Favre has communicated his potential desire to coach Mike McCarthy but talks have not advanced to a substantive stage, a Packers source said. The source said the Packers would be reluctant to open the door for Favre because "Brett retired for the right reasons, even though I know his family is tugging on him [to play]." Another source conceded Favre was "getting the itch" to play football in 2008. However, Favre's agent downplayed the likelihood that the quarterback could un-retire or that he was prepared to report to camp July 28. "As far as I know, right now, Brett Favre is retired and until he tells me something different, that's what it is," James "Bus" Cook, Favre's agent, said. Favre was unavailable for comment. A Packers spokesman said that McCarthy and general manager Ted Thompson were on vacation. Favre has two years remaining on his contract at an average of about $12.5 million per season. His salary is not currently counting toward the salary cap because the Packers placed him on the reserve-retired list. If Favre decides that he absolutely wants to play this season, the Packers could be confronted with a sensitive issue. The entire offseason has been spent preparing Aaron Rodgers to play quarterback to the point where "the offensive scheme has evolved" and, psychologically, closing the door on Favre's legendary 17-year career. If the Packers resist a stronger push by Favre to return, sources speculate that the quarterback could press the team to release him from his contract so that he could seek a job with another team. A league official said that Favre could force a decision by asking the Packers, in writing, to reinstate him to active status. The team would have to comply or release him. "That's speculation and I wouldn't go there," a team source said. "We value Brett's legacy, we think he values it, and we'd want to protect that. Brett's a high-quality person and he's not going to push it that far. He'll do the right thing [and stay retired]. This was almost predictable, the idea that Brett would get the itch to play as we get closer to the season." In an interview done with ESPN around the time Favre retired in early March, McCarthy predicted Favre "will have an itch to come back. I saw Joe Montana go through it, even though I was a younger coach in Kansas City at the time." McCarthy said it was Favre who convinced the coach that retirement was the "right thing to do." "I tried to talk him out of retirement," McCarthy said back in March. "Tom Clements [Green Bay's quarterbacks coach] and I were trying to sell him on the concept that he could still play at a high level with 80-to-85 percent of the commitment he had last year. Brett thought that maybe he could do it but he reasoned that when you cut back the commitment, you open yourself up to injury, to not being on top of your game -- which was very important to Brett -- and letting the team down in the process. "Really, what Brett did was very honorable because the stress and pressure he feels is a direct result of the standard he sets for himself." Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.

It's just that time of year again, there have been numerous reports of people who have just retired and then started to want to come back again because its training camp. After the preseason stuff his desire to play will die down.

It doesn't surprise me he wants to play again but what family members are pushing him to play? I'd think his immediate family is happy he's home with them.... is it some distant cousin that wants some $$

I hope someone talks some sense to him. Give it up, Brett. You retired, of your own free will.
The only reason for him to come back is so he can get more glory. How much glory is involved with a permanent injury? How much glory is involved with dropping your "legacy" down to "I wanted glory and money, I had it, but I wanted more."
Mark martin comes to mind, for nascar fans.

hahaha - didn't think of that.
I can't imagine GB taking him back... they drafted a QB this year and have tweaked the office to fit Rodgers... I know he's a legend... but at some point you have to move on and from everything I've read GB has done that.

All of this started by Favre's agent, Bus Cook. He wants Brett back in the game and is trying to drum up interest. He was the one behind the whole "Randy Moss to the Packers thing," from last year.

The Packers really are in a no-win here if Brett wants to come back. Brett's clearly was not in the team's plans with Rodgers and the drafting of Brian Brohm, but if GB doesn't take him back, they'll be roasted by their fans. Tough spot.

Nah, it's not a tough spot for the pack.
IF favre wants to come back, they wish him all the best, remind everyone that he said he was done with football, remind everyone that with that thought in mind they had moved on and he doesn't fit their plans right now. In a worst case scenario, favre goes somewhere else, wins a couple games, and shows how old he is. End of story.
The pack simply says "we made our decisions based on what brett's decision was last year. If he wants to change his mind, fine."
At some point these athletes need to learn that the game is NOT about them. The game is bigger than them. Retire already, for the second time. Or, become a joke, like mark martin in nascar.

