Jurevicius had swelling and discomfort in his knee related to his first operation, and the club said in a statement Tuesday that he had a further "clean out" on Monday at the Cleveland Clinic to "help his recovery and control his symptoms." The team said no determination has been made on Jurevicius' status for training camp, which opens July 23.
The 33-year-old had 50 catches for 614 yards and three touchdowns last season.
Following his first surgery, Jurevicius contracted a staph infection, the sixth Browns player in four years to get staph.
Jurevicius has two years remaining on a four-year contract he signed in 2006. The 10-year veteran, who has also played for the New York Giants, Tampa Bay and Seattle, returned to Cleveland to play for the team he grew up idolizing. He attended Lake Catholic High School in Mentor, Ohio.

The guy is 33-34 years old, going to retire anyway after the season....now he has another operation.
I don't dislike the guy at all, but the fact he went to a Cleveland HS doesn't do much for me.
At some point there is going to be a numbers crunch, and Joe may be one of the guys crunched.

I like the desire and professionalism JJ brought to the Browns.
He always puts the team first.
On another note does Rucker have the speed to play in the slot?
That could make for some matchup problems.
I couldn't imagine he wouldn't have as much speed as JJ.
Hope JJ can make it back, but we will have to wait and see what happens.
Probably will be on the PUP list.

The thing that JJ added to the slot and 3rd down WR position was his great hands. Also, he didn't "Northcutt" and go on a 4 yard route on 3rd and 6.
I really hope JJ can play this year. He's not the fastest guy, but he gives 100% and is truly a very good WR. He was a great 3rd down WR.

Joe knows the field very well... His awareness is amazing... He knows where defenders are, and makes big plays because of it. And I really like the fact that EVERY time he gets a first down... he points forward... lol...

The ONLY was Joe doesn't make the roster is if he's injured.
I hope you don't mean to insinuate that Wilson, or newly drafted Hubbard, could bump him off the roster by talent.
If he's injured or decides to retire because he can't play this season then so be it. But neither Wilson nor Hubbard will have anything to do with it.

Agreed... I think if he can play, he will play. If he retires it means he thinks he can't play but if he thinks he can go, even if he sits out all or most of camp, he'll be on the roster and on the field. He's too valuable, too experienced and too good to let go unless he can't or doesn't want play anymore, and has as close to a guaranteed spot on the roster as anyone can expect. This clean up may be just that and they are catching it now instead of waiting until later, it's not like he needs the camp time. We've seen this before, starters rehab "clean-up" procedures while 2nd tier players get reps, it works well for everyone. JMHO Get well soon, Joe!

This is beyond ridiculous. It might only be a matter of time when free agents refuse to come and play for the Browns because of this ridiculous occurence of staph infections.

I think if you read other teams sites you will be surprised by the amount of staph infections that are going around. My sister is an Rn an has told me they are becoming increasingly rampant all over the place.

OK, let's crunch some numbers. There are 5 WR slots on the squad. Usually four suit on game day and one is inactive:
1) Edwards
2) Stallworth
3) Cribbs
4) ?
5) ?
Here are the candidates:
1) J.J.
2) Wilson
3) Steptoe
4) Kasper
5) Hill
6) Hubbard
7) Leggett
8) Sanders
9) Mr. X, which could be Parker or a vet player cut during TC
Steptoe, Hill,Hubbard,Sanders and Leggett *might* be eligible for the one WR slot on the practice squad.So at least 5 of the above will be without a job,at least with the Browns,after TC.

I only spoke up about it after RAC scolded the media and JJ stood up and said the reports weren't true..
By the way, you never once heard me say or saw me write that the Media is always wrong.... What i've said over and over again is that they sensationalize everything. That they blow everything out of proportion..

