From the Browns site:

Quote:

Anderson accepts team MVP award
Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
05.20.2008
AKRON - At 6-foot-6, Derek Anderson knows the feeling of standing above a crowd.

Being the toast of the town, though, is still a little bit new. But that's just one reason Anderson had to watch his step Monday night at the annual Akron Browns Backers Banquet.

Everywhere he turned, fans were waiting. He's learning that's what happens when you're not only the Browns' quarterback, but the team's most valuable player. He picked up that award, as voted by the Cleveland chapter of the Pro Football Writer's Association, at the Akron banquet.

"I just told my wife that a year ago Derek could have walked in here and nobody would have known who he was," quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer said. "It's a credit to him and the work that he's done. He's worked his tail off."

A year ago at this time, Anderson was the Browns' backup and wouldn't have been busy on a May Monday night. Now, he's a Pro Bowler with a new contract and a growing fan club, but Scherer said Anderson's hard work has continued this offseason.

"The only difference," Scherer said, "is that now he gets invited to more golf tournaments."

Scherer, head coach Romeo Crennel and assistants Chris Caminiti and Anthony Lynn were part of the group honored at the Akron banquet. Phil Dawson was presented with the PFWA's "Good Guy" Award, and the 2007 Cleveland Browns Legends class was also honored.

Anderson admitted the whole rock-star experience is new, saying "I should have just worn my jeans and t-shirt and tried to slide right in. I tried to sneak in but it didn't work."

The fun lasted for just over two hours Monday night as an overflow crowd at Tangier's restaurant saluted the Browns' players and coaches in attendance for their work in 2007. There was plenty of optimism for 2008, too, and Anderson knew he'd better head north before it got too late.

The Browns will be back on the practice field Tuesday morning.

"Derek came in and won 10 for us," Crennel said. "Hopefully he can continue to do that. If he can win 10 this year, I think we have a pretty good chance."

TUCKER UPDATE - Crennel said Ryan Tucker is resting at home after hip surgery that Crennel said will keep Tucker sidelined "through the start of training camp." He was injured during practice last week.

"We still have the recovery period to go through, but I know Ryan will do everything he can to come back," Crennel said.

ON DUTY - Crennel said all the rookies have reported and should be on the field this week for OTA practices except undrafted rookie defensive back Gerard Lawson, a former teammate of Anderson's at Oregon State. Lawson can't report until the semester ends at Oregon State.

So I guess that means he sucks right

What does Anderson have to do with Quinn? I don't know about you, but I'm sick of people telling me to read every post on this board to find a topic that has nothing to do with the other.

This should be its own topic.

Haven't you been paying attention? EVERY thread about one of our QBs ends up in the same 'deadbate' and I didn't want to start another one by posting this article in it's own thread. The Quinn thread had evolved into another BQ vs. DA debate, as will this. If you want it to be on its own, fine. I have no problem with that. But just wait and see what happens.

May as well post this one here as well then...

Browns' Derek Anderson keeps grinning as the pressure grows
Tuesday, May 20, 2008
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

AKRON The Browns are looking for consistency from Derek Anderson.

Off the field, he's as consistent as can be. His amused nonchalance never changes.

No one was surprised Monday night at the way he answered a question relating to the season opener, Browns vs. Cowboys.

Does he know Tony Romo?

"I met him at the Pro Bowl. A real nice guy."

Does he know Jessica Simpson, Romo's girlfriend?

"I met her at the Pro Bowl. She was very nice."

He didn't slobber over the "very." There was just enough inflection to make a small crowd laugh.

As the night wore on, the crowd got bigger at the annual Akron Browns Backers dinner. Anderson was the star of the show.

He said he should have tried to "sneak in," wearing gym shoes and a T-shirt. Like that was going to happen with one of the tallest quarterbacks in the NFL, on one of the hottest teams.

Unless something unforeseen happens, one of the biggest Week 1 games in the NFL will pit Cleveland against Dallas.

In this corner, Romo, an unexpected star who was undrafted out of Eastern Illinois in 2003.

In that corner, Anderson, likewise a surprise who was cut by the team that drafted him, Baltimore.

Yes, Anderson has thought about their similar paths to the spotlight.

"He's the same way. ... He didn't just show up," Anderson said. "He did a lot of work. He put a lot of effort into things."

Both Anderson and Romo must clean up some things if they are to elevate their teams to the next level.

Both threw 19 interceptions in 2007. Anderson struggled in losses that kept the Browns out of the playoffs. Romo faltered against the Giants in the playoffs.

Romo has this on Anderson: He beat him 4,211-3,787 in passing yards, 64.4-56.5 in completion percentage and 36-29 in touchdown passes.

Anderson has this: He went 10-5 in his first real shot as an NFL starter.

The ride could end swiftly, with Brady Quinn behind him, but if Anderson plays well and wins, well ... Tom Brady is a former sixth-round pick, too.

It's different being the acknowledged starter as opposed to competing with Charlie Frye and wondering about a rookie Round 1 pick, Quinn.

"The first day of practice ... it was kind of fun," Anderson said. "Obviously, with Donté (Stallworth) and some of the other new guys, the wheels are turning, but for me it's nice to go out and just play."