Favre is a HOF QB , however I just can't see the Packers just handing the ball to back to Favre....They have moved on and IMHO so should he....Although IF he was to surface with another team that wouldn't bother me  ....

j/c If we wants back in football he might want to consider announcing of coaching in some aspect being qb.coach how ever i dont think he'd be a good qb coach. Or a corrdinator.

Actually , I think your idea is a sound one....Favre has all the tool to be a Qb Coach and eventually become a good one....That next stage of his football life might very well start off slow , as did his playing career....However , Favre is a Winner and IMHO would eventually be one as QB coach as well....

Farve Can play but he can't teach or worse he's selfish. There have been several articles since Rodgers was in GB that Farve never taught him or helped him at all since he was drafted.

Sorry, but as soon as Aaron Rodgers throws his first INT at home, the fans will be all on him wishing they had re-signed Favre. Rodgers (and probably Brohm) will be ruined and the Packers will have wasted two high draft picks.

After he says he's retired for 2 years? 4 Years? When do they believe the guy? Maybe in 5 years they should believe he's not coming back? When should they take him at his word? When he gives it? Ooops, he's already done that.

I feel bad for Rodgers. In that draft (2005?) I thought he was the top QB and still do. He has a very strong arm, has decent mobility and has pretty good accuracy. On the down side he's not prototype size and his leadership ability has been questioned. He's got a humungous ego and is from the Jeff Tedford tree that has had pretty spotty NFL success.
I think if he gets a chance....without Favre....he's got a decent chance to be good. I'm sure he'll surprise people the first time they see him as he has a rocket launcher not far off of Favre's arm.
Funny....so far the top QB from that draft from a performance perspective is our QB.

I agree with you. Brett is selfish and a me player. Look every year am i going to retire or not. Waiting until last minute to decide. The comments in the media about Javon Walker's holdout over his contract. I heard the same thing about not helping Rodgers. And besides he's a gunslinger I can't see how he can be able to teach young qb's anything.

Ohh no kidding? I don't read a ton about other teams and honestly never heard that about Favre,,interesting.
I know Brett is a competitor and loves playing the game, but after hanging em up and the team moving on to the future you can't simply bend over and take it just b/c it's Brett Favre. If they did give in and do that they will destroy Rogers. The guy was drafted as his replacement and put in his time behind what everyone characterized as a selfish veteran. You finally have that guy out of the picture and the franchise planning around your strengths and all of the sudden your 2nd best again. That would prob really mess with him.
If Brett wants to come back then fine, but hopefully it will be with a different team. Who cares what the fans think b/c bottom line should always be whats best for the team.

That was then this is now...Once Favre retires and he still feels that desire to be involved , that attitude IF valid will fade....Over time Favre could become a decent QB Coach JMHO ....

That was true in Rodgers' first year but since that time Favre has been tutoring him...here is a blurb from one article out of many that states this is so:

