so i just get back from a week vacation and my employers call me into the office, they tell me that my current availability needs to be extended to a few hours longer because another employee had to change his. i already have another job and take classes as well. i say i cant and they say its not negotiable. i was stressed as it is, and considering they cut my raise by more than half, ihad enough.
i quit
afterwards it was like a huge burden had been lifted off my shoulders. like i was free. im not unemployed and money may be tight, but now i actually have more time ican put towards my education. the feeling may not last, and only time will tell if my funds can sustain, but it almost feels like a good thing at the moment
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

Sometimes you have to take that first big step for better opportunities to present themselves.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Wow, man. Was the paycheck a burden???
I wouldn't have recommended this move, but what's done is done. In my opinion, from too much experience, hunting for a new job ,my most hated of tasks w/ moving being a closed second, is WAY easier and MUCH less stressful when you aren't already unemployed.
I wish you GOOD LUCK!!!!

That takes courage to walk away from a job. Like it or not, in todays economy, it's a rather unwise decision generally speaking.
But, hey, if you feel good about it and your prospects, then more power to you and you have my best wishes.

I wouldn't post that here. I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago; I was overworked, underpaid and miserable. I posted something similar to what you did and got flamed for being "lazy" and not "understanding the real world." Anyway, good luck to you. You'll be much happier with your life (which is the most important thing), and you'll probably find a better job.

He said he wasn't unemployed. He was working 2 jobs and going to classes. He quit one job. Not both.
As for leaving, if you weren't getting consideration from the employer, or at least some understanding that this would be a temp situation and were not happy, then more power to ya bud. Hope it all works out for ya. Sometimes the best things come out of the worst situations.

Good luck to you! I quit my job a year ago and the night before my last day I couldn't stop crying! I worked there seven years and those people were like my family. Yet at the same time, I felt so free and happy because I wasn't treated right by the boss either. Again, good luck! If you start missing the paycheck or anything like that, just remember why you left in the first place. There are some things more important than money. For me the change was a long time coming and very difficult to make the step from "more than enough money" to "who knows what may happen". But the place changed me in a bad way. I was taken advatage of, stressed, put down for being a woman, under estimated, harrassed, and forced to do things against the law... ot name a few things. If you feel good about your decision, don't let anyone make you feel differently, they don't know the whole story.

If you can survive without the paycheck, even if only temporary, I say you made a right move. Unless you like stop paying child support or something like that, which would be a bad move

Congrats!
I went through a similar situation.
I had taken a job and had informed them that I would be attending college in the fall. When I my employer at the time that I would need to have my hours changed, they said flatly, "No!". I told the HR office that they knew that I had planned to attend college in the fall and that my hours would need to be adjusted. Their retort was, "We can't do that." I then said, "If you cannot change my hours then I quit." I left their office and never returned.
I had taken a job in a warehouse with little ventilation. The average temperature in the warehouse was around 110-120° F and our shifts were often 10-11 hours long. My supervisor said, "Good luck finding a well-paying job." I make a very nice salary today. If he isn't dead, he's still toiling away in that warehouse for about $10/hr. I don't believe he achieved anything more than an 8th grade education.
Furthering your education should always be #1. The more education you have, the more opportunities you have. If you don't work for yourself, you will be more free to choose your employer than your co-workers.

Keep one thing in mind....when the majority of workers or consumers consider it a bad time to change jobs because of a sluggish economy...your opportunities get better all the time.
When most people do not want to rock the boat for fear that they will make an error and have to be chastised for it...you have the chance to be noticed and remembered as having the guts to succeed.

Congrats! I had a similar situation, but I didn't walk away as you did, I was fired due to new ownership. Spent 2 months pouting at home, then realized pouting wasn't paying bills. Got a job I hated. Worked there 3 months before quitting because of a business I was able to buy. Self employed now, 5 years running, and it didn't take me long to realize, after starting this, that getting fired was a blessing for me.
I wish you the best.

