as well. It could net a trade partner an extra 4-5 million in cap relief.

For another team, I would guess that's pretty damn attractive.

i think the consensus here is that they want to draft derrick rose with that first pick, unless someone comes up with some ridiculous package that paxson has to take...

which, if that happens, it really backloads the guard position, they have a ton of guards... hinrich, gordon, duhon, hughes, curry, and also shannon brown...

we probably wouldn't get much, but if they want snow, maybe they should trade for him...

gordon is a decent bench guy (he plays zero defense) and i've always been a hinrich guy, but i doubt they would give either of those guys

A huge piece of information that seems to have eluded this thread.

We not only will buyout Eric Snow, but the portion of $$$ that we will buyout we will be claiming under the disability insurance we have on his contract since his knees will never let him see the court again.

Assuming we can get the disability clearance from the doctors and NBA lawyers, that means whatever $$$ we would have to pay him actually comes from the insurance company.

Then, add in the fact that the NBA would take his salary off the cap (because of the disability) and we save even more ($ for $ since we are over the luxury threshold).

So, if we buy him out at $5mil, then we save $10mil ($5mil salary + $5mil luxury tax).

A trading chip is nice, but without him we still have ~$23mil in trading chips (expiring contracts). Saving a straight $10mil means we can sign someone at the full midlevel exception if we want to (~$5mil/season).

Adding a link to the BW story that explains this a bit more thoroughly than I did in this post:

Also, even before the lottery fallout, Miami and Chicago were talking about a trade involving Hinrich, so they may draft Rose and ship Hinrich to South Beach (for Haslem maybe?)

"We" don't save anything. Dan Gilbert would save some cash, but *we* would still be well over the salary cap. Or we could just trade him, and Gilbert would save that same $10 million.

We can already sign somebody at the midlevel exception if we really want to ... it would just cost Gilbert $10 million more. I don't know about you, but I'm not sure we're going to get much value signing a guy for the MLE. I'd think we'd be much better off using that $5 million expiring contract in addition to the others to bring someone in of much higher value.

"Or we could just trade him, and Gilbert would save that same $10 million"

That's not how NBA trades work. You have to be within 125% salary outgoing salary values when making trades over the cap, so Gilbert couldn't possibly save $10million by trading Eric Snow. Plus, most teams trading for expiring deals are trying to save $$$ themselves.

"I'd think we'd be much better off using that $5 million expiring contract in addition to the others to bring someone in of much higher value."

I agree that there are not a whole bunch of good MLE candidates this year (Josh Childress is probably the best..no thanks). But, what Gilbert has shown is that he is willing to put $$ back into the team (the Finals run last year was a reason cited for being allowed to increase salary this year).

So, here's an alternate method. We take the $10million saved from Eric Snow. Then, we use the $23mil in expiring deals to acquire better players and take on an additional 25% salary in doing so. That works out to just over $28million of incoming salaries. With the luxury tax, that works out to $10million. Gilbert closes the books as a wash and we get better players. Done.

Not really, Hughes and brown are 2 guards, Duhon i believe is an UFA, Gordon has been talked about in trades for a few years now, drafting Rose will now seal the deal on either Gordon or Hinrich leaving. Gordon will be much easier to ship, So Hinrich and Rose can share PG duties until Rose is comfortable to take over.

and come on, Curry?

The numbers that have been thrown out are a little off....

here's what we have in terms of expiring contracts (keep in mind we shipped off a few in the Chicago/Seattle deal):

Wally Sczerbiak - 13 Million
Eric Snow - 7.3 Million
Damon Jones - 4.5 Million

Some might consider Andy an expiring deal (player option) but there's not a chance in hell he leaves 6.2+ million on the table IMO. A one dimensional player is not going to command that in FA, especially with how few teams are even under the cap.

So.....with Snow we have 25 million. Without him we have 18. When discussiing trades for an all-star player, that extra 7 million of cap relief is HUGE. Why? Because when a superstar is dealt, a bad contract usually comes with them....thus making it THAT much more important to have as much expiring money as possible.

I love Eric and I'm sure the organization does too but everyone involved needs to realize that keeping him (and not buying him out) is the best thing for the team. He'll have plenty of opportunities to land coaching gigs and the luxury tax relief we would get back from a buyout is just water under the bridge in my opinion. It doesn't help the team at all.

May be a stupid question but I thought he was retiring because of his knee problems? They said his knees have barely any cartiledge in them and it is bone on bone.

How can we buy him out or even trade him when he is going to retire? Don't make sense.

he's not going to retire with all that money sitting on the table for '08-'09

if there is a buyout, the cavs, and eric snow will come to a happy medium, probably the 4-5m range...

i've always been a fan of snow, people on this board rode the guy up and down, but he's always been a true pro... he was a canton bulldog, and he was most definitely a bulldog on the court... i wish we would have had him when he was younger...

i'd love to see him hired as an assistant to mike brown, screw the bulls.

but hey, if the bulls want him as their head coach, more power to him, those opportunities don't come up often

If he can't play because of injury how can he collect money for 08-09? Part of his contract is that he plays those years correct? Honest question.

I'd love to see Snow get a head coaching job, even if it is with the Bulls. The guy has been a class act.

