Savage seeing fruits of his labor
Thursday, May 29, 2008
BY JOE FROLLO

UNIONTOWN As OTAs wrap up this week in Berea, Phil Savage remembers the first time he watched the Cleveland Browns trot out for practice.

Just days after being named Browns general manager in January 2005, Savage stood next to T.J. McCreight, who came to Cleveland from Baltimore with Savage.

"After everyone filed out, T.J. leaned over and asked, 'Is that it?' " Savage said Wednesday during the Northeast Ohio Celebrity Luncheon Club meeting. "I said, 'Yep, T.J. The varsity ain't coming out after them.' "

A little more than three years later, Savage likes his roster a whole lot better.

"When I first got here and looked at what we had, I told someone I thought our long-snapper (Ryan Pontibrand) was about the best player at his specific skill," Savage told about 100 people at Prestwick Country Club during an event to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs. "Now, we look like a real NFL football team."

Savage ran down the Browns roster for the lunch crowd, saying quarterback Brady Quinn continues to impress every day, but incumbent starter Derek Anderson "is worth us investing another year to see how far he can go."

Savage thinks the the team will be forced to cut some talented players as the numbers play out. That's a vast difference from 2005.

"For the Browns not to be ranked in the bottom three (in Vegas odds) at a zillion to one is a good thing," Savage said. "If we succeed during this season and make it to the playoffs ... we've got the kind of playmakers who can get us over the top."

Whether that will include former All-Pro lineman LeCharles Bentley will be found out June 9, when Bentley comes in for tests.

EXPECTS DEFENSIVE IMPACT

But Savage wasn't just talking about the team's offense, where the Browns averaged 26.3 points during the final 15 games of a 10-6 season. The addition of defensive linemen Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers could create opportunities for the players behind them in the same way adding linemen Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach did for the offense.

Rookie linebacker Beau Bell will be looked upon to make teams think about running inside.

"In the past, when we'd go to hit someone in the hole, guys would fall forward for a first down," Savage said. "Hopefully, Beau gives us some knock-back ability."

Success from the front seven will allow a secondary that has lost Daven Holly to injury and Leigh Bodden to the Rogers trade to catch up.

That starts, though, with finding players to take their places.

"It's a matter of us going out and finding the right people," Savage said. "Whether through free agency or talking with teams about players that maybe didn't work out for them but might with us."

One player Savage said not to expect in an orange helmet is former McKinley High School and Ohio State star Mike Doss.

"We feel pretty good about our safety position right now," Savage said. "(Doss) is more of a down-in-the-box safety, not a back in coverage guy. Brodney Pool already does that for us."

I really hate that he keeps bringing this up.

Yeah I know you are a better evaluator than Savage...you were wrong about BE and it is possible you are wrong about Pool. Among many other things as well.

I wasn't WRONG about BE. I always said he had a world of talent and he was a big play guy. I also said he was a head case and he was. He had a good year last year and kept his mouth shut. But, his book isn't written yet. But, I was never wrong. In fact, I was more right than anyone on here.

And keep blasting. This is going to be soooooo much fun.

It will be nice to have some closer on this issue....either way, my hope is for him to be a Brown, but if not, lets move on.

Vers, I think the rest of that quote is just as important.

The way I took this is that Doss and Pool are similar players so it does not make sense to bring him in. Isn't the thing you dislike most about Pool the fact that he is poor in coverage? The way I read that paragraph tells me Savage agrees with you.

JMO of course.

Everyone was wrong about Edwards, including managment. It's rumored that they tried to trade him in a trade up deal to get Russell.

Savage DID say that WR was a position that depended a lot on QB and O-Line play, as WRs are third in line, Hike, Throw, Catch................

I didn't give up on him last year, especially since I knew that he was recovering from ACL his 2nd year and going into his third. I never called him Leon, and his behavior was never a huge issue for me. He got into an argument with the O-Line, THEY SUCKED! I guess he got into arguments with coaches and I do remember Vers saying that he told a coach to, "F-Off" although that wasn't published info. But yeah, headcase or not he is a big piece of our puzzle. He'll never catch the ball like Torry Holt, but he offers big play ability and he manages to get open. He's our big play reciever and he's a tough, physical player.

