Make sure you wear a helmet and be careful. Crotch rockets are dangerous. I guess no more dangerous than other bikes, but still, use caution when riding.

Personally, I don't like the things---saw to many friends get killed and injured on 'em.

How about a Huffy?

Get the little bell, maybe some streamers for the handles. Sweet.

Although if you don't want a death trap, you might want to avoid the streamers. You might get your ass kicked.

Well thats a good place to start. Do you have any background riding dirt bikes or anything like that? That will help with the basics.

Honestly if you want a bike to commute on, you may want to stay away from the sport bikes. They are not comfortable for any type of distance and they are treacherous in any type of adverse weather. If you want comfort and good gas mileage look at a mid size cruiser. Or if you want economy go with a late 80s mid cruiser. I personally have a big cruiser but as fare as gas mileage it is not that great comparitively.

If you have any questions about mechanical issues feel free to PM me . I have dabbled in bike building an restorations.

Rider safety courses are a good thing, especially if you've never ridden before.
I've been riding for 29 years and have never owned anything but Harleys so I can't give you a lot of advice about the bikes your interested in except a lot of the crotch rockets aren't built for comfort.

1. As other's have said, a Rider's Safety Course is always good. I took one here in Florida when I decided to get a motorcycle endorsement again. It's easier to take the road course at the class after spending a few days on the small 250's they use, than to take it at the DMV. Alot less nerve racking as well.

2. Honda CBR is a good bike, but as King, I think, said, they can get uncomfortable on longer rides due to the semi hunched over position. CBR is not as bad as say the Ninja and such in that aspect, but it can still be uncomfortable, especially after a hard day at work.

I've owned several crotch rockets, from cbrs, ninja and gsxr's. I raced gsxr 750's for awhile and my last sport bike was a 2002 hayabusa..awesome bike, since then i go for the cruisers.. crotch rockets are good for around town, but 60 miles one way will be brutal. I drove my gsxr-750 from tennessee to ohio and damn near killed me.. for sporty cruiser styles, the one GM posted is a very nice bike, buddy has one.. very comfortable and nice power. I have a vstar 1100 awesome bike, but if i was you just starting out and for optimal fuel mileage, stick with something 650-800. the boulevard that GM posted is an 800. my buddy is a short mexican and he handles it fine

I like the Yamaha V Star... Nice mid sized bike...Plenty of power and much more comfortable to ride.. You'll get 50-55 miles to the gal. And they look good too...

I just got a Kawasaki Mean Streak. It might suit what you said you want. It's basically a sport cruiser. It's my first bike...I was a little worried about learning to ride on a big bike, but it's been really forgiving overall.

He could have been like some other posters and made mean nasty disparaging remarks about somebody, then put a smiley beside it because... that makes it ok.

Hey Psyborg what ya get the 1600..I was thinking more around the 650 size for a new rider. He'll get good mpg. and it's a solid cruiser. I rode one for yrs. And the new 650 V star is a sharp bike when she's all decked out..

First, think about what you want the bike for. If this is going to be a commuter bike, I would suggest something comfortable in the cruiser family.

If you have an interest in 'racing' and you think you may want to do some track days, then get a sport bike. You can still commute on one, but it won't be comfortable. If you do get a sportbike, I would take it easy on the public roads and highways. Save it for the track.

Always wear a helmet even if the law says you don't have to. I shake my head whenever I return to Cleveland and see guys on sportbikes zipping down the interstate at over 100 mph with no helmet.

Buy a good leather jacket and good gloves. Wear heavy duty jeans as well. If you wipe out, you'd sure like to avoid road rash. If you are going to take the bike to the track, get a good one piece suit and good riding boots.

Take the driver safety course, especially if you've never ridden before.

Get a loud pipe for any bike you get. Bikes are sometimes not easily visible by other drivers. If you can be audible, it will help.

Drive defensively.

Have fun.

I've owned several sport bikes in the past. I've totaled two of them. One was my fault, one was the somebody else's. The one that was my fault I took a corner too hot and high-sided the bike. Fortunately, no other traffic was coming because I got thrown into that lane. I was riding way past my capabilities at the time and got ahead of myself. Fortunately, I was wearing the proper gear.

The other time I was riding pretty defensively. Somebody changed lanes right in front of me at the last minute, and I went right into the back of their SUV. Fortunately, it was at low speeds. Again, I was wearing the proper gear...no injuries...walked away.

Moral of the story ... bikes are dangerous even if you aren't. Be careful. But enjoy it too. Love the first feeling of cracking the throttle on a beautiful day. But again, be careful and be aware of your surroundings.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Thats one of things I thought about when I recomended that bike. Not to expensive, not bad looking, low to the ground and easy to handle, enough power but not to much power. Somebody who never rode before does not need to start out on a crotch rocket, or an 1800CC fully dressed out.

If you want a bike to have a bike - get one. Others have mentioned makes and models, etc.

If you want a bike to save gas, you will save money on gas, but, since you live in ohio, it will only mean saving gas for 6 to 8 months per year. Factor in the cost of the bike, the insurance for the bike, and yoy may realize that you aren't saving much. In fact, if you have to take out a loan, you may realize that saving gas money by getting a bike is actually going to end up costing you MORE (with the bike payment, interest, and insurance).

LIke I said, if you want a bike cause you want one - get one. If you want one to save gas - think again cause 60 mpg with a $200 monthly payment to boot isn't going to save you any coin anytime soon if you get 30 mpg out of your car.

Just something to think about.

Yep...1600. I was a bit nervous that it'd be too much for me, but it really rides nice. But I must admit that I'm not a small guy, so a big bike maybe more necessary for me

Your definately going to want to get something in the 600 range. It's a smaller bike, easier to control and has just enough power for what your looking for.

Have you ever rode a motorcycle before? If not I would highly suggest you taking a motorcycle saftey course. Chrotch rockets are alot different to ride than any normal bike.

I've never been on a crotch rocket....i have driven bikes before...and i'm decent at it...but i am not confident nuf to jus drive one off the lot if i had to....i am planning on taking the saftey course for sure! i found out if i do it through the BMV here its like 25bucks and i don't have to take my practical test

Riding a crotch rocket is ALOT different than a cruiser. With a crotch rocket you tend to have to lean more into a turn shifting the weight of the bike rather than just basically turning the handlebars. While it's not exactly hard it does take a bit to get used to. Not to metion the back pain your going to be experiencing riding 57 miles in a hunched over position.

I myself have never had a bike yet but I have grown up around and rode motorcycles throughout my life. One reason I haven't owned my own bike is because I've found out that I tend to have more balls then brains. My brother, his friends and some of my friends all have had crotch rockets that I have rode a bunch of times growing up and my dad has had Harley's and choppers as long as I can remember.

I've never had a bike. I've ridden them some. I've never had one because of my dad. He's worked at a hospital for as long as I've been alive (39 years). He always told me "if you see one person come into the e.r. from a bike accident, you'll know why I don't want you to have one".

I've never seen a person going into e.r. from a bike accident. Cause I don't work there. But it stuck with me. And, I might add, it doesn't matter how good of a rider you are - it's the other person you have to worry about. Same as with cars, but to a lesser extent due to the safety of cars over bikes.

I have always wanted one, and do to this day. The sound of a Harley draws me in........The wind in my face.......

One of my best friends hit a deer last fall. On his bike. 2 in the afternoon. 35 mph. He was lucky, with just a broken wrist and broken arm. 3 surgeries and weeks off work fixed him right up.