My last job was heaping on "performance based punishment" (having other's work given to you as you prove you can do your own and still go home on time. The more you do, the more they give you until they find the straw that breaks your back)to my already busy days. Then they told me I had a bad attitude when I stood up for myself and my coworkers that were pulling their weight. I quit. I did give a two week notice and worked it out but I turned in that notice with nothing else in the wings. Enough was enough and I wasn't going to let a job crush my will. A week after my last day I turned in one resume and was working again. This time at a job I love. A company that respects me and treats me like a human being. One with a life outside of work that is just as important to me if not more. Sometimes ones load in life has to be readjusted. Sometimes you just have to put crap down. Good for you. Life is too short to let some jerk company screw you around. I'm sure you'll be fine.
on a side note... I've been in the workforce for over 20 years. I've left most jobs under good standing. Though there have been a few I just couldn't take anymore and walked on them. ... I punched out at lunch at one warehouse type job and never returned. I could only handle turning off my brain and plugging away at that tedious, repetitious job for a couple of months. ... As a cook I got in an arguement with my manager and walked on him in the middle of lunch rush. He thought he knew how to run the kitchen better than me, so I let him. He'd never been behind the line in a real setting (rush) before, I'm sure he flailed badly. His jaw about hit the floor when I took off my apron and walked out. ... I bussed tables at another restaurant. They insisted I washed dishes one night when the dishwasher didn't show. I refused and told them to make the girl with less seniority do it instead. They told me they didn't make women work in the kitchen. I laughed and told them they would that night. Upon refusing to change that policy they worked short a dishwasher and a busser that night. I never returned. I'm a damn good employee. If treated right I'll give you my all. The way I see it anymore really good employees are hard to come by. God knows I've worked with a bunch of trained apes in the past. With that, my phylosophy is you need me more than I need you. The day you start treating me otherwise is the day I walk. It helps being a nurse and not having kids. Jobs are more than plentiful and I only have to feed myself.

You know I got fired from one of my jobs at a previous employer. They called it and "economic slowdown" that forced their hand.
Truth was, I confronted the owner directly after his own bank refused to cash his paycheck to me and he didn't like it one bit.
On two previous occasions, paychecks from him had bounced. After the third time, when his bank refused to cash his check and I confronted him about it, saying to him that if this continued, he would have to pay me in cash at the end of every day.
I was dismissed within two weeks. Of course, on my last day, I had been allowed to work to the end of the day.

I use a simple philosophy when it comes to work.. Is the pay worth, the headache. I quit one job because they were screwing with the time I wanted to take my vacation and time I requested off.. I requested a vacation which they said would be fine.. then changed it saying that I couldn't take it and had to reschedule. Then another time, I asked for a weekend off and said I could take it.. and once again changed their mind. And I'm normally not one to really take much time off. It seems a bit petty, but if I want time off, ask for it and say I could take it.. I am going to be upset because I was looking forward to the plans I had for those days off. But it actually worked out for me, because after that I took a job.. didn't pay me well enough there, but after that Job I was able to get a job that now pays me 3x more than what I used to be getting.. which if i didn't live where I do, I'd be well-off

I've walked away from several jobs that held unhealthy environments for me since I first started working full time and never have I ended up regretting it. When one door closes another always opens. Put it behind you and move on. Good luck.

It sounds like the job was part-time...if you had a burden relived, then good....and if it was a part-time job, you shouldn't have to hard a time finding something that will replace a portion, if not all of the income if you find you really need it.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Congrats! Perhaps they'll reconsider and will be calling you in another day or two. But if not, then you can figure you didn't have much security there anyway. Best of luck to you, may your action today provide the opportunity to someday say it help you create your own luck.

The best part is their hardline stance now makes them have to pour 2 people's work onto the rest of the workers now...
Kinda like when modell told Jim Brown he had to come back from that movie for training camp or else.... then he decided to stay at the movie... and modell was left looking like a doofus (again)

Sounds as if you had a plan....good you went for it! It is way too tough to hang at a job you really are not happy with. Often times, it takes only one person to make your job miserable....I dealt with that for awhile...luckily that person went away. I am hoping the best for you!

Maybe not. They can just tell the original worker, sorry bucko but you have to work extended hours now. The worker that caused the mess in the first place may actually (if he's halfway competent) be put into a better position.

Congrats! I'll be making a similar move as I switch my schooling from part-time at night to full time during the day. I'm quite unhappy with my present work situation and after nearly a year of it being like this, I'm finally taking the steps to make myself happy.
Good luck!

Sounds like this job wasn't worth it. First place I'd look is your other job, see if they can expand your hours there.