Everyone seemed to give up on him and decided he'd never be that good. Some people wanted us to trade him. People forgot they were talking about a guy who was in his 2nd year, came back early and risked himself to play, and was going into his third (the year where people say it clicks for WRs)

So yeah, while I didn't think he'd be as good as he was, he was my sleeper fantasy WR and I still thought he was a good player, very criticized and underappreciated, and so I will say I was righter than most of you, haha.

I came up w/the nickname Leon. But, I don't want people telling lies about what I said.

I never doubted his ability and I always gave him credit for what he could do. I always said he was a big play WR. I always said he was a threat. I always said he was big, strong, and had pretty good speed. I always said he would drop a lot of balls, but I could live w/it because of his big play ability.

Where I knocked him.........and I will stand by this to the end..........was he was a headcase. He was a team cancer. He disrespected teammates and coaches a ton. He didn't work hard. He was late a lot. He didn't pay attention and didn't know all the plays. He didn't run good routes and didn't even try to. I stand by those comments. I was not wrong about that.

There are people on here who will tell you that I do admit when I am wrong. I was not wrong about BE.

Oh.........and like I said.........let's see how he reacts when he isn't getting the ball enough and we are losing. Wanna bet it goes as smooth as last year? LOL

Btw.............is he still doing all that charity work this year? Haven't heard anything......

Pool has better size for the position and better recovery speed.
Doss I think is more of a true ‘in the Box’ type of Safety, because he is more aggressive and instinctual against the run.

Pool might just surprise us all this year. Last year is a feather in his hat, because of the experience he should have gained. a lot of mistakes LOL….yes but, also a lot of lessons to be learned from film study if he applies himself to it.
His potential says he should be a complete Safety, but to this point his production has equaled
No more then an ‘in the Box’ type of player and I think this is what Phil Savage meant by the statement.

One thing I know for sure is this year there will be no excuses taken.

Not trying to start something, Vers, as we have had great discussions so take this the way it's intended and not as an attack

When you're defending DA, and I don't disagree with your points in that, you have stated that Savage and RAC knows more than we do and that we should trust them. Yet, when they discuss the safety situation, you disagree with them totally. I'm not sure I see the difference. If we have to trust their judgement at QB, we have to trust their decisions at ALL positions. They must see something they like in Poole, just as they do in DA. See what I'm trying to say? Just trying to calm your feels about the safety situation

That is a fair question and I knew it would come up.

I think Pool sucks. You guys think DA sucks. The difference is that DA has competition in BQ. Who the hell on the roster is going to compete w/Pool? DA is beating out someone who is legitimate. Pool isn't.

Now..........one could argue that the Browns didn't bring in anyone to challenge Pool because they believe in his skills. I can accept that as a valid argument. I also could argue that they only could upgrade so many positions per year and they didn't get to FS this year.

Not saying I am right, Coach. But, I think you know that I know the game and damn man..........this cat stands around more than any FS I have EVER seen. I have heard they like his potential. I heard they love his size and athleticism and are miffed why he doesn't react better. I have also heard it is a concern. You can believe that or not.

I was hoping they would replace him, but like you said..........they know more about it than me, and perhaps I am wrong. It won't be the first time....afterall..........I used to think DA sucked.

I thnk DA sucks? C'mon, bud, you know better than that. I understand you probaably didn't mean me, but everyone else. I have concerns about him, but wouldn't say he sucks. He has holes in his game. That doesn't mean I think he sucks or can't improve.

