What's this? Ammo making a "grumpy old man" post? Not exactly. It's just kind of culture shock to me.

As you might or might not know, I'm a before care and after care director at a local daycamp, so I deal with a lot of kids. It's amazing to me how much imagination has vanished from children these days.

Ok, so my childhood summers weren't exactly "go to the park and swim or play baseball all day because there's nothing else to do, then come home at dinner time" like my parents' summers, but I know I never brought my Gameboy to camp. I was too busy interacting with my peers and playing games like kickball or wall ball.

Ok, granted, they're not exactly isolated, they play their DS's next to each other. But still...how much socializing can occur when you're too busy staring at dual 3-inch screens?

But then again, I can't complain too much because it keeps them out of trouble. Plus I get to share stories of when portable games were in black and white, Nickelodeon was actually GOOD, there was no such thing as a DVD player, and we had to use up a phone line to hop onto the internet...oh and Youtube? Nonexistant.

I'd just think parents would be more inclined to have their kids keep their DS's at home.

I would think the daycamp would make it a rule that they aren't allowed.

Well if they set up a tournament I bet they could meet a lot of fellow campers that way

My neice & nephew constantly play with their DS's. You're right, it keeps them quiet but it also makes very anti-social. I don't expect them to be talking with all the adults since they're just kids but step away from the DS for a few minutes. Jeez!

And now for my old man moment....I can't wait to tell my kid, "I used to have to GET UP to change the channel. And we only had three channels to pick from."

My dad used to tell us, "I used to have to walk 12 miles to school each way. And it would snow or rain every day. And it was uphill, both ways."

Nah...they'd just harass us adults more.

Hey I let them do whatever they want as long as it's within the rules. If they wanna play with their DS's that's their business, it just amazes me how much they play with them.

I play my DS every day. Actually, I play every night. A few games of solitaire after I lay down in bed. Fun stuff. I don't, however, stick it in my purse and play everywhere I go.

all the camps that I'm associated with don't allow video games, music players, movie players, or cell phones... the only time they can listen to music or have cell phones out is when at the cabin... of course we're in the middle of no-where so not even that Verizon guy can get service

when I went to day camp (located next to a school and a football field, not the most remote area unfortunately) kids I knew got busted for bringing their fancy walkmans to camp. this was the summer of 1991. the internet was still 5 years away, and you were the coolest if you had a walkman with Dolby noise reduction, a nice set of 90-min. tapes and a big set of earphones.

Kids got in trouble for hitting each other with slap bracelets as well.

When I was growing up I remember making tapes from my record player. It was actually pretty fun.

I think they discourage it but in the end we just want the kids to have fun. It's daycamp, not school.

Besides, there's not much to do during beforecare or aftercare. There aren't organized activities like during the regular camp day because the kids generally want to do what they want (often times they just like to hang around me and harass me).

Kids always want to do what THEY want to do.. As a parent, I would prefer you had some organized activities or at least some guidelines.

I know...but I just follow the schedule I'm given. By this time of day the kids are so worn out from organized activities that they don't want to follow anyway.

That's just an excuse. And I'm not saying it is YOUR excuse. In other words I'm not bashing you, but to say the kids are so worn out, we may as well let them do as they want - that's an excuse. What ages are the kids?

k-3rd grade - or somewhere there abouts - heck, give them mats and give them 1 hour of quiet time. The older kids? They aren't "too tired" to follow directions, they just don't want to. They leave your place and go home and run around till bedtime anyway.

Just my opinion.

We don't have mats, and the kids would just pout if there was quiet time.

They usually work together pretty well. You have your group that plays knockout, the group that plays 4 square, the group that plays cards, the group that plays on the playground, the group that harasses me the whole time, and the group that plays with their DS's.

Okay, so then the problem wasn't as big as you made it out to be in the first place.

I never said it was a problem. I just thought it was unusual and kind of a shame. But I'm not about to yank the DS's out of their hands.

Honestly, it's not a luxury camp by any means. It's more about the people than it is the campsite itself. It's run by a small non-profit run by parents/community members so there's only so much that can be done.

I'm not sure what "luxury" has to do with it. I don't think they should allow cell phones, games, etc., period. Why do you need that kind of thing at camp?

Well, cell phones so they can call their parents. As for games, why should we care what they do when they have free play time as long as they're not doing anything dangerous or causing trouble? It's camp, not school.

It's not like they play their DS during swimming, sports, arts and crafts or any of those times. It's during free play time (beforecare and aftercare is always free play time), plus, if the parents let them have their games and phones, who are we to take them away?
