He was likely medicated as he said he was yesterday for the 2nd nine. I wonder just how much damage, if any, was done... and what does it mean for The Open Championship a scant four weeks from now? Imagine that.... he's got 14 now, and could conceivably have 16 by the end of this season. Absolutely mind boggling that 'the record that will never be beaten' could fall this time next year.

The more I think about today, the playoff should have been played under match play rules. It was really a competition between two people and by playing 18 instead of 4, you're trying to maximize the chances of getting the better overall player (minimizing the "bad luck bounce" or gust of wind).
Isn't that what match play does?
If there were 3 or 4 guys in the playoff, I think you stick with the stroke format.

No, stroke play works because each hole can have an impact value of more than just one in either direction. You can double, triple bogey, or eagle.... and the other guy can do the same. Every single stroke counts for the long haul, there is no effective wiping of the slate after a bad hole.
Stroke play is for Championships, match play is for gentlemen's wagers and friendly outings.

I gotta disagree. The reason the US Open courses are set up as difficult as they are is the attempt to find the best player, and it is predicated on players dealing with the wind, the rough, the firm greens, the bad bounce, etc... because the best players adapt and recover, the rest fold....
And all things being equal, even if you did it match play, Tiger would have still won.

Not often that I get sucked into a golf tournament on TV ... but that was some great theater ... well, up until Tiger won.
I agree...the guy is a steroid freak.
it was really funny watching him fake limp yesterday...had he fallen a few shots back we would have seen him using his 3 iron as a cane so people could talk about his gallant effort under tremendous odds.
I for one am sick of the punk. I am even more sick of his caddy....those two deserve each other.

Maybe so.
I don't question Woods ability. I just don't like his attitude...I don't like people who throw clubs and cuss on the golf course.
I don't like people who ignore the fans and refuse to sign autographs....so no...I don't like the guy and wouldn't play with him if someone gave me a twosome with him at Augusta...I have played Augusta before so that wouldn't be the draw and playing with him does nothing for me.
But...that is just my opinion and position. I understand there are lot's of people who would disagree.
Now if it was Pine Valley, I might have to put up with the guy.

I would suspect many, many players curse on the course... throwing clubs I don't agree with... but some of the best have thrown or broken clubs.
In terms of signing autographs... I have no problem with not signing them during a match. After teh match I would hope he would sign a few, or at least maybe during practice rounds... but during the match I can understand wanting to be focused.
He's not my favorite player, but I have a lot of respect for him. Unbelievable ability to focus when need be,

I curse... usually at the ball or myself... Throwing clubs? I don't do that... well, it depends on your definition of "throw"... I have been known to toss one at my bag with a bit of force after a bad shot.... I don't do it so much any more because I don't play nearly as much and my expectations aren't as high... when I was really good, my temper was worse.. Plus I was usually playing for money I couldn't afford to lose...
Nobody, NOBODY should sign autographs when they are between the ropes... before and after... I've heard both sides from people about Tiger, some say he was really nice, others got shunned..... Most of the "shunned" stories came from his early years when he was adjusting to fame and that adjustment took him a while..... Tiger is just competitive and probably a bit moody... big deal.
I'm enjoying his run, but I'm also anxiously awaiting "the next Tiger"... and he's 32, so it's about time for some poor kid to get that label...

Sure....but they don't do it so loud everybody hears. It's one thing if your playing partner hears you mumble something....it's another to more or less shout it out.
As I said, I don't really care what some of the best have done. If they have thrown clubs, slammed them into their bag time after time, or broken them in a fit...I don't like them. If I was playing with them, I would excuse myself from the round. If it was at my course, I would politely tell them the round is over.
I am as serious as a heart attack when I say that.
As to signing....of course I am not talking about a competitive round.....but Woods goes to a entirely different level...he doesn't at parctice or practice rounds. His goofball caddy Stevie is very precise in picking up every tee and putting them in his pocket. Never once have I seen him or Woods toss a tee to some kid at the tee...friggen Stevie probably trades them for sex or something.
As I said, I recognize his ability is unparalleled.
But no way will I ever root for that guy. He lost me about 3-4 years ago.
I would however give him a jump start in a grocery store parking lot if he was ever in need.

Well part of hearing woods I think is because there are so many friggin microphones and cameras on him...
I didn't know that about his caddie and during practice rounds though... I don't watch any practice rounds or anything like that any more. I use to go to PGA tour events in Virginia and up in Toledo when I was younger but haven't been to one in years.

All the more reason when you think about it...at least IMO.
I have been to several practice rounds at Augusta...Woods never looks at the crowd, smiles at people, tosses a tee or ball, and as I said....his caddy is like a vulture and scoops all that stuff up to stuff in his pocket for his own purpose..

