With gas prices around 4 dollars a gallon, those summer getaways to Mytle Beach and Panama City could be put on the shelf for the time being.
For a alternative I suggest a great getaway known as Toronto,Canada.
If you want a city thats diverse in every sense of the word,Toronto has it.
49% of the city inhabitants are not from Toronto. They come from China,Japan, India, Greece,Italy, etc.
The food selections are endless in Toronto. Middle Eastern, Chinese, Thai, Greek are in abundance.Tons of steakhouse, all in a row.
If you mention Toronto, you can't do it without the city's breath taking buildings and skyline.
They are very European in influence, especially British. I think Toronto has the 2nd most buildings over 300 FT in height in North America.
If you visit Toronto, you can't miss the CN Tower..its tallest freestanding structure in the world.
Shopping wise there is no equal to the Eaton Centre. 300 stories spaced over a couple blocks. They have alot of stores you don't see in the states.
You don't need a car to get around in Toronto..like any other metropolis, theres the subway system, trains or you can walk.
The lakefront is a treasure. It looks endless.
and if you go,don't forget to eat at Tim Hortons Doughnuts...hate to say,its better than Dunkin Donuts....
plus the street trucks that serve sausages and fries and hot dogs sliced 4 times are very affordable....
if you go visit Toronto, exchange your money at the banks..the hotel rates are bad.
If anyone has been to Toronto,discuss......I've been there 6 times.

Love Toronto, although the last time I was there was back in '98. I went to see Paul Stanley (KISS) play the Phantom of the Opera with a buddy of mine.

I love Toronto.

The only negative I could imagine is how is the exchange on money these days?

It isn't so great if you are only getting 80 cents on the dollar.

Just looked.....we still hold a edge.....you will get a 2% value on your money.

Toronto is an awesome city to visit. Plenty of things to do on the water,I enjoyed Harbourfront a lot when I was there. A good place to eat is in the St. Lawrence Market which has lots of different vendors of ethnic foods. Eaton Center and and Queen Street West is a huge place for shopping. There are a few cool small islands called Tororto Island Park which is neat. I recommend it for anybody looking to get away for 2-3 days

Always exchange at the bank and never the hotel. At the bank for every $100.00 I exchanged I got back roughly $99.00 and change.
Big props to the street vendors with the cheap food(Yukon Gold potatoes for the french fries)

I was in Toronto in 1997. I was in Ottawa and Montréal in 2006. I liked both Toronto (especially shopping on Yonge Street). I really enjoyed Ottawa, but could have mostly done away with Montréal. The people were friendly in both Toronto and Ottawa, but around Montréal, they were more unfriendly.

At the Canadian parliament, the poor tour guide was taking a severe ribbing from me. I asked him what happens if the queen decides to dissolve the Canadian government. He simply said, the Canadian government would cease to exist as such and all government functions would then come under control of the British. I laughed.
