Good trade...We need bats and if Sabathia wasn't going to sign during the season, then we gotta get something for him. There is still the remote chance we can sign him in the offseason, but I think that's a dream. I don't blame the Indians from wanting to give him more then a 4 or 5 year contract...

Then you either need to wise up and learn how a small market team wins or watch another sport.

Isn't Detroit a small market?
Dick Jacobs knew how to market this team and spend the money.
Here we had our chance to go over the top this offseason, and yes, injuries probably would have made us a disappointment anyway, but not to this magnitude.
We needed a corner outfielder to put the fear of God into opposing pitchers...never happened.
This team is a mess...getting healthy won't do much. We're a 3rd place team at best if healthy.

Meanwhile, Boston has pitching AND huge contracts.
They beat us. You don't have to ignore pitching. The Yanks, Tigers and 90's Indians problems were they had no pitching.
The Red Sox do...they're loaded at pitching, but they have those two bats in Manny and Ortiz that the rest of the lineup feeds off of. We don't have that.
Save the "Hafner and Martinez" garbage, they're not in the same league.
Plus this is terrible PR for the Tribe...Bobby D. has a mess on his hands in the PR department.

I don't get it. Is this a done deal? First they say it is, then they include the Shapiro will call back stuff. Doesn't sound final to me.

Is there any word yet on who the other two players are. My guess is Taylor Green being one. I think it's a good trade for the Tribe. Getting a player like LaPorta who can be that big bat in the middle of your lineup that some people think they are missing and the 3rd baseman of the future all for a guy that wasn't going to be there next year anyway. How exactly is that a bad thing? The rotation isn't going to suck too bad either with Lee and Carmona coming back next season. Of course I'm really not as excited about what this trade does for you guys as I am for what it does for The Brewers.

I'm not overly thrilled with this. Not that I had a problem with them trading him but more due to the fact that it looks like Shapiro had to grab his ankles for the Brewers.
YOU don't dictate to US who you will or won't include in the deal. WE have the Cy Young winner. If you want him, pony up!
If we wanted Escobar we should have got him. I don't like the fact that it looks like Milwaukee controlled these negotiations.

LaPorta is a can't miss guy. Given he's a potential all-star, we probably viewed anything else as gravy.
I'd wait to see who else we got back (with Laporta) before you make any judgments.

How much power do you have if everyone knows the guy is leaving after this year?
If CC was signed to a longer contract then there is noway you could get him for this but since he is leaving you lose a lot of the power in negotiations.
It happens every year.

And how many of the Red Sox players have come through trades and their minors? Allow me to help you just off the top of my head.
Youkills Pedroia Lowell Coco Jacob Ellisbury Beckett Masterson Lester Papelbon Okjima
The only main people I can think of on the Sox that were free agents were Manny, Ortiz, and Dice-K. And if you think we can compete with their payroll, then you aren't worth wasting time on.

Yes more David Dellucci! Seriously, who do we sign in FA that we won't have to give a ridiculous contract to? We're in a small market and have an undesirable location to most free agents. I'd rather us invest that money in the farm system. LaPorta's a step in the right direction, from what I've heard of him.

Yeah, I mean I don't get it with some of our fans.
We can't hit worth a crap, we have NO ONE in the minors that looks to be a major league player, so we trade a rent-a-arm for THE BEST MAJOR LEAGUE PROSPECT, from the BEST FARM SYSTEM in baseball and people are whining?
LaPorta is BY FAR better then ANYONE we could expect to get from another team or in the draft with one of the extra picks we would have gotten for Sabathia.

In the big picture, trading Sabathia was a good move.
But I still think we're being cheap. Dick Jacobs wasn't cheap like this, and he was still making a profit off this team.
Where's the STO money going? Where's the Progressive name money going? It sure as hell didn't go to re-signing C.C.!
How the hell can you expect to compete when you won't shell out cash to keep your home grown guys or go out and get that guy or two who will put you over the top? Are we doomed to be like the Twins and A's forever? Teams that always are decent but never get over the hump because they don't shell out the cash to put themselves over the hump?
If that's the case, why do we even bother trying?

What does STO generate per year? I would guess it surely wouldn't cover the 20-25 million per year Sabathia would command. The prgressive field deal worked out to about 2 million per year (if I remember correctly). While it's nice, that's pocket change when you're discussing resigning a player like C.C.
Spending money is one thing, sinking 25 mil per year in to ONE player is another...especially when he plays every 5th day.
Is Sabathia a good arm? Sure he is but what's been the history on bank busting pitching contracts? Zito? Santana? I would have loved to retain C.C. but given that it would have really strapped us financially for some time (even if it did work out) it was probably the right move.

