Posted by Mary Kay Cabot June 11, 2008 13:38PM

Browns center LeCharles Bentley has asked for his release from the Browns and it has been granted, his agent, Jonathan Feinsod said this afternoon.

Bentley passed his physical Tuesday and practiced with the team that morning on a limited basis.

I agree 100%. I wish him the absolute best of luck no matter where he lands. And, before I say this was a great move or a horrible move, I'm going to see what our FO says.

...didn't see this coming.

Wow. Makes LeCharles look like a freaking D-bag! We pay him all the cash, help him get better and then he demands his release to be a fulltime starter? How does he even know his knee is ready? Man, this makes him look really bad.

I'll wait for more details but I don't see what can change my mind. I've rooted for him to get healthy so he can fulfill his dream to play for the Browns....and then he wants to play somewhere else because of where he's on the depth chart (after being injured for 2 straight years - like we should have kept his position open).

Wow is all I can say.

Those were my initial feelings and thoughts, too. If he really does want to leave, I say GO.

Don't judge him yet. The guy is a Browns fan, but he's a football player, too. He wants to play, and he sees that he might not get that chance here. That is actually a glowing endorsement that our OL has some depth (how's that for optimism? )

We also sent him to a clinic where he developed a staph infection and almost had to have his leg ripped off. Even if that was an exaggeration by Bentley, he probably would have not missed last year if that didn't happen.

I'll wait this out before I pass judgment, but something was certainly brewing yesterday that overflowed today.

I'm a little confused here. Did he expect to be guaranteed a starting pos. immediately after he passed his physical? or..Maybe he didn't feel good enough to break the starting line-up.

Yes, but he owes this team at least one season for all we paid. One freaking season! Is that too much to ask for $20 million? If his leg is all that powerful and ready to go, he should be able to push someone out of the starting lineup.

LeCharles Bentley asks for, receives release from Cleveland Browns
by Mary Kay Cabot Wednesday June 11, 2008, 1:39 PM
Updated: 2 p.m. EDT

Browns center LeCharles Bentley has asked for his release from the Browns and it's been granted, his agent Jonathan Feinsod said this afternoon.

"LeCharles came back to Cleveland to be in integral part of the Cleveland Browns, his hometown team,'' said Feinsod. "Through no fault of the Browns at all, they didn't know if LeCharles was going to come back or not and they moved on with their plans.

"But this is not the same team LeCharles signed with. They have commitments to other players. LeCharles is not ready to be an insurance policy at this point.''

Feinsod stressed that Bentley "did great on his physical and I know the Browns were very impressed. It wasn't anything about his health. He just feels he was not going to play the kind of role here he plans to play in 2008.''

Bentley left the building shortly after noon with a suitcase and was picked up by his mother. He had no comment at that time

"LeCharles' mindset is great,'' said Feinsod. "He had a near-death experience because of a staph infection and now he's completely healthy and ready to resume his All-Pro and Hall of Fame career.''

Feinsod said he has not started talking to other teams yet about Bentley, "but there's no doubt in my mind that he's going to play in 2008 and play at a high level.''

Bentley did say before he left the facility that he'd probably go back to Phoenix, where he has spent the bulk of the past two years rehabbing his surgically repaired left knee.

I really can't believe this. I hope he ends up playing for a losing team personally. To me this says that he didn't have any confidence in his ability. If he says he is as good as he was, maybe better than he would have started on the Browns o-line. He was a pro bowler at 2 positions. He evidently doesn't think he can crack the starting line-up.

The Browns brought him in to play center, Benley wants to play center, but they arent going to mess with the cork in the dam (Hank Fraley). Good move for the Browns and for Bentley. This move was made purely for the sake of team chemistry.

It's probably for the best. Our offensive line is pretty solid. If he didn't want to compete for a starting spot then he needed to go elsewhere.

Who's so desperate they'll be willing to roll the dice on the guy? He cashed Lerner's checks until he was fit to play, then bails because he wants a starting spot? I hope there's more to it than that.

It can't really be that complicated...

- If he didn't think he could play at all, then he wouldn't try and he'd sit on his contract money from the Browns

- If the Browns thought he could return to a NFL-starter caliber level, there's no way they'd release him out of a vet min deal for free

So obviously, he thinks he can play football, and we don't think so (or at least, don't think he can play at a level worth maintaining the drama of this situation)

That kinda sucks..

But, I don't believe for one second that the Browns release him if there wasn't some other issues evolving. I don't even want to hazard a guess as to what they might be, but something else is up..

Or it could be something as simple as they granted his release out of respect for him and how the entire situation unfolded..

Somehow I don’t feel like putting all the blame on LeCharles. Something happened between last year and yesterday which we don’t know (or at least I don’t know)

This is too crazy …

Need to wait and see what both side comes up with as explanation.

