...and they still owe me a paycheck. I'm just venting frustration here as this has been going on for over a month, but really, how hard is it to put a stamp on the paychecks and pop it them in the mail? There is no way to contact them short of showing up at the spa, and if I do that, I might go postal.
I think I'm going to make a call to the Attorney General of Ohio to register my complaint. That's what prior customers with unusable gift certificates are doing.

Michelle,
when buisness close, many time all thier assests have to go thru thier bank, so your owner might not have control over his buisness as of now, the banks might have it. As the bank recieves money from all who owe it, the bank will divideup the money with employees recieving the first amount for all owed, I do think this is a law but not sure, I do believe all they would owe you is for timed worked, and all vacation might be lost.
i've been thru a manufacturing closing and I know we didnt have control of our monies once we filled to close. The banks controled everything, telling us whom to pay. But keep on your boss.
Also regester with your local economic center / unemployment center , Being a employee from a closed buisness your a displaced worker and there is monies put aside for displaced workers, schooling ect your now intitled to recieve.

Oh, they didn't give us vacation or any benefits. That's how spas operate. They owe me less than $100 for a days work, so I'm not THAT concerned about the money. It's the principal of the matter. Well, that, and I'm sure they'll put the check on my W-2 for this year. The W-2's have been wrong the past couple of years anyway. The paycheck they owe me was cut and ready for pickup on Friday, May 16th, and they closed the doors on Saturday, May 17th. So, it's there and ready...and if I would have picked it up Friday, this would all be a moot point.

Sorry to hear about that Michelle I hope you can get your last check. The one job I had that closed up unannounced the owner called me to say there was no last check. I was soooo mad I could have knocked his teeth out That put me in a terrible bind.
Our honor defend, we will fight to the end, for OHIO! GO BUCKS!

Michelle,, so sorry to hear of your situation, at least you are not out a big bunch of money or bene's or anything like that.
Do you know the owners home number, perhaps a gentle call to the owner would prompt them to meet you at the spa so you could get your check.
I caution you, when companies go out of business, it usually means they are out of money... so your chances of gettin the money may not be very good...
Good luck.. oh, and the Ohio AG's office is the best place to start..

I did forget to mention the bank divies out money after the bank itself gets paid....Go figure, but I'm sure you figured that...LOL..
sorry to hear about the closing.
After our place of buisness closed, I was able to go back to school and take a few college cources on buisness finance & human resource's ( I know too bad they didnt send me back to learn how to spell...LOL) but all the books & college tuitions were paid for by the state of Ohio.

Yeah,, what's the old saying, never put off till tomorrow what you can do today... or something like that....
It's a bummer, but to be honest, IF and it's a BIG IF, that check was actually there waiting for you, there's no telling if it would have bounced anyway..
A friend of mine just got laid off by his employer (actually, he got fired) and he's been down and out for a few days now..
I saw him yesterday and asked him a couple of questions...
1. Are you dead? He said NO
2. Are you physically injured? He said NO
3. Can you work? He said YES..
I said, then you doing just fine,,, go find another job and be done with it.
After he slapped me around a bit for being a jerk, we had a beer and charted a course for him to follow...
I think he'll be fine.... and so will you!

Thanks, everyone. I'm not really upset about them closing. Anyone who didn't see it coming was blind as a bat, trust me. It's not about finding work or getting unemployment. It's about what shady women running the place are. Just put a stamp on my check, darn it. Simple.
Anyway, I suppose they could always sell the building they own (and paid a million for) and pay us. Of course, that probably won't happen. Biches.

I was working for a company called Rehearsals.com, (some may remember the links to the bands,). They ended up going belly up. It took a year to get my last check, I just got it about a month ago, but they did pay. It was part of the terms of their bankruptcy-restructure deal and court ordered. All very official. It sucks when it happens, but rather than press legal options I chose to retain relationships with my former bosses and basically wrote it off. It was a nice surprise when I finally got it. If it's still sitting somewhere maybe you can go pick yours up. If not and you're not that concerned about the money, I say don't let it harsh your mellow.

I wouldn't really hurt them, but I might give them the "you are truly pathetic" glance. Truth be told, I would trade them my paycheck for a couple of microwavable neck wraps they sold. The contact I was working with last month has an email that is no longer valid, so I suppose they really have given everyone the old "screw you". And, again, the employees should have known this was coming, and I was down to very, very part time work, so it really hasn't affected us. I feel sorry for the employees due big money and the clients with gift certificates that will never be made good.

DM - First try to contact your old employers to get your check. That's always the best advice. If you don't get what you deserve go to AG4Ohio and start a claim. The folks over in that office will take good care of you. I would recommend you send any former customers stuck with bad gift certificates to that website also. You can file your complaint online or over the phone. Good people at that AG's office (now that the riff-raff has been thrown out anyway).

Sorry to hear Michelle, I know you are not worrying too much! Sad to hear they had no respect to give you a courteous call before closing the doors! Sometimes people really are not good! Hang in there!

While I'm sure the AG's office does a good job most of the time, sometimes they can't get their heads out of their butts.
I had a small Sub S corp. up until 2002. Filed taxes every year. In Dec. of 2007 I got a notice from the ohio tax dept. that I was past due on taxes for tax year 2005. We forwarded all the documentation that yes, a tax return had been filed, yes, I should've dissolved the company when it went out of business, and yes, we were disputing the tax owed. (since the company had had NO activity - no income and no debts, for years). Long story short, they kept sending notices, we kept faxing the return in question. Then the AG's office got involved and sent me a threatening letter. Then they sent a letter thanking us for the returns and saying it was going back to the tax dept. Everything was taken care of. The company was dissolved (which can't happen if there are outstanding LEGITIMATE tax claims against the company). So, 2 weeks ago I get a letter that if I don't pay (this time the amount had been reduced by 82% - based on what, we don't know), but if I didn't pay within 30 days they would put a lien on the companies assets.
The company was dissolved (that's a different gov't. agency that does that), no taxes are owed (my cpa has affirmed that), the company has no assets and has not since 2003, but yet they are threatening to put a lien on ME, even though it was a sub s, corp (which means I am not personally liable for anything anyway).
The AG's office does good work, but don't wait for them to get it done. It's been a year and a half so far for me.

Actually, she did have several gift certificates... She wanted a massage, asked for gift certificates for her birthday... and has been so busy lately... that she neglected going...She has about $100 worth, I think.
She was just as mad that she couldn't get her hairdresser and other peoples numbers. Fortunately, they got in touch with her! Good Luck with your search... Let us know where you land