I think some people are also understating what we got for CC.
They say LaPorta has power NOW to hit 40 hrs. His power ceiling is HUGE. He hits for average, he takes walks...he isn't fast but he isn't slow either. He is RIGHT HANDED. He's got an above average arm and can play a corner outfield. He can be someone like Albert Belle or ManRam to give you an idea.
To put it in perspective, he's as close to a guarentee that you can get on a prospect. I'd expect to see him up here at the latest of August 30.

Yeah I mean if you're going to trade for someone, getting a guy like LaPorta is about as good as it gets. He was a monster in college, has continued to mash the ball at single and double A and as you mentioned is a DISCIPLINED power hitter. He has a .400+ OBP this season in 300+ AB's. This isn't some cross your fingers player. He was the best player out of the majors best farm system and yet some people are unhappy?
I'll be interested to see who else we got. Just because it wasn't Escobar or Gamel everyone assumes the other guys we got are nobodies? Milwaukee had something like 9-10 minor league all-stars in their farm system. Just because you don't get 2 of the top 3 players doesn't mean you're getting robbed.

This says Taylor Green is in the deal... Brewers take shot at playoffs with Sabathia deal The Milwaukee Brewers, mired in last place six weeks ago, are now banking on the reigning American League Cy Young winner to lead them to their first playoff appearance in more than a quarter century. Cleveland Indians ace C.C. Sabathia was traded Sunday afternoon to the Brewers for three minor leaguers, including top prospect Matt LaPorta and third baseman Taylor Green, sources told Yahoo! Sports. The deal is contingent on clean medical reports for the players involved. The Brewers pushed for the trade to happen this week so they could get two starts from Sabathia before the All-Star break, sources said. He is scheduled to debut in Milwaukee on Tuesday against Colorado. On May 19, the Brewers were 20-24, their season crumbling under lofty expectations. They had lost starter Yovani Gallardo to a knee injury, and executives around baseball called general manager Doug Melvin to inquire about trading for ace Ben Sheets. Since then, the Brewers have gone 29-15 and climbed into a tie for the wild-card lead and are 3 ½ games behind National League Central-leading Chicago. Sabathia, too, has undergone a renaissance since a poor start. The 27-year-old, who is eligible for free agency after this season and turned down a four-year, $72 million deal from Cleveland, has a 2.16 earned-run average over 104 1/3 innings since April 22. On the season, he is 6-8 with a 3.83 ERA. LaPorta, drafted out of Florida seventh overall two years ago, was converted from first base to left field and is considered an average-at-best defender. Still, the Indians coveted his bat, and he has hit 20 home runs at Double-A this season. Cleveland also asked for third baseman Mat Gamel or shortstop Alcides Escobar, but the Brewers did not budge. Had Cleveland not agreed on a deal, Milwaukee was prepared to pursue other available pitchers, such as A.J. Burnett, a source said.

Check out Green's numbers.... In 3 seasons in the minors he's hitting .294 with a .379 OBP. Last year he hit .321 with 86 RBI's. Man, Shapiro sure got robbed.

I don't think anyone opposes this deal based on who we got. Based on who we got, it was a good trade.
The opposition just hates the fact that this trade had to be made to begin with. How baseball economics work.

Exactly... from what I've heard we offered CC a pretty big extension that he didn't take... I'm fine with this... worked with Colon and hopefully will work out here.

In 78 games this year he has 86 hits and 50 RBI's! Not exactly a throw in. Plus, he's just 21 (and LaPorta is 23). Green bats left/throws right and LaPorta is a righty/righty.
Both of these guys are probably going to be opening day starters next year and at worst mid/early season call ups. Guys that hit like this don't stay in the minors for very long.
The question with LaPorta is, given Garko's struggles, do we move him back to 1st?

We were going to lose him because Cleveland can't/won't pay him. That's the frustrating part. Not trading him for prospects. Trading him because we won't fork over the money.
If we did everything in our power to try to get him signed, and he said no, then fine. That was the right thing to do. If we didn't, then there is where I have the problem and the frustration continues. How many times have we brought up guys through our organization from the bottom up, and watch them become dominant, only to see them walk away in free agency?
I'd rather have an ace on the mound with a Cy under his belt than prospects. If we could resign him, we wouldn't be talking about this. That's what is frustrating.

we can't compete with larger markets when it comes to free agents. there will be a day when grady leaves too. you have to learn to accept it at some point.

Yep, it was a fair deal and he turned it down. Call the Dolan's cheap but offering as much as they did was really going out on a limb. We would have had 1/3+ of our payroll tied up in ONE player. C.C. said no thanks.......at that point, you move on.
A powering hitting right handed bat and a run producing third-basemen are coming back in return. Don't know what else you could ask for.

That's what I figure... I don't see how people are saying we didn't pony up the money when we offered him $18 million a year essentially... that's shelling out some dough... he turned us down... and we ended up getting some good prospects for him... I'm fine with that.

If I'm wrong here correct me. We still have the best pitcher in MLB (Lee), now, two of the Brewers hottest prospects and we got them for a guy neither will have next season...I'll take it!