No, I don’t think he asked for release because he was not offered starting center role, Its to stupid to ask for that after not playing for 2-3 years. It has some business or emotional side to it.

I was thinking that the team wouldn't release a guy just because he asked for it. But, did they see how Chad Johnson caused problems for Cinci when he asked to be traded or released and Cinci wouldn't do it. But, Cinci held tough and CJ backed down. So, that probably isn't a good line of thinking.

My "jump the gun" conclusion is that Bentley saw that we have a lot of quality guys on the line and that he'd really have a tough time cracking that, at least this year, if not in the future as well. He saw a different makeup of the team and organization than when he signed here a couple years ago and maybe felt he just didn't fit in here anymore. Maybe there's a certain amount of ego that got in the way, but you'd see that with any football player, I'm thinking.

As for the organization, we see a guy who we've payed a lot of money to who is coming back from a very serious injury, especially for his position. We have a very solid group of guys already at that position and we've essentially been moving forward as if Bentley isn't coming back. Now, when he may be able to come back, you run the risk of keeping him around just because he's a big name player with a big salary and ruining that chemistry you've worked so hard to build. Or, you may not like the guy, plain and simple.

In the end, we have to see how this all comes out. We have to really step back and realize that most of us didn't really think we'd be seeing Bentley ever in a Browns uni anyway after his injury, so this shouldn't upset us too much.

Let's be frustrated about it only to the extent that we should, but then focus on the good things with this team (of which, for the first time in a long while, there are a good many) and get ready for a great season.

No, of course we weren't going to offer him a starting role now....

I think we told him that we weren't confident in his ability to return and compete against our team.

Bentley got the idea that we weren't going to give him a fair shot, and were keeping him around mostly in case one of our guys go down, and that's not the situation he wanted.

Well I think there is/was some serious communication problems between LCB's camp and the Browns Front Office. If I were Phil and Romeo, once he passed his physical, I would have sat him down and told him that lots have changed from a personell standpoint on this team. You are going to have to win the starting job from Fraley. I hope that is what occurred behind closed doors. But for some reason, I don't think so.

I just think that Phil and Romeo didn't really want him here. You can tell that by the lack of a true press conference instead of the B/S we got yesterday on the Browns homepage.

It all smelled fishy from the get go yesterday.

I don't know who to blame at this point. All I know is I'm upset that we weren't given the chance to see a hometown guy play his heart out for Cleveland. I'm not sure who's fault that is, but it still sux.

Exactly.

This is just messed up. This might be one of the worst free agent signings ever. All that money, injured on the first practice, sat out two years and then demands a release the second he can play again. Talk about a freaking waste! I feel bad for all of the people that bought his jersey. I would be embarrassed to own one now. I want to call him a traitor...but it might be early for that.

Man, I'm just floored right now.

Well, if the Browns were in dire need for offensive lineman, this would totally suck. With or without him IMO we'll be just fine...after all it's not like we were sitting on our hands doing nothing this past off season. We will be just fine...no worries.

I thought of that too.....but how much could we really expect for him in a trade? Jason Taylor, while old, will most likely traded for a 3rd or 4th rounder. And he's actually played the past two years and still has healthy legs. We'd be lucky to get some practice balls and some used jocks for LCB (no matter how his physical went).

Here's a little more from the article:

Cleveland Browns lineman LeCharles Bentley misses meeting and practice
Posted by Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter June 11, 2008 12:45PM

Observations from the second day of Browns minicamp ...

• LeCharles Bentley missed a team meeting and the first team practice. Coach Romeo Crennel said that Bentley was in the building, but he didn't know the reason he skipped his morning commitments. He said he would to talk to Bentley before the second practice and let the media know the reason for Bentley's unexcused absence. Bentley was seen leaving the Browns' facility at lunchtime with a suitcase. General Manager Phil Savage said he would comment on the matter later today.

• Tight end Kellen Winslow stepped in for a few reps in team drills and immediately looked like the best player out there. On one play he got behind linebacker Kris Griffin and hauled in a Brady Quinn pass barely tipped by Griffin. Winslow sprinted about 40 yards to the end zone.

• Teammates razzed linebacker Willie McGinest for allowing a Derek Anderson bullet to go through his hands. McGinest has five career interceptions in 14 NFL seasons.

web page

From the sounds of Grossi's article, it sounds like RAC didn't see it coming either.

Not that anything Grossi's reporting should be considered gospel anyway.

Pretty much thats it. He wanted to compete for the starting center position and that just wasnt going to happen. Hank may not be a probowler but he really has become the unquestioned leader on the offensive line.

The Browns I doubt had any problem with the release. They just dont want anything messing up what they have along the line especially when its a player they have paid a ton of money to and received nothing for that money. Team Chemistry is simply more important than LeCharles Bentley.