Its guaranteed money, just like baseball contracts. As long as he doesn't retire, he gets paid what he signed for. He'll ask for a deal to let him out of the contract. If he wants a coaching job, he may even take a little less. This is just the first time since we've acquired him that Eric Snow has had trade value. I'm not arguing that he isn't a good guy, its just that he is valuable to the Cavs in a deal for the first time since they acquired him.

to be honest the bulls are more interested in mark jackson and avery johnson (jeff van gundy is also rumored)

i hope mark jackson doesn't go, as well as van gundy, those 2 with breen are the best nba commentating crew around, great chemistry with those 3...

It would be similar to the Brad Daugherty situation. He last played in 93-94, but didn't retire until after the 95-96 season, but still got paid for those final 2 seasons despite not playing...

Allright that clears it up a bit. I definately won't deny that I have almost zero knowledge about how the NBA works on the buisness side of things.

It just seems awkward that he has value being as he can't play. I know about the whole expiring contract thing but didn't think it would mean much if he couldn't play. That and how he could even remain on a team when his career as a player is over.

shoot, the orioles were paying albert belle years after he couldn't play... the yankees are still paying carl pavano...

eric snow has value, even if he can't play... the expiring deals mean a lot to some teams, not all... just teams that aren't really going anywhere, and have the future in mind more than the current situation...

that's the only reason kwame brown went to memphis...

not to mention, that he could serve as a pretty good mentor for young players.. i thought he has really rubbed off well on lebron...

it will be sad to see him go, because he will probably either be traded or bought out, but if it means this team getting a step closer to a championship, i'm all for it, as are most of us...

Smith is a FA this year (like Boobie), so he's technically not an expiring contract in terms of trade possibilities. That's what I was referring to.

I agree we need to resign him though. Thought he was a great addition and a very solid bench contributor.

Exactly !.... If Snow , who is at the end of his career , actually has potential as a coach why wouldn't we want to keep him in the organization as a coach ?....

noticed your site had a blank spot for Smith's salary next year. So I went searching for some more evidence.

here's a blurb from this site :

Szczerbiak ($13 mil-lion), Eric Snow ($7.3 million) and Damon Jones ($4.5 million) all have expiring contracts in 2008-2009, which makes them unbelieva-bly attractive commodi-ties to teams looking to shed salary. Add in the modest deals of non-core players Anderson Varejao ($5.8 million), Smith ($5.2 million) and Pavlovic ($4.5 million), and the number of sign-and-trades Cleveland can pull off are limitless.

I think I remember reading somewhere around the time of the trade that the Bulls either had a club option or signed an extention to make it a three year deal. I remember this being a point of contention back in February because most people knew Joe signed a 2-year contract in 2007 ... but quite a few places have listed him as having a three year contract.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure. Hoopshype has been pretty accurate on salaries in the past but they can always be wrong. I didn't really look in to all that much so he could have signed a new deal before he left Chicago.

This is also saying he's expiring....

http://content.usatoday.com/sports/baske...&player=365

Signed a 6 year deal before the 01-02 season. Not saying it was right but I was fairly certain they said he was in the final year of his contract when we got him from Chicago.

As I'm looking through some stuff about him some places say he signed a 1 year deal at the full MLE and others are saying he signed a 2 year deal at 4.75 mil per. Not sure which one it is but I'd prefer we had him for another season, without having to worry about hammering out a contract. Saves our MLE for another player.

That sounds right. I think Chicago signed him as a free agent in 2007. He either got a 2 or 3 year contract.

Well it's definitly NOT a one year contract, or he'd be a free agent this year.

Most things I've read said he signed a 2-year contract with Chicago in '07, but terms were not disclosed. Donno if that includes a team option or anything.

Try Mike Gorman, Tommy Heinson, and Bob Cousey. Nothing better than the Celtic's commentators in all sports, while very biased, we're talking about two legends that know their team very well and the great Mike Gorman who calls the best play-by-play and meshes with Tommy like peas and carrots. Bet your Cavs players wish that they could recieve a Tommy Point!

In fact, looking back on the past two seasons before this one Delonte West prob got the most Tommy Points out of everyone. He's all about hustle and while I loved seeing Wally go (he sucks), Delonte was my fav. I did like watching him and Rondo matchup.

PS: ex-cav and UConn, the greatest College team in the land, standout (my mom's fav college player ever) Donny Marshall is a Celtics commentator for the away games (Tommy doesn't like making the trip anymore) and he's very good as well

BW lists Joe Smith as an expiring deal too...and he generally doesn't write things that come out as false.

Also, as far as Andy is concerned.

Either teams will view him as an expiring contract (~$6mil) or they will view him as a young defensive PF/C player at a reasonable contract (if he somehow exercises his option). I will bet Memphis wishes it offered AV the $7mil/year that it ended up giving Darko.

Remember, the entire reason AV signed with Charlotte was to force the Cavs to give him the player-option on the 3rd year instead of it being a 3 year contract. Not opting out would be admitting defeat, and we all saw how stubborn he can be this season with his holdout.

He's still playing? Ok that's a shock. I didn't see or hear about him all year. Anyway, surprise aside, let's talk trade and he's part of it.
