I honestly didn't know this even existed. I've been reading about it and it attacks the body's cells a lot like HIV in humans. But it only gets transferred through bites and scratches.
Noodle was a stray and my sister and I saved him. He was the sweetest cat ever. I'm proud of my little sister for how she handled it... instead of putting the neighbor cats at risk if by some chance he got out... she took him to a shelter. It's not easy, but what can you do? I just wish there was a cure... or that somebody cared about him enough to give him a home earlier in life.

I suppose I'm just wondering if anyone else knows about this. The vet said either put him down right there or take him away (where he'll probably eventually be put down anyway.)
Is/was there something else we could have done? There is still time to get him back if so.

That sux. My first question would be, is it possible for it to tranfer to humans?

No, not at all. I was a little weirded out by the diagnosis at first, but it's species specific. It's just shocking. We knew he was old and there was something wrong, but AIDS??? Who would have thought that?

I had no idea that cats could get AIDS. Sorry to hear about it OnB.

Nothing you can do, to my knowledge.

About a year ago, we took in a stray kitten. I scheduled an appointment to have her fixed at the vet. I told my girlfriend "I think we're a little late. She's looking pretty chubby" When I took her in, they said she was pregnant. I told them to abort the kittens (we already had 8 cats) and have her fixed when done. They told me "she'll be ready at about 2pm. We'll call you before then if there's any issues".

At 1:55pm I'm getting ready to call the vet when the phone rings. It's the vet and I'm thinking they are calling to tell me she's ready to come pick up. But...NO, they call me to tell me she tested positive for FIV. Well, with 8 other cats we had to put her down.

It was devastating. My girlfriend cried for a week and a half. I was NOT happy with the vet. They could've called at about 10am to let us know but they let us think everything was alright and then hit us with the news right when she's supposed to be ready to get picked up.

If they are diagnosed with this, you pretty much have to put them down if you have other cats. They pass it through bites and saliva at food dishes.

Sorry for the loss. Pets, to me, are like family members and it hurts to lose one.

EDIT: Our vet told us it could be passed at the food dish although this link says nothing about it...

Really? I guess there are three stages. I don't know how bad he was, but from what she said I got the feeling the vet was leaving some options out.

I don't know, I had always heard that when a cat gets AIDS, it isn't as serious of a condition as it is with humans.

The vet would know best, though...

I can't believe they did that either. That's pretty harsh.

Here's a pic of the old Noodle head, while I'm thinking about it.