1) J.J. Will be on the field. No question about it, unless injuries take a toll on his body.
2) Wilson Is expected to step it up. Is expected to get onto the field. Is expected to prove to Savage and Rac that he was worth being drafted. He is the one everyone is considered to fill in as a backup. Only he can mess that up.
3) Steptoe The addition of Stallworth KILLED any opportunity he had to make the team. He will probably spend another year on PS.
4) Kasper Cut
5) Hill Cut
6) Hubbard Deep at WR, so he will go to PS.
7) Leggett Cut
8) Sanders I expect Sanders to show up in preseason, and make some nice plays. He and Brady Quinn will look good together for sure.
9) Mr. X, which could be Parker or a vet player cut during TC Therer will be NO Mr. X. If they invest in another WR, it would be stupid. We should only be investing in corners at this point.

I really like Joe and what he brings to the field, BUT - This is almost certainly his last year, and last season was his first he played all 16 games. We have several young players who may be able to contribute, and who would benefit from the extra PT.
While none of them may be as good as Joe THIS year, somebody will have to replace him next year. Could Hubbard, Sanders, Steptoe, Wilson, or someone else be that guy, with some extra experience?
I guess I'm thinking we could lose next year's guy, or slow his development, by keeping JJ active. With Edwards and Stallworth, should we PUP Joe while playing Wilson, or someone else, while keeping Joe in reserve in case of injury?

Maybe since I don't follow other teams nearly as much as I do the Browns, I am not aware of staph infections which are affecting players elsewhere. But it just seems as if it's affecting the Browns more than it is any other Cleveland Team.
I just feel that if continues at the level it is occuring now, then it could have a negative impact on future Free Agent signings. JMO.

Staph is not just a problem in sports. It's bad all over the country. Now will you notice it more in Football compared to baseball or basketball. Sure you will. Number one there are more players on the roster, and number two there are way more surguries proformed on football players vs baseball, and basketball players.

What part of "it's happening a lot around league" did you not understand...
If this were isolated to the Browns, I'd agree with you to a point (players almost always follow the money no matter what).
But it's a league wide issue... so it's not gonna mean a thing. NOTHING

j/c I want everyone to go to www.google.com and type in NFL Staph Infection. Guess how many times the Browns come up as a hit on the first page of results? 8 out of the 10. Can someone else please provide instances where other teams are reporting staph infections to the magnitude of Cleveland?

I know you can't cut a injured player. many people replied to me so I will just make my comments here.
I do think some of the young guys talent could be a deciding factor.
I don't think I am the only person who is at least a bit wary of a aging, slowish, receiver who is just off another operation.
If he is hurt, it will play out as such and he will retire or take a settlement.
If he isn't hurt, I think the word is filtering back to Joe he is going to have a hard time making the squad and it might be time to hang them up.
We will see how it all works out, but I really don't expect Joe J to be a member of the roster when the opener arrives.
I like the guy, but you don't build rosters based on who you like.
Joe would take a roster slot from someone for one final hurrah...great if it happened....I just don't think it will. He is either going to be hurt and can't play anymore, or he will be convinced by the team retirement after a long career is the better way to go out.
But hey...maybe I am wrong and he ends up catching 15 tds this year.

Well, seven of those eight articles are about the same infection with JJ. multiple media and web outlets recent postings of the same story skew that stat. Read this one too: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4188/is_20061126/ai_n16875527 In 2006 the Redskins had five guys at once with staph infections. I don't know if they've had any since the article was written, but if you do some reading of this and other articles, you'll see it's a widespread problem.

I did what you said, went to google, typed in Staph Infection and out of the first two pages with about 10 examples per page, I found only the Browns.....ONCE and that was for JJ.

JJ has had a real tough time with what had first been reported as pretty simple surgery.
I also will not be surprised if he ends up retiring 8 months sooner than what was to be expected. Its a shame if he does cause he has been part of the transormation and a good leader.

Look at it a little closer, it was JJ, Lecharles Bentley, and Brian Russell. Not really the point though. My point was that I don't see any other instances popping up.

Probably why Parker rumors have been making the rounds.
That said...if Joe doesn't return, and we don't sign anybody, it isn't the end of the world.
Winslow brings a option most teams don't have.
We could quit calling him a TE, line him up outside and still be better off at that position than most teams, and Heiden gives us a good enough TE....at least top of the bottom 1/3, if not better.
It isn't like Heiden would kill us if we had to play him 85% of the time.