The rest of what you said is all valid. I was just trying to relieve your blood pressure

This statement was a little surprising. I'm not a Doss fan,but who says Pool stays healthy all year? Will the likes of Sorensen and Adams be adequate if Pool goes down?

j/c bc of the section you highlighted...

wasn't pool being used as cb just a couple seasons ago? why would he be a 'down in the box type' if he was being used in coverage as a cb. wouldn't that translate over into being adequate at coverage from the safety spot? that one had me confused

Pool was used as a cb a couple of times, such as when he covered Keyshawn Johnson in the Carolina game. KG was more like a TE than anything else. Pool was never asked to cover WRs who could run.

Pool also played in quite a bit of nickel and dime packages. He really never had to run and cover. He is terrible in space. He has ZERO instincts and is very slow to react. I think he is the worst FS I have seen in a Brown's uniform.

I do think he has a lot of athleticism and perhaps he may develop. I don't know the guy and maybe he will get it. The Browns haven't given up on him and perhaps I am wrong.

But........what that quote means is that Pool isn't very good in deep coverage and is better closer to the LOS, as is Doss...........so bringing Doss in would be stupid.

Coverage as a safety and a CB are two different things IMO. Not sure what he was asked to do at CB but i think it was more or less a nickel back and he was playing primarily man. "Cover this guy" and the complex zones required by NFL safeties are two different animals.

He has all the physical attributes, and is still only 23. He can still pull it together with hard work, but will never be a dominant safety because of his lack of instincts IMO, you cant teach that.

On a different note, I thought Jones was much better up in the box where he could make plays with Russell playing back. JMHO..

Very true statement and this killed our defense last year. Additionally, I believe that the linebackers had to drop a lot and cover the intermediate part of the field between the hashes................this hurt our run defense and our pass rush. All because of one player.

I am not defending other players, but Pool...............it is my belief that he really compromised our defense last year..............and he will again.......this year. Provided that he doesn't improve. Hopefully.......it clicks this year.

Vers, I believe you ... I really do. You study the game in a way that many on here do not. I recall you saying you were at live games focusing primarily on Pool for several plays.

But I can't help but believe that Savage and Co. either see it differently or just don't think it's as bad as you make it out to be. I only say that because Savage has shown an incredible knack for identifying weaknesses and fixing them. And if he can't find a fix for a weakness, he will create competition at that position.

He has done neither in the case of Pool.

It sometimes makes me wonder if you are being a little harsh. Although, I also believe there is merit to what you say. Honestly, I don't know what to think about Pool.

I'm with you. In Pool I see a guy who has really struggled in pass protection. But I also see a very athletic guy with great size. He is a very sound tackler. He was willing to play corner for a while and he did it pretty well. He's one of the nicest players I've ever meat at training camp. He's only 23 years old and I want to see him more this year. He has a ton of potential. This is his final year, for me, if he doesn't play well.

Like I said...............I don't claim to know more than Savage. Perhaps I am wrong about Pool. I have always qualified it by saying that he had the size, speed, strength, etc to play the position. Maybe he will get it. I don't know.

All I do know is that the cat hasn't gotten it yet. Rish.........he has played terrible. Of that, there is no doubt in my mind. He didn't improve last year. He stands around. Btw..............did anyone ever look up the number of tackles and passed defensed that him and Jones had last year. And remember........they pretty much went to two-deep for most of the year, after they got fried repeatedly w/Pool trying to play in cover 3.

I have to interject that what I read and comprehend from Savage's quote is quite different than some of you. The only reason I bring it up is there seems to be more than one of you who interpret this different than I do.

"We feel pretty good about our safety position right now," Savage said. "(Doss) is more of a down-in-the-box safety, not a back in coverage guy. Brodney Pool already does that for us."

I read it more like, Doss does this / we need that / Pool does that.

Now, I've been wrong before. But someone will have to remind me of specifically when that was because I don't remember.

Vers, I really hope you are wrong too. But I am not sure that you are. I am definitely not convinced of BP's "stuff" right now. I just hope our defense as a whole improves. That's what I love about football. Every position affect can help or hurt every other position. We'll see what happens this year. Fingers crossed but not expecting much.

There are two possible schools of thought on that.