I'm sure every retired veteran had the "ITCH" to play especially when that time of year starts coming around.
Heck I wasn't even a pro and got that baseball itch every spring for quite some time...I guess till I couldn't run anymore...lol 
Just cause somebody overheard Favre stating that he has the itch...means squat. I think the media is spreading this as news and fact in an irresponsible manor.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Brett Favre dismissed an ESPN report that he's considering coming out of retirement as "all rumor."
Favre responded Wednesday to the ESPN report by telling his hometown newspaper Web site, SunHerald.com in Gulfport, Miss., that "it's all rumor."
The paper reported that Favre sent a text message saying there's "no reason" for a media frenzy.
ESPN reported that an unidentified Packers source said the 38-year-old Favre told coach Mike McCarthy in the past two weeks that he has the itch to play.
"The Packers have no reaction," team spokesman Jeff Blumb told The Associated Press.
Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, didn't return a message seeking comment. Packers general manager Ted Thompson and McCarthy were on vacation.
Favre retired March 6 after a 17-year career.
Cornerback Al Harris said on ESPN's "NFL Live" that Favre made similar comments to him.
"I know he has the itch to come back and play," Harris said. "If he will or not, I don't know."
The Packers plan to use Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season, and he's been leading the team through organized team activities and minicamp.
Rodgers has been groomed to take over for Favre since being selected in the first round in 2005, but has played sparingly.
"Aaron is our quarterback," Harris said. "Brett's retired. But if he wanted to come back, there would be some guys who wouldn't mind it. I would welcome him back with open arms."
Favre has two years left on his contract at an average of about $12.5 million per season. The Packers placed him on the reserve-retired list in the spring so his salary does not now count toward the cap.
Favre's commitment to retirement has been questioned since his announcement. That talk resumed in mid-June when Favre withdrew from the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe, scheduled for July 11-13.
Tournament spokesman Steve Griffith said then that Favre had to miss the event because of a scheduling conflict.
When he retired, a teary Favre said, "I've given everything I possibly could give to this organization, the game of football, and I don't think I've got anything left to give And that's it. I know I can play. But I don't think I want to."
But less than two months later, he told reporters he might be open to returning if Rodgers was injured.
Favre, a three-time MVP, leads the league with 442 touchdown passes, 61,655 yards passing and 160 career victories. He started 253 consecutive regular-season games, more than any other quarterback in history. Including the playoffs, his streak stands at 275.
Rodgers, meanwhile, has stirred up controversy himself this week. In a Sports Illustrated article, the quarterback said he didn't feel pressure to connect with fans the way Favre did.

Jeez kid... I understand you've got to be getting REAL tired of the "Annual Favre Drama," but I don't think it is wise to diss some of the best fans in the game like that when you've accomplished a hair less than NOTHING in this league to date. Respect is earned, not automatic and you're starting off behind because you're following a legend. Me thinks it is YOU that needs to just shut and play. Do well, and the fans will embrace you.

My point is that you don't want to be the QB following "The Man". Miami has never recovered post-Marino. If the ghost of Favre is still hovering around Green Bay, this season and the next few seasons will be shot.
I do agree that the Packers need to just move on, but I can't believe their fans will let them due to the history of Brett in Green Bay.

Continued Success is what moves you past an era.
If he fails, and the subesequent QB fails, it will be compared to Miami and Marino... it'll be 'The Favre Hangover'.
However, if there is continued success, it will be closer to Montana -> Young -> Garcia.
The fans don't determine jack-sqaut, they/we simply react to what happens on the bottom line of the W-L ledger.

Not saying you're not right or that you didn't read that somewhere, but all remember is Favre saying "I'ts no my job to teach him". very early on when Rogers was drafted. Since then I haven't heard anything of the sort.
Not saying it's not out there somewhere but until I see a link to the several articles I'll assume that to be a made up exaggeration based on one snippet a long time ago. It's awful hard to believe that the veteran QB would not teach or help at all in the time Rogers has been there.

I like Brett & all, but is anyone surprised that rumor soaked story would be coming out of ESPN about this time of year? Some might suspect this writer especially. But really, despite innuendo, I do not expect it or want it. In a variation, "We gotta (for)get this guy." But if he DOES play, he might be welcome in Cleveland, where we have been known to carry as many as 7 or 8 QB's at one time. Enjoy retirement Big F! See ya in the booth!

I don't get why people freak out on whether or not someone wants to play...
If he comes back, good for him... If he stays in retirement, once again good for him.
People make too big of a deal out of this stuff, I doubt Favre is sitting at home going "Wow, here's what ill do, I'll say I want to retire, then a few months down the road, I'll announce I want to come back just so everyone can be so shocked!"