Yeah, I have never cared much for Steve Williams...
Really ticked me off a few years back when he went under the ropes and chucked some dudes camera in the water. All Williams had to do in that situation was tell security and they would have taken care of it.....
I am not the biggest Tiger fan, but at this point, I just appreciate the things he can do on a golf course. I know that he carries himself with the whole "holier than thou" persona, but I dont let that bother me. The guy just never cracks...

'Peen, you would absolutely HATE playing with me. I swear, I throw things. I'm essentially like a big 4 year old on the course. I've gotten a ton better as I've gotten older. I don't really throw things at all anymore (not since my old driver "mysteriously" broke on a bench), but I swear like a sailor. But, I do that pretty much most of the time anyway (on the course or not).
But, I also take into consideration the company. If I'm with people who don't or if there are kids around or families, I never do. But, when I'm with people I know can handle it, I sound like my mom after a few glasses of wine (and she can swear with the best of 'em. Italians, I'll tell ya...)

lol, yeah... you won't ever want to play a round with me either Peen. I'm an F-Bomb machine out there, hehe. If Augusta wouldn't be a draw (because you've played it) to play with him, other than dropping that you've played it, why mention it? Course Name dropper Either way, I call b.s. I think you people have silly expectations of Tiger and are just searching for reasons to hate on him... I mean, seriously.... you're tired of his Caddy?? That's just reaching. He's out there to play his match, not for Public Relations and photos opportunities with the apes on the other side of the ropes. Personally, unless Tiger is playing, I don't watch... it's not worth my time.

Woods to have more surgery, miss rest of 2008 season June 18, 2008 CBSSports.com wire reports Tiger Woods will miss the rest of the season because of a left knee that will require more surgery, a person with knowledge of the decision said Wednesday. Woods had surgery to clean out cartilage April 15, but later suffered a stress fracture while preparing for his return to golf. That's what caused his pain during the U.S. Open, which he won in a 19-hole playoff Monday over Rocco Mediate.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement had yet to be made. Woods was expected to discuss his future on his web site later Wednesday.
Woods was last seen in public late Monday afternoon walking with a pronounced limp across Torrey Pines toward the parking lot, the U.S. Open trophy in his arms. Upcoming surgery makes his 14th major title even more staggering -- despite the stress fracture, he managed to win a U.S. Open that required 91 holes over five days.
Woods played only seven times worldwide this year and won seven of them.
He will miss a major championship for the first time in his career and will not be available for the Ryder Cup in September.
I guess that knee was hurt more than he let on over the weekend. And it makes his win even more impressive (or proves how far behind the field is from him). A healthy Woods would have won by 10 shots.

He admitted to taking pain medication for the knee. I read or heard that he was drugged up on the back 9 on Sunday and all of Monday. Which would support your theory of only seeing him limp at certain times.
I don't really care who likes or dislikes him. It's irrelevant to me. He's going to be considered the greatest golfer of all time regardless (maybe greatest sportsman of all time).
As far as his behavior on the course, the PTI guys made a comment on that and I agree. Nobody really saw or heard the reaction to every swing Arnie and Jack made. So you don't really know how they were (or the other greats from long ago). There wasn't the coverage. Should Tiger not get so emtional about a bad shot? Maybe......but nobody expects PlayerX to not swear on the football field or ask ManagerX to not throw bats on the field when he's ticked off. There are boom mics in every sport, it's up to the broadcast team to filter that out.
During Game 5 of the NBA Finals, Doc Rivers jumped up and screamed, "You got to be FREAKING kidding me! That was a FREAKING foul!" And he wasn't saying "freaking". ABC showed him doing that three times. The last two were close ups in slow motion. They knew what they were showing....and did it anyway. Is it Docs fault that all the kids watching got to see that or ABC?

Sorry to get this topic back on the US Open and off of Peen's hate for Tiger.... But, you have to give Rocco Mediate all the credit in the world. He went toe to toe with the best in the world for 3 rounds, plus an 18 hole playoff, and even took it to an extra hole in the playoff.

I was rooting for Tiger all the way just like I usually do but if Mediate happens to be in the lead or even close to it from now on I'll cheer him on. The dude played amazing golf going step by step with Woods. Anyone who is able to do that is damn good and it's also doesn't hurt that he has a great personality to go with it.

You aren't always in pain with those types of injuries. You are when you twist and turn a certain way but, not always constant. I think it's petty and silly to make that kind of accusation, especially after hearing the medical reports. It's fine not to like someone, but you don't have to question every little thing they do in order to justify it. Especially when it borders on the ridiculous.

First of all, I said I DID NOT think he was faking. I made no accusations.
What is petty, silly or ridiculous about finding it odd that someone with a torn ACL and two upper tibia fractures was able to deliberately bounce down to his knees? I never said he was in constant pain.
I like Tiger and was rooting for him. I think what he did was one of the greatest feats in sports history. Like the writer in our local rag said: "There are people parking in handicap spots and riding motor karts in Walmart with less severe injuries".