1. Either Savage and RAC don't see a problem at all with Pool or
2. They see it but haven't found a solution yet.

I keep hoping that Pool will turn into another Troy Palumulo (man, did I butcher that spelling or what).

If you will think back, that guy wasn't so good the first couple of years. My brother is a big Steelers fan and I remember him saying that many fans of the Steelers were disgusted with Troy's performance.

But then, the light seemed to come on for the kid and he's been a terror ever since.

I don't know if it will happen, but I sure hope so. Maybe that's what Savage and RAC see that we don't.

Alright, I'm getting real tired of this... who here has EVER said DA sucks?? Who? Even the most ardent Quinn supporters have conceded some ground to you regarding DA. And I think we all know who the Quinn supporters are (and no, this little rant does not make me one), but I don't ever recall anyone coming out and blatantly saying 'DA sucks.' Come to think of it, you are the only poster that I have ever seen say that a player 'sucks'. Why is everything so black and white with you Vers? Look man, we've had our differences and I've come to respect SOME of your opinions, even when it seems you often disregard mine. But this is getting really old. And I, once again, hate to turn this into a QB thing, but it's not about the QBs anymore. It's about these non-truths that keep appearing in almost every thread. Many, many people have identified what they feel DA's limitations are, but who has said he sucks? Honestly. Who could rightfully say that? The thing that bugs me to no end is that, in most people's minds, identifying his limitations is just that and nothing more. Some people think he's okay, some think he's average, some think he's really pretty good. But most people identify that he has some things he can work on to improve. But, in your mind, you see it as 'You guys think DA sucks!' And that is simply NOT TRUE!!

Quote:

Since when? I was told there was no competition at QB. DA 'deserves the chance to be the starter', does he not? How is he beating out Quinn, when there is no competition at the position? Are you saying that they are now 'competing' for the starting job? And that DA is clearly outperfoming Quinn? Where did you get this information? And since when is Quinn 'legitimate'? What has he done to prove this? Very strange comment coming from you.

Back to Pool, I hate to keep going back to this, but perhaps we should give him a season with an improved front-7 before we are so quick to say he "sucks". Just an idea.

That you did. And look what happened when his supporting cast was upgraded. Why don't we grant Brodney Pool the same courtesy before we put the ever-too-common Suck Tag on him?

The team is loads better than when he took over..the positions of need are fewer than before...

Rookie linebacker Beau Bell will be looked upon to make teams think about running inside.

"In the past, when we'd go to hit someone in the hole, guys would fall forward for a first down," Savage said. "Hopefully, Beau gives us some knock-back ability."

Wonder who in the world he could have been talking about??

We feel pretty good about our safety position right now," Savage said. "(Doss) is more of a down-in-the-box safety, not a back in coverage guy. Brodney Pool already does that for us.

Its actually very simple...one of us will eat some crow on Pool...hope its you and not an ego wish simply a fan's wish but if its me...I have no problems. Whatever I think of you - you have been able to eat crow which is a plus.

But then you come out with these statements: "There are people on here who will tell you that I do admit when I am wrong. I was not wrong about BE."

You were wrong about BE. You admitted to it so after the season and now you are painting a different picture of perfection in your assessments.

In the same light I think you are wrong in your assessments of Pool. We have never waivered on being in an awkward position at Safety...this from RAC, Savage and Tucker...NEVER! and yet some with you in the forefront insisting he ain't worth spiddle and we are deep trouble there. Where's the beef? I think you had some preconceived opinions of Pool cause from day one when we drafted him you have been bashing him and have not stopped. Same with BE until his play made those accusations and opinions rather incredulous.

"And keep blasting. This is going to be soooooo much fun."

Well I'm still waiting for an actual football debate from you. So far you have INSULTED me...THREATENED me physically...but oddly not a once have you brought Football into the forefront...Please, I would sooooo much would like to have fun....Talk is Cheap...Give me some football please
Thanks in advance.

Wow..... One nice season and Savage is drinking the Kool Aid and the fans can't get enough. A few "Love Letter" articles by sports writers that don't actually know what's going on or reasearch what they report and everyone thinks this team is a powerhouse.

