I am about to buy a PS3 but I need to decide between the 40GB and the 80GB systems. So far the only real difference I've heard about them is the 80 GB has backwards compadibility for the PS2 while the 40 GB doesn't.

Does anyone know of any real differences between the two systems?

Besides the obvious 40GB extra HDD space and you already know about the B/C is only on the 80GB the only other difference is the 40GB only has (2) USB slots, but you can buy a hub to make up for that, the 80GB has (4) USB slots.

I'm not sure or not because I have the 60GB version but I have card slots (SD cards like for digital cameras and the PSP) on mine and I think the 80GB does as well but the 40GB doesn't.

So if I'm just looking for a gaming console, don't plan on buying a million games or plan on using any port, pictures, or any extras like that then the 40GB is probably the way to go?

It depends if you want to play any PS2 games or not.

I also believe the 80gb comes with motor storm. And yes, the 40gb does not have an SD slot, the 80 does.

FYI, I think a game like GTA IV needs 4gb of HD space to play, I dont play tons of games, but knowing that, im glad I have the 80gb

Wow, 4gb!? I always thought the HD was all for songs, game saves, downloads and other junk. I didn't know so much was needed for just the running of the games.

I've always wondered how much space was needed if you downloaded all the extra songs for GH or Rockband. I always though 40gb would be way more than enough...then again, I remember having a PC with a 500MB HD and wondering how I'd ever fill it up.

I think if it ever came down to running out of room on the PS3 you can always get an external HD...

The external HDD IIRC can only be used for music, pictures and game saves. The Game Data and actual game downloads/demo's can only be saved to the internal HDD.

But on the PS3 that can be upgraded to any 2.5" SATA HDD with 8mb Cache and 5400rpm.

oh yeah, the old 2.5, with the delux turbine twin processors working at 5.98 teraflops over a semi permeable membrane.

i thought you had to use the 3.0

Pretty sure the Motorstorm bundle has been discontinued in favor of the MGS4 bundle with the 80gb.

Not knowing the differences outside of Hard drive size... you can always replace the 40GB hard drive with something bigger. We know it will definitely hold an 80 GB

I have read about people upgrading to 120gb. I'm not sure of anything bigger than that.

here's some really good info i came across when doing some research on my PS3.

I should add - 1 of the tips tell you to put your multimedia into specific folders. This is not necessary anymore, as sony has updated it to read off a regular flash drive with no sorting out.

This is worth knowing because the PS3 can read virtually any video or music file. I have been watching divx on it all weekend.....

only ps3-based files (such as saves, themes, etc) need to be placed in proper folders.

I'll be glad to help anyone if they need it. Just ask.........

I upgraded last summer to a 120g harddrive.

Extremely simple to do. But I'll warn anyone who does it, the screws strip very easily. I almost didn't get them out and thought I was screwed.

Hahaha. I said screwed.

Never met anyone wandering around complaining they had too many gigs, just entirely too much surplus memory. If it is configured this way, I buy extra, because either someone has product poking the pipe to fit 80 or will be sticking it in the pipe. But your 40 will be gone. The hardware gives you some options. Especially if you wanna backtrack to PSDOS games.

Aside from Backwards Compatibility, the storage space is negligible.

You can upgrade the HDD in the PS3 easily.

When does the 80GB price drop take place? I have been semi looking at buying a PS# and heard the 80GB was dropping to $400.

So I dont want to go out and pay $500 if it drops in the next month or so....

Am I correct by saying that both include the wireless connectivity for online gaming? I know that when they first came out, the cheaper model (the one I have) does not have the capability to connect without a ethernet cord.

IIRC they said October. But this really isn't a price cut. They are just taking the 40gb model and putting an 80gb HDD in there.

There is a difference between the 40gb and 80gb models besides the bigger HDD.

The current 80gb:

-can play PS2 games
-has Flash card slots
-has (4) usb ports

the current 40gb and the 80gb model available in October will not.

Oh, the article I read (which I cant find now) said the 40 gb was being discontinued and that the 80gb was getting the price cut.

They would be wrong. The 80gb model is getting discontinued and the 40gb is being upgraded.

Sony said in thier press confrence at e3 "The new 80gb sku will have the same functionality as the current 40gb sku."

Free is right. I just bought the bundled metalgearsolid4 80g b/c of that. I waited and waited hoping the price would go down, but now with the 40 being upgraded I grabbed one while I still could. The flash card slot alone is awesome.

i have a question about the ps3's controller, and i felt like i'd just stick it in here, since it's kind of a waste to have its own topic...

the 360's wireless controller goes off after an idle time of like 10-15 minutes, does the ps3 have an option like that? i constantly forget to turn off the controller and i always get screwed with a dead controller when i want to play, i looked around but couldn't find anything...

I'll read the instruction booklet when I get home. I think you hit the playstation button again to turn it off. I know I somehow turned it on then off last night when I was messing around with it.

That would be right. You hold the button down on the controller then a screen will pop up and one of the options is to turn off the controller...

guys, i know that

what i'm talking about is the controller being able to go off itself, in case i forget to...

with th 360, if it is not in use for 10-15 minutes, it automatically goes off to save battery, i was wondering if there was an option to have that for the ps3...

I'm not sure then. I know it doesn't do it automatically...

I have two controllers, so I just leave one charging while I play with the other then switch when one is running low...

I read the intructions and they didn't say it would. Since they mention charging the battery over and over and over..........I think it might not turn itself off. Pretty dumb if not.

Started MGS4....................wow, lots of scenes but they look GREAT!

i'm addicted to mlb the show right now