Before rejoining the team for offseason conditioning last month, Anderson got away to his hometown, Scappoose, Ore.

"There," he said, "I just disappear and nobody finds me."

Hundreds attended Monday's event. Every one of them looked for Anderson.

"I try to tell people at home ... people here are pretty fanatical about the game," he said.

It has become evident what his approach to the limelight is. Keep it light.

This is true. But there have been other non-QB issues that people have posted and have received the same feedback. This is another thread blah, blah, blah.....

Hate is a strong word,, I prefer distrust. But what's the difference, the article is about Anderson... not the reporters.. all they did was vote for him.

And yes, I agree it's an honor.

Is it any wonder to any of you why the players really like DA? He is very humble, but has a dry wit. He's a hard worker, but is just an every day kind of guy.

This thread.........like the Edwards thread..........won't get a lot of play. People will pretend like these things don't exist, and hopefully will just go away.

Gotta love the credibility of some folks...........*L*

There are those that don't see it that way. I, however do.

As Vers said a couple of posts up, he's just a humble, hardworking guy.

He just finished his first year as a starter.. I can't imagine how anyone could possibly think he's a finished product and will get no better.. that baffles me to know end.

and you have to remember, I'm no Anderson supporter or basher.. same with Quinn.. I am neither a basher or supporter of his either. I'm just a Browns fan and it just doesn't matter to me anymore who the QB is. I just wanna win. Whoever gets us wins,, that's my guy...

Seems to be a stand alone thread rather then stuck in the thread about the back-up qb.

I think he was named MVP awhile ago, but they honored him the other day. I'm not sure about that, though.

I was actually thinking the MVP was going to Joe Thomas...but he does not play a high role in the offense as the QB...guess it makes sense!

Honestly, that wouldn't have been a bad choice either.. same could be said for Braylon Edwards as well.

As for Thomas, you won't get an argument from me had he been named as the MVP. But I think that would have been a hard sell.. JMO.. not knocking JT at all here.

I think a big part of it is when a player really emerges like DA did. Before the season started, I don't think many could have envisioned him doing what he did where as with the others, I don't think their production was nearly as unexpected.

Yeah, I see that as being the case also Peen.. DA's emergence took the entire league by surprise. Seems as if the only person that wasn't surprised was DA himself.. or maybe Savage also.

Good for him. It must be some whirlwind for this guy who probably thought he might not even get on the field at the beginning of last year to get the MVP vote and have a season like that. He's got to feel great.

Okay. That's what I had originally intended to do actually. But as I said, I put it in the already existing QB thread because I didn't want to create a new QB "deadbate" thread. Whatever, back to the subject at hand... Congrats to DA. I think he definitely deserves the award. He did what no one, not even our own FO, expected him to do. As Phil said, "he saved all our jobs."

I agree Peen. I was fortunate to be able to get to all but a handful of last summer's TC practices and, quite honestly, I thought we were in real trouble at QB. NONE of the guys (Frye, Anderson, Quinn or Dorsey) had really emerged and played well in practice (and we all saw the pre-season games... ). They generally had decent practices, bad practices or downright U-G-L-Y practices. It didn't look good at all based on what I saw (and heard) on the practice fields.

Consequently, DA's success REALLY took me by surprise. I think we all knew Jamal could get it going if the OL was as improved as we thought it would be. I was also confident that Braylon and KW could have HUGE seasons if only one of the "stiffs" I saw in TC could raise their performance. Well, DA did it in a big way and, IMO, he was a no-brainer choice for our MVP last season.

I can't wait to see if he can build on what he was able to do in 2007.

Wow. I didn't expect all the recognition and kind comments. I was wrong about this. Kudos to you all.

I think the MVP could have went to several players. If I remember correctly, the media struggled w/the decision. In addition to K2, Thomas, Lewis, and Edwards.....I also heard Cribbs named mentioned.

I also believe that it's nice for the Browns that there were so many viable contestants. It wasn't a one-man team. DA did not do it alone. There were multiple players on offense that made this team tick. That bodes well for our future. The only negative is that not one defensive player was considered.

It's would be hard to argue with any of those listed as MVP. It's refreshing to have such a struggle to pick one, though they're are members of the media so struggling to know anything isn't that surprising

Congrats to DA. As others have said, he is humble and personable. He's also a great story....from late round draft pick and cut to a starter that put up some great numbers.

Game 1 was so bad....with the four? penalties on our first punt hahahaha, to Frye having a total mental meltdown I thought it would take a while for the team to come back from that funk.

Then Game 2 comes out of nowhere and DA puts up 51 and really set our team back to an equillibrium. IMO that was the biggest game of the year for us.

I give DA props for what he did this year. Was he the best player on the team? Not close. But he did save the psyche of the team and got us on a roll mentally.

Thomas
Lewis
Edwards

would be my top 3. But DA is not totally undeserving.

Maybe the most important comment on this thread... 4 years ago, It could NOT have even been thought, much less said outloud..

And even then, the only guy that may have deserved it was Dawson..... Man that ain't saying much.