It's not.

How about a reality check? We went 10-6 against the softest schedule I have ever seen. (and lost some of the easiest games still).

Obviously this team is deeper and more talented than when Savage took over but then how could it not be? We play a tough schedule this year and it's not going to be easy to get to 8-8.

Let's really look at this team.

Defense- This was one of the worst D's in the league last year, there's no arguing that. Savage's D-line moves will undoubtedly help and I'm a huge advocate of the trades; but, our secondary is looking nearly as bad this year as the D-line did last year.

E Wright got tons of love last year - and for a rookie he played well. He's not a shutdown corner though. He still makes rookie mistakes and has tons of room for improvement. McD will start opposite him and I expect him to play well. After that it's either rookies or antiques.

Pool - omg..... He's terrible. All the excuses and talk of "potential" remind me of that QB from KY we used to start.... Pool hasn't done squat. He may "someday" be great but most every game so far he's been bad. Why the lovefest for this underachiever?

Offense:

DA- played lights out some quarters and unbelievably bad in others. He single handedly shut down our offense in the second half of key games against the Steelers and Bengals. He has a lot of question marks and plenty to prove.

BE- still drops balls that hit him in the hands and chest. Makes unreal diving and leaping catches and has plenty of talent but still drops way too many easy catches. If he's drinking the Kool Aid instead of working his ass off he could regress.

KW2- probably the very best football player on the team when he's on the field. Still has ego issues, injury issues, and makes stupid decisions off the field. If he's injured or holds out this offense becomes less dangerous.

JJ, Wilson, Stallworth - plenty of question marks from health, to ego, to drops.

Savage is right, this roster is WAY better than the day he took over; but the media adn fans are doing the same thing the Bengals did - pretend a B- team was and A+ machine.

We're going to have to fight and claw our way to 8-8 this year because the schedule doesn't have many breaks. Let's put away the champagne and get ready for a brawl.

If all that you say is true, the reality check will come soon enough. For now, I'm enjoying the ride.

This is one of the things that everyone likes to throw around, but exactly how soft would our schedule have been if we had lost 7 more games ? All the sudden the sos wouldnt have been so weak. This is one of the most worthless stats in football imo.
You win what your given, thats all you can ask any team to do.

I'm not talking SoS - I'm talking about playing bad teams.

49rs
Jets
Raiders
Rams
Dolphins

Five games against terrible teams.

Ravens
Ravens
Bills
Cardinals
Texans

Five more games against mediocre to below average teams.

And that's not counting the Bengals who can be either good or terrible. Certainly their defense was terrrible all year.

I'm not a boxer but I guarantee I'll win more fights against 8 year olds than I will pro's Same goes for playing bad teams in the NFL.

And before the season started, everyone was moaning about how rough that schedule was going to be. The Niners and Jets and Cards were seen as up and comers going into the year. Every single season darlings fail and write-offs succeed.

Everyone afraid of the QB taboo?

Quote:

Savage ran down the Browns roster for the lunch crowd, saying quarterback Brady Quinn continues to impress every day, but incumbent starter Derek Anderson "is worth us investing another year to see how far he can go."

I found it interesting that he says Quinn continues to impress, then all he has to say about DA is, we thought we should keep him around 1 more year to see if he can do it again.

I guess it can be read many ways, but i took it as, they like what DA did last year, but they have their reservations on whether he can repeat it in against tougher opponents.

I think we got that message loud and clear when Phil only signed him to a 3-year extension.

i'm glad we had the schedule we did... it was a blessing in disguise...

1) It allowed Anderson to see that he can be a QB in this league... It gave him the confidence he needed to succeed.

2) It allowed this organization a chance to feel that they can be a team to reckon with. They are now in the national spotlight with all the televised games they will get in the 2008 season.

3) Having an "easy" schedule compared to this season's "difficult" schedule, our team will work that much harder to prepare for each opponent.
