Patriots sign veteran QB Testaverde FOXBORO, Massachusetts (Ticker) - Vinny Testaverde has been lured back to the NFL by one of his former coaches.
The New England Patriots on Tuesday signed the 43-year-old quarterback.
Testaverde reunites with coach Bill Belichick. The two went to the playoffs together with the Cleveland Browns in 1994.
In his 19-year NFL career, Testaverde started 208 of 223 games but never played in a Super Bowl. Belichick has won three Super Bowl titles in New England with Tom Brady at quarterback.
Testaverde gives the Patriots a veteran backup at quarterback. Matt Cassel, a second-year player from Southern California, had been serving in that role.
Testaverde ranks in the top 10 in four major passing categories. He is sixth in passing yards (45,252) and completions (3,691), seventh in pass attempts (6,526) and eighth in touchdown passes (269).
Last season, Testaverde started four of six games with the New York Jets and completed 60-of-106 passes for 777 yards and one touchdown with six interceptions.
Testaverde led the Jets to the AFC championship game during the 1998 season when he threw for 3,256 yards and 29 touchdowns, and spent seven years with the team.
In 2004, Testaverde reunited with coach Bill Parcells in Dallas and passed for 3,532 yards and 17 touchdowns with 20 interceptions for the Cowboys.
The first overall pick in the 1987 draft, Testaverde spent his first six years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and five seasons with the Cleveland-Baltimore franchise before signing with the Jets in 1998.
