With the recent passing of the great George Carlin which do believe is the greatest comedian of all time?

Too hard to choose.

I want to go with Carlin so I can dedicate it to my hommey, but Murphy and Williams are so diverse. Pryors standups were also hillarious. The way Pryor would say one simple thing would make me laugh in his movies.

Dave Chappelle is one of my favorites of recent.

Other.

Sorry guy, a post about best comedians that doesn't include Bob Hope isn't a very good list.

Bob Hope gets my vote.

i voted pryor though... probably my favorite

Had to go with Cosby.

Having 4 kids, one of his jokes rolls through my head at least once a day. Especially when I chasing a 4 year old with a sharpie yelling come here..come here...come here.

Or, of course, feedind them chocolate cake for breakfast.

I had to vote for Eddie Murphy simply because his laugh alone makes me laugh.

Bob Hope
Howie Mandell
Sam Kinnison

I voted for Robin Williams, but the above are all easily as great.

The problem is that they are all unique and have such different styles that there really can't be just one Greatest, they all are.

And Larry the Cable guy shouldn't even come close to getting on this list... in fact, I'm going to blame his inclusion on the server issues today.... even the server knew it was bogus and refused to serve the webpages in protest.

If Larry were to perform his bits with a nice haircut, button down suit, and no haybales on the stage, in front of an audience of people with an education beyond middle school he would bomb miserably. And only THEN would I laugh.

Ron White's pretty good though.

I agree.

Some are slapstick. Some are shock. Some are subtle. Some are political, visual, etc., etc.

I still say Hope. If you listen to old Hope stuff, he was subtle, and you had to listen and think, but he was funny as heck.

i have no problem with larry the cable guy, i think he's pretty funny

i don't know if you guys know it, but he's actually not like that, which i think makes it funnier, he used to be a frequent caller in on a dc talk show...

but my problem is, you can't stick this guy in with guys like richard pryor and robin williams...

Well if Pryor, Murphy, or Cosby were in front of a KKK audience I think they would fall short of laughs as well

BTW I voted for Pryor

Don Rickles should have a spot on that list.

I chose George Carlin. He was and still is my comedy hero. I also liked Sam Kinison a lot. Another great one is Kip Addotta.

So people with only a Middle School education should check with you for a approved Comedian? Everybody should like who they like. Myself, I don't get Jerry Seinfelt, but I'm not going to question the level of intelligence of those who do.

Ditto Steve Martin & Carol Burnett.

To go back to the Larry bashing, I would seriously put Bobcat Goldtwait on that list looong before I would put Larry on it.

Another one that should get honorable mention is Billy Crystal.... and Chris Rock, and Lenny Bruce... and Buddy Hackett... and Red Skelton .... and Redd Foxx .... and Jack Benny .... and no list would be complete without, of course, Andy Kauffman.

I always liked Pee Wee Herman when he did his standup stuff on the old HBO or Showtime Specials in the early 80's.

But I like Larry the CG...he has his schtick...works for him.

Oh geez - don't let phil hear that you laugh at Larry the Cable Guy - he'll call you ignorant and stupid.

By the way, according to phil, I'm ignorant and stupid as well.

Not one of the best of all time, but Bob Saget is hilarious! I think it's that his stand up is SO completely different that his public persona.

I went with Pryor just beacause he is such a pioneer for guy like Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy, BUT how can you not put Redd Foxx, or Don RIckles, and more modern Dave Chapelle. Putting Larry The Cable guy on that list is a joke, and I dont even dislike him or anything, but there is no way he deserves to be mentioned with guys like Carlin,Pryor, or Cosby. Hell he was the 4th best comedian on the Blue Collar Tour.

How about Dennis Miller and Steven Wright .. two of my favorites.

I also think Ron White is hilarious.

Funny thing, I'm not a big fan of Larry the Cable Guy, but I thought that youtube clip a few posts up was funny as hell ... much more funny than his Cable Guy stuff.

You're right. Red Skelton and Redd Fox should both be on the list.

One of the funniest Red Skelton lines:

Red: We went out with two broads last night, Lassie and Hortense.

Other guy: I thought Lassie was a dog?

Red: You should've seen Hortense.

Oh yeah, Lisa Lampanelli is hilarious! She does a lot of those "Celebrity X is getting roasted" shows lately. I started hearing on Sirius Raw Dog Comedy about 3 years ago. Funny, funny gal.

Peen and some others are right,, how do you leave Bob Hope, Jerry Sienfield, Johnny Carson, Joey Bishop, Bob Newhart and Mr. Warmth himself, Don Rickles,, not to mention Shecky Green of the list of the Greatest comidians of all time. Let's not forget Joan Rivers and many other female that were nuts as well.

But strickly going by those you gave me a choice of, on that list, Carlin would get my vote. Only because his humor wasn't just funny, it was often insightful and caused you to stop and think. Oh hell, the guy was just flat out funny

GM< I have also been called ignorant and stoopid as well. Now I feel like I am part of something bigger.
Never took it as an insult ever though, probably because I AM, well, you know. No, I just took it as a friendly reminder because I well, am ignorant and stoopid. Sokay.
PS I loved Carlin, but a whole lot of faves there on the list.

There are alot of other greats George Burns, Jack Benny, Abbott and Costello, and the Marx Brothers. These are classics.
